Plant size and spatial pattern in a natural population of Myosotis micrantha

This dataset was created for examining the spatial distribution of plant size in a natural plant population, and for understanding the processes which govern the same. A winter annual species, Myosotis stricta (formally known as Myosotis micrantha), was chosen for this purpose. Data collection was carried on the campus of Stony Brook University (Stony Brook, NY, USA) in May 1988, along a 700 cm x 20 cm transect. It was found that a size hierarchy existed in this plant population. Plants lacking immediate conspecific neighbors were larger than plants with one or more near neighbours, suggesting that competition from near neighbours depressed plant size. However, there was a strong positive spatial autocorrelation in plant size: large plants were associated with large neighbours and small ones with small neighbors. Plant size was also positively correlated with the combined biomass of near neighbors. Thus, the population formed a two-phase mosaic of patches of relatively large plants alternating with patches of smaller plants. These results were published in the paper titled Plant size and spatial pattern in a natural population of Myosotis micrantha (Wilson and Gurevitch, 1995).

Long Term Research in Environmental Biology: Demographic census data for thirty natural populations of American Ginseng: 1998-2016

In 1998, formal demographic censusing of wild ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) populations was initiated in West Virginia. By 2004, thirty populations had been added to the census effort, spanning seven states (IN-2, KY-6, MD-1, NY-2, PA-2, VA-5, WV-12) and a wide variety of land use histories and eastern deciduous forest communities. The censusing effort continued without interruption at all populations until June, 2016. Annually, each population was visited twice. The first visit generally occurred between late May and the end of June. The second visit generally occurred in the first three weeks of August. The purpose of the spring census was to assess the population status at the time of year when the largest number of individuals were visible aboveground (post-germination, prior to substantial losses due to browsing and other causes). Detailed measures of plant size were made, with an emphasis on total leaf area calculation. In addition, a variety of plant condition notations were made, with the ultimate goal of determining mortality and recruitment in the population, as well as individual size transitions. The primary purpose of the second census each year was to assess seed production on each plant. In addition, further notations of plant condition were made to assess changes over the growing season. To maintain methodological consistency with field personnel turnover, the lead author participated in fieldwork throughout the study, visiting each population at least once every two years. In addition, after being trained themselves, graduate students trained undergraduate conservation interns to assure consistent methods were used each year. The data are suitable for demographic modeling, and the unique spatial and temporal extent allow the exploration of important questions about variability in population growth and viability of ginseng, America’s premiere wild harvested medicinal plant.

Population assessment and foraging ecology of the rare solitary bee Anthophora retusa at Seaford Head Nature reserve

<p><em>Anthophora retusa</em> is a rare solitary bee which has declined throughout Britain and other European countries since the 1990s. It is thought to be restricted to five sites in Britain. However, information on these remaining populations is limited. Knowledge on population size, dispersal distance, habitat and forage requirements are important for successful conservation of species. The population of <em>A. retusa</em> at the Seaford Head Nature reserve in East Sussex was surveyed. Using mark recapture the population was estimated in 2018 and 2019 to be fewer than 200 individuals, with the male population increasing from 47 in 2018 to 167 in 2019. The female population was 44 in 2018 but due to zero recaptures in 2019, no population estimate was possible. Bees seem to be geographically restricted to a 25ha area within the reserve. The most visited flower species by females was <em>Glechoma hederacea </em>(66% of visits) but flower preference changed throughout the flight season, shifting to Fabaceae species and <em>Iris foetidissima</em> with 16 plant groups identified in pollen samples. Although the exact location of nesting sites was not determined with certainty it&rsquo;s thought they are nesting in the loess deposits at the top of the inaccessible sea cliff face. The average distance between recaptures was 122m, perhaps indicating low dispersal. This project suggests the presence of appropriate nesting sites, potentially soft exposed soil, may be limiting <em>A. retusa</em> distribution as they appear to forage on common plant species. More research is needed on the exact nesting requirements of the species.</p>
