Failure and deformation characteristics of shale under true triaxial stress loading and unloading under water retention and seepage
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>A multifunctional true triaxial fluid-structure coupling system was used to conduct water retention and seepage tests of shale under true triaxial loading and unloading stress paths. The stress-strain evolution law of shale specimens under different experimental conditions was obtained, and the corresponding deformation and strength law was analyzed. The evolution law and failure characteristics of cracks in shale were obtained by CT scanning images before and after the experiment. The results show that under the condition of water retention, the volumetric strain of shale specimen increases first, then decreases and finally continues to increase with the increase of deviational stress, indicating that the volumetric change has experienced a process of compaction-expansion-compacting. The partial stress-maximum horizontal strain curve of the sample increases first and then decreases, while the deformation of the sample in the direction of intermediate principal stress shows the characteristics of repeated compression and expansion. In the seepage test, the permeability - maximum horizontal strain curve can be divided into two parts before and after fracture according to the deviant stress - maximum horizontal strain curve. Before fracture, the compression velocity of the specimen in the loading direction exceeds the expansion velocity <span>in the unloading direction, resulting in a decrease in volume and a decrease in permeability. With the increase of deviatoric stress, cracks occur inside the particles and continue to spread from the tip until the cracks break through the shale specimen. In this process, the pore fissure area increases and the permeability of the sample increases rapidly. In terms of fractur</span>e evolution, for the water-retaining test, dense tensile and shear cracks appear on the failure plane perpendicular to the direction of maximum and minimum principal stress, and complex shear fracture network appears on the failure plane perpendicular to the direction of intermediate principal stress. For the seepage test, heavy shear failure occurs throughout the original fracture of the sample. With the increase of the penetration depth, the crack shape on the failure surface perpendicular to the direction of intermediate principal stress gradually changes from single type to complex type.</span></p>
Model data to investigate wood frog abundance in 17-year post harvest variable retention mixed wood forests
<p>Variable retention forest harvesting aims to reduce negative effect of harvesting on forest biodiversity, but its effectiveness is not well understood for many taxa. To better understand the effects of variable retention forest management and environmental features on amphibians, we used pitfall traps to capture wood frogs (<em>Lithobates sylvaticus</em>) across 4 levels of retention harvest (clearcut [0%], 20%, 50%, and unharvested control [100%]), and 2 forest types (deciduous and coniferous), in 17-year post-harvest forests in northwest Alberta. We mapped breeding sites and used a terrain moisture index (Depth-to-Water) derived from airborne LiDAR to examine relationships between relative abundance, breeding site proximity and soil moisture. Retention level alone had no effect on relative abundance, but in late summer (July and August) there was a significant interaction between retention level and forest type: capture rates decreased with amount of retention for deciduous forests, but increased with amount of retention in conifer forests. During late summer, capture rates were higher in conifer forests than in deciduous forests, with soil moisture (lower Depth-to-Water) positively related to capture rates. Though timber retention may be beneficial to wood frogs in the short-term, any impacts of forest harvesting on wood frog abundance was undetectable in stands 17 years post-harvest. </p>

Patient-reported outcomes via electronic health record portal vs. telephone: process and retention data in a pilot trial of anxiety or depression symptoms in epilepsy
<p>Objective: To close gaps between research and clinical practice, tools are needed for efficient pragmatic trial recruitment and patient-reported outcome(PROM) collection. The objective was to assess feasibility and process measures for patient-reported outcome collection in a randomized trial comparing electronic health record(EHR) patient portal questionnaires to telephone interview among adults with epilepsy and anxiety or depression symptoms.</p> <p>Results: Participants were 60% women, 77% White/non-Hispanic, with mean age 42.5 years. Among 15 individuals randomized to EHR portal, 10(67%, CI 41.7-84.8%) met the 6-month retention endpoint, versus 100%(CI 79.6-100%) in the telephone group(p=0.04). EHR outcome collection at 6 months required 11.8 minutes less research staff time per participant than telephone (5.9, CI 3.3-7.7 vs. 17.7, CI 14.1-20.2). Subsequent telephone contact after unsuccessful EHR attempts enabled near complete data collection and still saved staff time.</p> <p>Discussion: Data from this randomized pilot study of pragmatic outcome collection methods for patients with anxiety or depression symptoms in epilepsy includes baseline participant characteristics, recruitment flow resulting from a novel EHR-based, care-embedded recruitment process, and data on retention along with various process measures at 6-months.</p>

