Recognition of dominant driving factors behind sap flow of Liquidambar formosana based on back-propagation neutral network method

<p><i><span>Aims:</span></i> This study focused on the applicability of back-propagation (BP) neural networks in simulating sap flow (SF) using meteorological factors and a phenological index (<i><span>PI</span></i>) for <i><span>Liquidambar formosana</span></i><span>,</span> a deciduous broad-leaf tree species in subtropical China, and thus providing a useful and promising alternative to traditional methods for transpiration prediction.</p> <p><i><span>Methods: </span></i>Three-layered BP models with an architecture 4-10-1 <span>(four neurons in the input layer, ten neurons in the hidden layer and one neuron in the output layer) </span>were trained and tested using the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm based on in situ observations of SF and concurrent microclimate at the Qianyanzhou Ecological Station, Jiangxi Province, Southeast China. The model performance was verified with testing data not used in model development.</p> <p><i><span>Results: </span></i>The BP models with eight input combinations proved a satisfactory fit: the determination coefficients (<i><span>R</span></i><span>2</span>) and fitting accuracies (<i><span>Acc</span></i>) (about 0.8 and 70%) were significantly higher than those of the multivariate linear regression (MLR) (about 0.5 and 50%), indicating their advantage in solving complex nonlinear problems involved in transpiration. In addition, the BP models showed a bit better performance by adding <i><span>PI</span></i><i> </i><span>to</span> the input family. The best BP model was achieved taking air temperature (<i><span>T</span></i><span>a</span>), relative humidity (<i><span>RH</span></i>), average net radiation (<i><span>ANR</span></i>) and <i><span>PI</span></i> as the input and sap flux density (<i><span>v</span></i><span>s</span>) as the output, with maximum <i><span>R</span></i><span>2</span> and <i><span>Acc</span></i> as high as 0.95 and 90%, respectively.</p> <p><i><span>Conclusions: </span></i><span>The</span><i> </i><span>BP</span><i> </i><span>models with input combination of </span><i><span>T</span></i><span>a</span><span>, </span><i><span>RH, ANR </span></i><span>and</span><i><span> PI </span></i><span>mirrored very well measured daily variations in </span><i><span>v</span></i><span>s</span>. The results could be used to fine-tune sap flow estimation by <i><span>Liquidambar formosana</span></i>, and thus shed light on the eco-hydrological process related to transpiration for deciduous broad-leaf trees.</p>

Carpophiline-ID: An interactive matrix-based key to the carpophiline sap beetles (Coleoptera, Nitidulidae) of Eastern North America

<p>We present Carpophiline-ID, a matrix-based LucidTM key, for the adult stage of the known species of Carpophilinae (<em>Coleoptera: Nitidulidae</em>) of North America, east of the Mississippi River. We provide an overview of the features and technical specifications used to build the key. The list of terminal taxa used in the key represents the most current regional account for Carpophilinae, a beetle subfamily of agricultural and ecological importance. We discuss the value of matrix-based, free access keys for the identification of difficult taxa.</p>

SAP Application Log Analysis pilot dataset

<p>A CSV file prepared from application logs stemming from an SAP BI Warehouse system. This realistic dataset was generated as a means to showcase the SAP pilot use-case of the TOREADOR project.</p> <p>Each line corresponds to a user action.</p> <p>Extid, object and subobject were extracted from the BI system logs, along with the user name and event date.<br> Role was retrieved from the standard user actions</p> <p>Label indicates whether the event is benign or malign - Elevation_of_privileges is an event the user should not be able to perform within the boundaries of his role. Priv_abuse is about a privileged account performing an action breaching a confidentiality clause (e.g. an administrator reading sensitive data). Forgotten_user is about a user who stayed inactive for a long time before being used again (e.g. an employee who left the company where the account was not terminated). Records where no malign activity was detected were marked &#39;benign&#39;.</p> <p>Outbushours was computed from the time of the action, and mapped to &#39;inside&#39; or &#39;outside&#39; business hours.</p>

Data from: Match and mismatch between dietary switches and microbial partners in plant sap-feeding insects

Some animal groups associate with the same vertically-transmitted microbial symbionts over extended periods of evolutionary time, punctuated by occasional symbiont switches to different microbial taxa. Here we test the oft-repeated suggestion that symbiont switches are linked with host diet changes, focusing on hemipteran insects of the suborder Auchenorrhyncha. These insects include the only animals that feed on plant xylem sap through the life cycle, as well as taxa that feed on phloem sap and plant parenchyma cells. Ancestral state reconstruction provides strong statistical support for a xylem-feeding auchenorrhynchan ancestor bearing the dual symbiosis with the primary symbiont Sulcia (Bacteroidetes) and companion symbiont "β-Sym" (β-proteobacteria). We identified 7 dietary transitions from xylem-feeding (six to phloem-feeding, one to parenchyma-feeding), but no reversions to xylem-feeding; five evolutionary losses of Sulcia, including replacements by yeast symbionts, exclusively in phloem/parenchyma-feeding lineages; and 14-15 losses of β-Sym, including 9 transitions to a different bacterial companion symbiont. Our analysis indicates that, although companion symbiont switching is not associated with shifts in host diet, Sulcia is likely required for xylem-feeding. Furthermore, the ancestral auchenorrhynchan bearing Sulcia and β-Sym likely represents the sole evolutionary origin of xylem feeding in the animal kingdom.
