<p>This data set combines epidemiological, genetics, and government stringency data of COVID-19 pandemics, all from open data sources. The sources are: Our World in Data, Worldometer, GISAID-Nextstrain, and the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker (OxCGRT). The cut off date of the first version is at the end of June 2020.&nbsp;</p> <p>The simple data set is provided as an Excel workbook, where the first, &quot;readme&quot; worksheet describes the details of data of all the worksheets in the data set.&nbsp;</p> <p>This is a working data set, expected to be refreshed over time.&nbsp;</p> <p>Raw data are not cleaned - this collection is a tool to check various hypotheses regarding possible relations among the various data types. Measures of Freight Network Resiliency During the Covid-19 Pandemic

<p>Recent headlines depict significant shifts in operations within the freight community in particular, e.g., HOS laws suspended at a national level for the first time in 82 years1; national carriers shifting operations completely to grocery supply chains2; fleet operators laying off employees in response to manufacturing closures3.&nbsp; As a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic, there is a great need to capture freight movement data (not otherwise collected) to measure the effects of the COVID-19 response and recovery practices on freight network resiliency.&nbsp; In this project, we consider an expanded definition of the freight network, beyond roads and warehouses, to include truck drivers and driver support systems.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Driver support systems include physical infrastructure like public and private rest stops as well as operational protections like Hours of Service (HOS). COVID-19 responses by public agencies and private citizens have affected drivers and driver support systems by three mechanisms. First, increased demand for medical supplies, food and packaged goods creates a need for more trucks and drivers, and the increased need for quick shipments promotes an environment in which speeding and unsafe driving practices may prevail.&nbsp; Second, with HOS restrictions lifted by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) driver fatigue may occur at greater frequency leading to unsafe driving conditions and higher likelihood of accidents.&nbsp; Third, the effects of social distancing mandates can lead to closures of critical, but oft forgotten, freight infrastructure like rest areas and truck stops, leaving drivers without necessary rest opportunities. While any single mechanism has detrimental effects on driver health and safety, the economy, and national recovery efforts, when combined, the system can be pushed to failure. Pandemic responses have only exacerbated critical industry issues like driver shortages, lack of available parking, and HOS compliance issues stemming from electronic logbooks.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The purpose of this work was to develop and implement a driver health and safety survey during the pandemic.&nbsp;</p>

The influence of the global COVID-19 pandemic on manuscript submissions and editor and reviewer performance at six ecology journals

Government policies attempting to slow the spread of COVID-19 have reduced access to research laboratories and shifted many scholars to working from home. These disruptions will likely influence submissions to scholarly journals, and affect the time available for editors and reviewers to participate in peer review. In this editorial we examine how journal submissions, and editorial and peer review processes, have been influenced by the pandemic at six journals published by the British Ecological Society (BES). We find no evidence of a change in the geographic pattern of submissions from across the globe. We also find no evidence that submission of manuscripts by women has been more affected by pandemic disruptions than have submissions by men – the proportion of papers authored by women during the COVID period of 2020 has not changed relative to the same period in 2019. Editors handled papers just as quickly, and reviewers have agreed to review just as often, during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic. The one notable change in peer review during the pandemic is that reviewers replied more quickly to emails inviting them to review (albeit only 4% sooner), and those that agreed to review returned their reviews more quickly (17% sooner), during the pandemic. We thus find no evidence at these six ecology journals that submissions and peer review processes have been negatively impacted by the pandemic. Also, contrary to analyses in other disciplines, we do not find evidence that there have been disproportionate impacts of the pandemic on female authors and reviewers.

Coping with Fibromyalgia during the COVID-19 pandemic: adjustment and wellbeing

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p><strong>Objective:</strong> Individuals with pre-existing health conditions may be experiencing particular distress under Covid-19 pandemic-related lifestyle restrictions. Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic condition where symptoms are known to be exacerbated by stress. The present study examined wellbeing, perceived symptom change and coping in individuals with and without FMS during pandemic-related social lockdown in the UK.</p> <p><strong>Design:</strong> Participants with a diagnosis of FMS (N = 390) and a general public sample with no FMS (N = 151) completed questionnaires at three time points.</p> <p><strong>Main Outcome Measures:</strong> BBC Wellbeing Scale, Cognitive-Emotional Regulation Questionnaire measure of coping, perception of extent to which symptoms have worsened or improved over time.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> Contrary to expectations, FMS participants reported improved symptoms and wellbeing over the study period. Non-FMS participants experienced worsening health symptoms and no change in wellbeing. Coping strategies involving positive reappraisal, refocussing and planning were positively associated with wellbeing in the FMS group,</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> The unpredictable symptom profile in FMS, and the regular readjustment to coping this necessitates, may support a form of resilience which has been adaptive during the pandemic. The results have implications for supporting people with FMS, and potentially other chronic conditions, especially at times of stress.</p>