Data from: Patterns and drivers of atmospheric nitrogen deposition retention in global forests
<p>Forests are the largest carbon sink in terrestrial ecosystems, and the impact of nitrogen (N) deposition on this carbon sink depends on the fate of external N inputs. However, the patterns and driving factors of N retention in different forest compartments remain elusive. In this study, we synthesized 408 observations from global forest <sup>15</sup>N tracer experiments to reveal the variation and underlying mechanisms of <sup>15</sup>N retention in plants and soils. The results showed that the average total ecosystem <sup>15</sup>N retention in global forests was 63.04 ± 1.23%, with the soil pool being the main N sink (45.76 ± 1.29%). Plants absorbed 17.28 ± 0.83% of <sup>15</sup>N, with more allocated to leaves (5.83 ± 0.63%) and roots (5.84 ± 0.44%). In subtropical and tropical forests, <sup>15</sup>N was mainly absorbed by plants and mineral soils, while the organic soil layer in temperate forests retained more <sup>15</sup>N. Additionally, forests retained more <sup>15</sup>NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup> than <sup>15</sup>NO<sub>3</sub><sup>−</sup>, primarily due to the stronger capacity of the organic soil layer to retain <sup>15</sup>NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>. The mechanisms of <sup>15</sup>N retention varied among ecosystem compartments, with total ecosystem <sup>15</sup>N retention affected by N deposition. Plant <sup>15</sup>N retention was influenced by vegetative and microbial nutrient demands, while soil <sup>15</sup>N retention was regulated by climate factors and soil nutrient supply. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of climate and nutrient supply and demand in regulating forest N retention and provides data to further explore the impacts of N deposition on forest carbon sequestration.</p>

<p>This record contains data related to article “Tumor Treating Fields enhance chemotherapy efficacy by increasing cellular drug uptake and retention in mesothelioma cells”</p> <p><span>Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) applied with standard chemotherapy have been approved for the first-line treatment of unresectable pleural mesothelioma (PM), an aggressive malignancy with limited effective therapy options.</span></p> <p><span>In this study, we demonstrated that the simultaneous exposure to TTFields and doxorubicin or vinorelbine enhanced treatment efficacy in patient-derived PM cells by increasing intracellular drug concentrations. This was achieved by modulating several genes that encode transport proteins, such as the downregulation of P-glycoprotein.</span></p> <p><span>Using specific, sensitive and quantitative analytical techniques, we observed a more than 70% increase in intracellular concentrations of doxorubicin and vinorelbine in samples treated with TTFields, and a greater than 50% increase in drug uptake in cells exposed to TTFields and pemetrexed. This result indicates that the increased drug concentration observed in TTFields treated cells is significant not only for drugs that are P-gp substrates but also suggests that TTFields could potentially affect other efflux pumps. However, the co-exposure to the drug and TTFields was critical to increasing intracellular drug levels, highlighting the necessity of concurrent use with drugs to enhance the antiproliferative effects of treatment.</span></p> <p><span>The <em>in vitro</em> findings were further corroborated by <em>in vivo</em> pharmacokinetic experiments in mice subcutaneously injected with epithelioid PM tumors. Indeed, a 30% increase in intratumor concentrations was observed when vinorelbine was administered with TTFields.</span></p> <p><span>Our findings suggest that TTFields could be a well-tolerated approach for enhancing intratumoral drug levels and potentially achieving a more significant therapeutic impact on PM treatment.</span></p>

<p>Weber soils SWRC.7z: zipped file with the Windows folders that hold all input and output data related to fitting the RIA parameterization (de Rooij, 2022, 2024a) to soil water retention data of 13 soils.</p> <p>Weber soils UHCC.7z: the zipped folder structure with fits of several models (de Rooij, 2024b, c) for the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity for the same 13 soils as the other file. Rapid recovery of boreal rove beetle (Staphylinidae) assemblages 16 years after variable retention harvest
<p>Post-harvest recovery<span> of biodiversity is one of the important goals in modern forestry. A variable retention (VR) approach has been of particular interest in North America because it promotes rapid faunal recovery while </span>minimizing the negative lasting impacts of logging on the natural fauna. <span>We studied responses of </span>rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) to a broad range of retention harvests (2, 10, 20, 50, and 75 % retention) in comparison to uncut controls as part of the <span>Ecosystem Management Emulating Natural Disturbance (EMEND) experiment in the boreal mixedwood forest of western Canada. We sampled beetles using pitfall traps 1, 2, 11, and 16 years post-harvest in replicated (n=3) stands representing four cover types (deciduous-dominated, deciduous with spruce understory, mixed, and coniferous-dominated). We collected</span> 74,263 individuals distributed across 99 species (excluding Aleocharinae). <span>Estimated species richness was highest in clear-cuts until year 11, but by year 16 species richness was similar among treatments. Species composition initially varied strongly in relation to the intensity of harvest treatments, but overall variation decreased with time</span>, and by year 16, species composition overlapped among most treatment combinations. Assemblages recovered more quickly in <span>early successional (deciduous-dominated) </span>than in <span>late successional (</span>mixed and <span>conifer-dominated) stands. Overall, our results show that rove beetle assemblages in stands harvested to all VR prescriptions converged more rapidly toward those in fire-origin mature stands than did assemblages in clear-cuts over the first 16 years post-harvest. Thus, it demonstrates that even modest levels of forest retention can facilitate the recovery of staphylinid assemblages in managed landscapes.</span></p>
