Pink, scale series between base of first dorsal-fin spine and the upper lateral line (in this example, 4½); yellow, one of the scales in the upper lateral line; blue, postorbital scales; purple, infraorbital scales (which are counted as a cheek scale row); different shades of grey, scale series on the cheek ventrally to the infraorbital series (in this example, there are five scale rows on the cheek). The naked anterior half of the cheek (green area) is a synapomorphy of Geophagus.