Profiling of linear B-cell epitopes against human coronaviruses in pooled sera sampled early in the COVID-19 pandemic

<p>Background: Antibodies play a key role in the immune defence against infectious pathogens. Understanding the underlying process of B cell recognition is not only of fundamental interest; it supports important applications within diagnostics and therapeutics. Whereas the nature of conformational B cell epitope recognition is inherently complicated, linear B cell epitopes offer a straightforward approach that potentially can be reduced to one of peptide recognition.</p> <p>Methods: Using an overlapping peptide approach representing the entire proteomes of the seven main coronaviruses known to infect humans, we analysed sera pooled from eight PCR-confirmed COVID-19 convalescents and eight pre-pandemic controls. Using a high-density peptide microarray platform, 13-mer peptides overlapping by 11 amino acids were in situ synthesised and incubated with the pooled primary serum samples, followed by development with secondary fluorochrome-labelled anti-IgG and -IgA antibodies. Interactions were detected by fluorescence detection. Strong Ig interactions encompassing consecutive peptides were considered to represent "high-fidelity regions" (HFRs). These were mapped to the coronavirus proteomes using a 60% homology threshold for clustering.</p> <p>Results: We identified 333 human coronavirus derived HFRs. Among these, 98 (29%) mapped to SARS-CoV-2, 144 (44%) mapped to one or more of the four circulating common cold coronaviruses (CCC), and 54 (16%) cross-mapped to both SARS-CoV-2 and CCCs. The remaining 37 (11%) mapped to either SARS-CoV or MERS-CoV. Notably, the COVID-19 serum was skewed towards recognising SARS-CoV-2-mapped HFRs, whereas the pre-pandemic was skewed towards recognising CCC-mapped HFRs. In terms of absolute numbers of linear B cell epitopes, the primary targets are the ORF1ab protein (60%), the spike protein (21%), and the nucleoprotein (15%) in that order; however, in terms of epitope density, the order would be reversed.</p> <p>Conclusion: We identified linear B cell epitopes across coronaviruses, highlighting pan-, alpha-, beta-, or SARS-CoV-2-corona-specific B cell recognition patterns. These findings could be pivotal in deciphering past and current exposures to epidemic and endemic coronavirus. Moreover, our results suggest that pre-pandemic anti-CCC antibodies may cross-react against SARS-CoV-2, which could explain the highly variable outcome of COVID-19. Finally, the methodology used here offers a rapid and comprehensive approach to high-resolution linear B-cell epitope mapping, which could be vital for future studies of emerging infectious diseases.</p>

Questionnaire and interview guidelines related to Süsser et al. (2024) on how the COVID-19 pandemic changed stakeholder engagement processes in sustainability research in the long-term

<p>The survey questionnaire and the interview guidelines have been designed in the framework of the EU H2020 projects SENTINEL to study the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the stakeholder engagement processes in susatinability research in the longterm. We conducted interviews with researchers and engaged stakeholders, using a semi-structured interview guideline. We designed the survey as an explorative, semi-quantitative, self-completion online questionnaire, using the online tool &ldquo;LimeSurvey&rdquo;. A Repeated Measures Dataset on Public Responses to the COVID-19 Pandemic: Social Norms, Attitudes, Behaviors, Conspiracy Thinking, and (Mis)Information

