Data for a global meta-analysis of passive experimental warming effects on plant traits and community properties
This database contains the data used in a global meta-analysis of warming effects on plants. L0 data are available upon request; they include the raw data from 126 warming experiments. The L1 data are the result of merged L0 data and are cleaned for typos and are standardized names. L1 data contain plant trait and community property measurements in both warmed and ambient conditions. L2 data contain the effect sizes of warming for each study. Passivity-Based Control for a Micro Air Vehicle using Unit Quaternions

In this paper the development and practical implementation of a Passivity-Based
Control (PBC) algorithm to stabilize an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) described with unit
quaternions are presented. First, a mathematical model based on Euler-Lagrange formulation
using a logarithmic mapping in the quaternion space is introduced. Then, a new methodology:
a quaternion-passivity-based control is derived, which does not compute excessive and complex Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) for synthesizing the control law, making a significant advantage in comparison with other methodologies. Therefore, the control design to a system as the quad-rotor is easily solved by the proposed methodology. Another advantage is the possibility to stabilize quad-rotor full dynamics which may not be possible with classical PBC techniques. Experimental results and numerical simulations to validate our proposed scheme are presented.

Passive Non-Cooperative Intruder State Estimation and Optimal-Feedback Avoidance System for UAVs

In recent years, numerous applications for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have emerged, such as manufacturing inspections and reconnaissance. Ensuring safety is crucial for integrating UAS into the National Airspace System (NAS); this integration is being conducted on the basis of a century of experience that has made manned aircraft operations incredibly safe.

A key challenge for unmanned flight is the inability to "detect-and-avoid" (DAA) obstacles. Various DAA systems have been proposed in recent years, each employing different sensor modalities. Cooperative systems enable air vehicles to exchange state information, while devices like the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) use satellite navigation sensors and transponders, respectively, to broadcast position data. Additionally, the Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS) led to the creation of the ACAS-XU standard for unmanned aircraft.

The DAA capability for UAS must be extended to address non-cooperative intruders. This paper introduces an integrated vision-based passive collision alert system (PCAS) and guidance system that is designed to detect and optimally avoid collision with non-cooperative intruders. The system can adhere to recently-introduced regulations for safety zones and can be customized pre-flight. Hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) simulation demonstrates the feasibility for deployment on UAS in a plug-and-play fashion.

Social network shrinking is explained by active and passive effects but not increasing selectivity with age in wild macaques

Evidence of social disengagement, network narrowing, and social selectivity with advancing age in several non-human animals challenges our understanding of the causes of social ageing. Natural animal populations are needed to test whether social ageing and selectivity occur under natural predation and extrinsic mortality pressures, and longitudinal studies are particularly valuable to disentangle the contribution of within-individual ageing from the demographic processes that shape social ageing at the population level. Data on wild Assamese macaques (Macaca assamensis) were collected between 2013 and 2020 at the Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand. We investigated the social behaviour of 61 adult females observed for 13,270 hours to test several mechanistic hypotheses of social ageing and evaluated the consistency between patterns from mixed-longitudinal and within-individual analyses. With advancing age, females reduced the size of their social network, which could not be explained by an overall increase in the time spent alone, but by an age-related decline in mostly active, but also passive, behaviour, best demonstrated by within-individual analyses. A selective tendency to approach preferred partners was maintained into old age but did not increase. Our results contribute to our understanding of the driver of social ageing in natural animal populations and suggest that social disengagement and selectivity follow independent trajectories during ageing.

CONSTRUCTION OF A PASSIVE SOLAR THERMAL AIR HEATER USING ALUMINUM CANS

Abstract:

The technology of solar air heating system is an emerging field in Nigeria. Due to the epileptic power supply in Nigeria, alternative energy sources are beings ought. This project involves the construction of a portable solar air heater. Theconstruction of the solar air heater was done using relevant equations to size the major components of the system. The materials for the components were then selected with consideration to the market availability and cost of the materials.

The system was then constructed using the selected materials, and the performance was also studied. The system consists of a flat-plate collector with a single layer of glass on top, and an absorber plate made of aluminium soda cans.

The system was tested for three days, and the highest outlet temperature recorded was 48°C. The highest irradiance recorded was 925 W/m² on the first day of testing. The highest efficiency recorded from the system was 41% on the first day of testing.

Keywords: Solar energy, Solar air heater, Aluminium soda cans.
