Gender inequalities on editorial boards of indexed pediatrics journals

<p>These raw data belong to the study &ldquo;Gender inequalities on editorial boards of indexed pediatrics journals&rdquo;.&nbsp;</p> <p>The presence of women in decision-making positions, such as on editorial committees of biomedical journals, is not the same as that of men. This paper analyzes the gender composition of editorial committees (EBMs) and editor-in-chief (ECs) positions of pediatric journals.&nbsp;The gender of EBMs and ECs of 125 journals classified in the pediatrics area of the Journal Citation Report (JCR) were analyzed.&nbsp;The following indicators were calculated: gender distribution of ECs and EBMs by journal, publisher, subject speciality, country, quartile of the journal in JCR and country of affiliation of the members.&nbsp;The total number of EBMs was 4,242. The distribution by sex of the ECs was 19.44% women and 80.56% men, while the EBMs were 33.05% women and 66.95% men. Twenty journals exhibited a greater representation of women than men, and in four there was parity. Journals with greater participation of women specialized in nursing, physical therapy and were related to nutrition (lactation and breastfeeding).&nbsp;&nbsp;Only one-fifth of ECs and one-third of EBMs are female. Women&#39;s participation is higher in journals related to nursing, physical and occupational therapy, and nutrition. Gait analysis results for different pediatric prosthetic knee prescription protocols

<p>Traditionally, children who need a prosthetic knee joint are not provided with one in their first prosthesis. An alternative Early Knee protocol provides a flexing knee in the first prosthesis. The purpose of this multi-site study was to examine kinematic outcomes during walking in separate groups of young children in an Early prosthetic knee prescription protocol (EK) versus a traditional prosthetic knee protocol (TK), along with a population of children without lower limb amputations. Eighteen children aged 12 months to five years were recruited for this study at two clinical sites, six in each of the three groups. Children in the two prosthesis groups had unilateral limb loss and had been treated at one site with the TK protocol or at another with the EK protocol. All children walked at self-selected speed while kinematic data were collected using similar Vicon motion analysis systems. Data include joint angles, extrema, and ranges of motion used for the determination of temporal and spatial gait parameters and swing-phase clearance adaptations. </p>

Host biomarkers and combinatorial scores for the detection of serious and invasive bacterial infection in pediatric patients with fever without source

<h3><span>Background </span></h3> <p><span>Improved tools are required to detect bacterial infection in children with fever without source (FWS), especially when younger than 3 years old. The aim of the present study was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of a host signature combining for the first time two viral-induced biomarkers, tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and interferon </span><span>γ</span><span>-induced protein-10 (IP-10), with a bacterial-induced one, C-reactive protein (CRP), to reliably predict bacterial infection in children with fever without source (FWS) and to compare its performance to routine individual biomarkers (CRP, procalcitonin (PCT), white blood cell and absolute neutrophil counts, TRAIL, and IP-10) and to the Labscore.</span></p> <h3><span>Methods</span></h3> <p><span>This was a prospective diagnostic accuracy study conducted in a single tertiary center in children aged less than 3 years old presenting with FWS. Reference standard etiology (bacterial or viral) was assigned by a panel of three independent experts. Diagnostic accuracy (AUC, sensitivity, specificity) of host individual biomarkers and combinatorial scores was evaluated in comparison to reference standard outcomes (expert panel adjudication and microbiological diagnosis). </span></p> <h3><span>Results </span></h3> <p><span>241 patients were included. 68 of them (28%) were diagnosed with a bacterial infection and 5 (2%) with invasive bacterial infection (IBI). Labscore, ImmunoXpert, and CRP attained the highest AUC values for the detection of bacterial infection, respectively 0.854 (0.804–0.905), 0.827 (0.764–0.890), and 0.807 (0.744–0.869). Labscore and ImmunoXpert outperformed the other single biomarkers with higher sensitivity and/or specificity and showed comparable performance to one another although slightly reduced sensitivity in children &lt; 90 days of age.</span></p> <h3><span>Conclusion </span></h3> <p><span>Labscore and ImmunoXpert demonstrate high diagnostic accuracy for safely discriminating bacterial infection in children with FWS aged under and over 90 days, </span><span>supporting their adoption in the assessment of febrile patients. </span></p>

N-cadherin dynamically regulates pediatric glioma cell migration in complex environments

<p>Pediatric high-grade gliomas are highly invasive and essentially incurable. Glioma cells migrate between neurons and glia, along axon tracts, and through extracellular matrix surrounding blood vessels and underlying the pia. Mechanisms that allow adaptation to such complex environments are poorly understood. N-cadherin is highly expressed in pediatric gliomas and is associated with shorter survival. We found that inter-cellular homotypic N-cadherin interactions differentially regulate glioma migration according to the microenvironment, stimulating migration on cultured neurons or astrocytes but inhibiting invasion into reconstituted or astrocyte-deposited extracellular matrix. N-cadherin localizes to filamentous connections between migrating leader cells but to epithelial-like junctions between followers. Leader cells have more surface and recycling N-cadherin, increased YAP1/TAZ signaling, and increased proliferation relative to followers. YAP1/TAZ signaling is dynamically regulated as leaders and followers change position, leading to altered N-cadherin levels and organization. Together, the results suggest that pediatric glioma cells adapt to different microenvironments by regulating N-cadherin dynamics and cell-cell contacts.</p>

Parental behavior influence in pediatric dentistry: a randomized observational study

<p>This work examines the influence of parental attitudes on their child&#39;s behavior in pediatric dentistry.</p> <p>This prospective randomized observational study was conducted at the pediatric dentistry consultation. All sessions were filmed. Two experts collected data using the modified Venham scale for children and a hetero-rating scale for parents. 20 observers scored with the same tools a randomized selection of recordings of 5 children per group. Data were analyzed using SPSS software.</p> <p>60 children divided into 3 groups of 20: 4 years and under, 5 to 6 years and over 7 years. Internal validation showed a very high correlation (Cronbach&#39;s&nbsp;a&gt; 0.920). There is a correlation between parental behavior and that of children in the dental office in the 3 age groups for observers (Cronbach&#39;s&nbsp;a&gt; 0.700).&nbsp;</p>
