Curated data-set of crystal-structure prototypes of binary and ternary sp-d valent compounds

Curated collection of binary and ternary compounds of sp-valent elements and d-valent elements and their crystal-structure prototype. The data set includes binary and pseudo-binary compounds in binary prototypes (BinaryPrototype-BinaryCompound.csv), offstoichoimetric and ternary compounds in binary prototypes (BinaryPrototype-BinaryOffstoichiometricAndTernaryCompound.csv) and ternary compounds in ternary prototypes (TernaryPrototype-TernaryCompound.csv). The first column in each data set corresponds to the crystal-structure prototype, the second column to the chemical composition. Ternary compositions labelled A-B+C indicate that element B and element C occupy the same sublattice of the crystal structure. A+B-C correspondingly indicates that element A and element B occupy the same sublattice. These data sets were used to construct structure maps for predicting the crystal structure of a compound from only its chemical composition. For details on curation, further discussions and structure maps see original publications (Chem. Mater. 28, 2550−2556, 2016 and Modelling Simul. Mater. Sci. Eng. 25, 074002, 2017).

Checklist v. 1.0 - Survey volcanic crises exercises: from open-question questionnaires to a prototype checklist

Volcanic crisis exercises are usually run to test response capabilities, communication protocols, and decision-making procedures by those agencies, such as volcano observatories and/or Civil Protection authorities, with responsibilities to cope with scenarios of volcanic unrest with inherent uncertainty. During the last decades, the use of questionnaires has been increased to evaluate people’s knowledge on volcanic hazards and their perception of risk, which could affect their preparedness to respond to emergency measures plans. In this paper, we show the study carried out within the EUROVOLC European project focused on extracting information on the experience gained during volcanic-crisis exercises by the project’s participants and beyond. In particular, we first distributed an open-question questionnaire survey within the project community. Based on the results obtained, we developed a more user-friendly online multi-choice questionnaire that was submitted to different volcanological communities within and outside the project. From the answers to the on-line questionnaire, we extracted a prototype checklist for guiding those who need to design such exercises in the future. Here, we give details on the lessons learnt from this study, in particular about the need to increase training activities, to improve external (between players and general public/media) communication tools, equipment and protocols and to better define decision-makers' needs. Our preliminary results confirm that this type of survey is a very useful tool for gathering information on participants' experience and knowledge, and to understand which data and information may be useful when designing exercises for scientists, emergency managers and others involved in a volcanic crisis.

Pairwise distance demarcation of species in the family Coronaviridae. a, Diagonal matrix of PPDs of 2,505 viruses clustered according to 49 coronavirus species, 39 established and 10 pending or tentative, and ordered from the most to least populous species, from left to right; green and white, PPDs smaller and larger than the inter-species threshold, respectively. Areas of the green squares along the diagonal are proportional to the virus sampling of the respective species, and virus prototypes of the five most sampled species are specified to the left; asterisks indicate species that include viruses whose intra-species PPDs crossed the inter-species threshold (threshold 'violators'). b, Maximal intra-species PPDs (x axis, linear scale) plotted against virus sampling (y axis, log scale) for 49 species (green dots) of the Coronaviridae. Indicated are the acronyms of virus prototypes of the seven most sampled species. Green and blue plot sections represent intra-species and intra-subgenera PPD ranges. The vertical black line indicates the inter-species threshold. c, Shown are the PDs of non-identical residues (y axis) for four viruses representing three major phylogenetic lineages (clades) of the species Severe acute respiratorysyndrome-related coronavirus (panel b) and all pairs of the 256 viruses of this species ('all pairs'). The PD values were derived from pairwise distances in the MSA that were calculated using an identity matrix. Panels a and b were adopted from the DEmARC v.1.4 output. in The species Severe acute respiratory syndromerelated coronavirus: classifying 2019-nCoV and naming it SARS-CoV-2