<p>We present a quantitative repeated measures dataset from intensive longitudinal research (diary survey) conducted with participants drawn from a nationally representative sample of the German population. This diary survey addresses a wide range of variables relevant to the COVID-19 pandemic, including information seeking, attitudes towards science, public health, and related behaviors.&nbsp; Respondents were asked about their thoughts, challenges, concerns, and experiences related to the pandemic. Survey responses were requested every two weeks from November 2020 and September 2021 for a total of 18 stages of data collection. The diary survey responses were all matched to the same individual. Using the unique identifier for each individual, the diary survey dataset can be analyzed in concert with a larger representative survey sample that was conducted three times within the same research project over this time period. The diary dataset we present here includes socio-demographic information and other potentially relevant variables, ready for secondary analysis.<br> <br> Initial sample frame: <em>N </em>= 1,480</p> <p>Initial diary survey sub-sample: <em>N </em>= 133</p>

Modeling to determine when to re-open HIV services during COVID-19 pandemic

<p><b>The Risks and Benefits of Providing HIV Services during the COVID-19 Pandemic</b></p> <p><b>Introduction</b></p> <p>The COVID-19 pandemic has caused widespread disruptions including to health services. In the early response to the pandemic many countries restricted population movements and some health services were suspended or limited. In late 2020 and early 2021 some countries re-imposed restrictions. Health authorities need to balance the potential harms of additional SARS-CoV-2 transmission due to contacts associated with health services against the benefits of those services, including fewer new HIV infections and deaths. This paper examines these trade-offs for select HIV services. </p> <p><b>Methods</b></p> <p>We used four HIV simulation models (Goals, HIV Synthesis, Optima HIV and EMOD) to estimate the benefits of continuing HIV services in terms of fewer new HIV infections and deaths. We used three COVID-19 transmission models (Covasim, Cooper/Smith and a simple contact model) to estimate the additional deaths due to SARS-CoV-2 transmission among health workers and clients. We examined four HIV services: voluntary medical male circumcision, HIV diagnostic testing, viral load testing and programs to prevent mother-to-child transmission. We compared COVID-19 deaths in 2020 and 2021 with HIV deaths occurring now and over the next 50 years discounted to present value. The models were applied to countries with a range of HIV and COVID-19 epidemics.</p> <p><b>Results</b></p> <p>Maintaining these HIV services could lead to additional COVID-19 deaths of 0.002 to 0.15 per 10,000 clients. HIV-related deaths averted are estimated to be much larger, 19 - 146 discounted deaths per 10,000 clients.</p> <p><b>Discussion</b></p> <p>While there is some additional short-term risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission associated with providing HIV services, the risk of additional COVID-19 deaths is at least 100 times less than the HIV deaths averted by those services. Ministries of Health need to take into account many factors in deciding when and how to offer essential health services during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work shows that the benefits of continuing key HIV services are far larger than the risks of additional SARS-CoV-2 transmission.</p>

Impairment of aversive episodic memories during Covid-19 pandemic: The impact of emotional context on memory processes

<p>The threatening context of the COVID-19 pandemic provided a unique setting to study the effects of negative psychological symptoms on memory processes. Episodic memory is an essential function of the human being related to the ability to store and remember experiences and anticipate possible events in the future. Studying this function in this context is crucial to understand what effects the pandemic will have on the formation of episodic memories. To study this, the formation of episodic memories was evaluated by free recall, recognition, and episode order tasks for an aversive and neutral content. The results indicated that aversive episodic memory is impaired both in the free recall task and in the recognition task. Even the beneficial effect that emotional memory usually has for the episodic order was undermined as there were no differences between the neutral and aversive condition. The present work adds to the evidence that indicates that the level of activation does not modify memory processes in a linear way, which also depends on the type of recall and the characteristics of the content to be encoded.</p>

Building Interprofessional Learning in the Midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Implementation of Online Simulation for Students in Health Profession

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>COVID-19 has significantly affected the learning process of health institutions. It is inevitable that face-to-face learning activities will shift to online learning, including Interprofessional Education (IPE). The purpose of this article is to describe our experiences in developing a simulation of a two-day interprofessional learning and teaching session for students in nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, environmental sanitation, medical laboratory technology, dental health, and nutrition. A total of 956 students, 112 lecturers, and 15 standardized patients (SP) took part in this research. The study conducted in 6 schools of health profession in Indonesia. Students were assigned to two simulation models. The data were collected using an online questionnaire with the variables readiness to cooperate, interprofessional group discussions, and facilitator role with a 5-point Likert scale. In the implementation of the two simulation models, significant results have been demonstrated and their uniqueness is revealed. The simulation models that make direct anamnesis of the SP results in a higher level of readiness for IPE learning, and is significantly different. Meanwhile, the simulation model that is preceded by a scenario discussion process before making anamnesis to the SP shows a significantly positive attitude to the interprofessional groups discussion and the role of the facilitator.</p> <p><strong>Keywords:</strong> interprofessional education, COVID-19 pandemic, online simulation, health professionals, standardized patient</p>

Students' Perception towards e-learning during COVID-19 Pandemic in Indonesia

<p>The study explores university students&#39; perceptions of e-learning in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic. The study finds that students prefer e-learning because it enables them to connect with their lecturers and fellow students and engage with their study materials at their leisure, and with the freedom to choose their preferred location and time. One of the key reason students choose e-learning is the ease with which they may obtain study resources. The research methods used with a quantitative model, where the sample tested represented the student of 1137 respondents from 43 universities in Indonesia.&nbsp; The study&#39;s findings show the weakness of e-learning is that the majority of respondents responded in turn to interaction with lecturers (52,7%). The study also identified that the majority of respondents have a moderate mastery of technology, 1038 individuals (77.6%), while the remainder has poor knowledge of technology, as many as 52 people (3.9%).&nbsp; According to the study, e-learning technology enables quick access to information, which results in students developing a favorable attitude toward it based on its utility, self-efficacy, the convenience of use, and student behavior related to e-learning. The study verifies the utility of e-learning by demonstrating how it enables students to study from any geographical location, which is not achievable with face-to-face instruction.</p>

All Hands on Deck' or Separate Lifeboats? Public support for European Economic Solidarity during the Covid-19 pandemic

<p>What are the sources of public support for international aid in times of crises? This paper<br> investigates the determinants of public support for the EU Covid-19 aid package (&rsquo;NextGenera-<br> tionEU&rsquo;, NGEU), the largest aid package in EU history. We show that although public support<br> for within-EU redistribution is influenced by long-standing factors such as ideology and citizen<br> identities, endorsement or opposition cues taken from elite actors are important determinants<br> of public support for aid in times of crises. Conversely, the effects of policy details about the<br> aid package are more mixed. Using what is to the best of our knowledge the first EU-wide<br> study on public opinion on the Covid-19 rescue package, our vignette experiment shows that<br> short-term shifts in support for the rescue package are driven mostly by elite endorsement<br> cues rather than information about the precise terms of aid or amount. We also find that the<br> role of elite endorsement cues varies across different subsets of the population depending on<br> their level of political sophistication, national level attachment and country context. Thus, in<br> the face of multidimensional decision-making in times of crises, national institutions are key<br> catalyst of moving short-term support for policies of international solidarity. We discuss how<br> our findings have implications for democratic governance and accountability in the EU.</p>

Survey of risk perception, trust, and behavioral intention during the COVID-19 pandemic

<p>Early public health strategies to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the United States relied on non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) as vaccines and therapeutic treatments were not yet available. Implementation of NPIs, primarily social distancing and mask wearing, varied widely between communities within the US due to variable government mandates, as well as differences in attitudes and opinions. To understand the interplay of trust, risk perception, behavioral intention, and disease burden, we developed a survey instrument to study attitudes concerning COVID-19 and pandemic behavioral change in three states: Idaho, Texas, and Vermont. We designed our survey (<em>n </em>= 1034) to detect whether these relationships were significantly different in rural populations. The best fitting structural equation models show that trust indirectly affects protective pandemic behaviors via health and economic risk perception. We explore two different variations of this social cognitive model: the first assumes behavioral intention affects future disease burden while the second assumes that observed disease burden affects behavioral intention. In our models we include several exogenous variables to control for demographic and geographic effects. Notably, political ideology is the only exogenous variable which significantly affects all aspects of the social cognitive model (trust, risk perception, and behavioral intention). While there is a direct negative effect associated with rurality on disease burden, likely due to the protective effect of low population density in the early pandemic waves, we found a marginally significant, positive, indirect effect of rurality on disease burden via decreased trust (<em>p</em> = 0.095). This trust deficit creates additional vulnerabilities to COVID-19 in rural communities which also have reduced healthcare capacity. Increasing trust by methods such as in-group messaging could potentially remove some of the disparities inferred by our models and increase NPI effectiveness.</p>
