Advancing the Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) in Radiation Research: An International Horizon-Style Exercise
<p>Over the past few decades, the chemical and ecotoxicology fields have been using the Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) framework to advance research and regulation. This framework offers an effective means to organize biological data into key events in the progression to an adverse outcome of interest to regulatory decision-making. The AOP framework is gaining traction within the radiation risk assessment community as the framework provides a linkage between experimentally derived biological data at different levels of biological organization with disease progression. It is envisioned that the AOP framework can strengthen the weight of evidence, decrease the uncertainty in radiation risk assessment, and enhance the understanding of radiation-induced effects at low doses and low dose rates. However, to advance the AOP framework within the field of radiation, uptake from the research community, policy makers, regulators and other stakeholders (e.g., industry) will be required.</p> <p>To explore the diversity of opinions and ideas on incorporating the AOP framework in research and regulation, an international horizon-style exercise is being undertaken by the Nuclear Energy Agency’s High-Level Group on Low Dose Research (HLG-LDR) Radiation/Chemical (Rad/Chem) AOP joint topical group. This exercise will identify the most important open questions regarding the use of the AOP framework in radiation research and regulation. The vision of the topical group is to demonstrate AOPs as an essential tool to characterize the knowledge domain, define evidence gaps, and ultimately, inform research directions based on knowledge from both the chemical and the radiation research communities. The first phase of the horizon-style exercise, the candidate question solicitation, is now complete with input from around the globe. Currently, a dedicated steering committee is sorting the collected questions with the intent to identifying key areas where radiation AOPs can support and identify challenges to its implementation in regulatory decision-making. Completion of this phase of the exercise will identify the most important questions for inclusion in an international survey. The survey will permit survey respondents to highlight priority questions specific to individual interests. The outcome of the international survey will guide future initiatives of the Rad/Chem AOP joint topical group, inform focused workshop topics, and ultimately facilitate the integration of the AOP framework into radiation risk assessment and radiation protection.</p>

Relative forelimb-hindlimb investment is associated with flight style, foraging strategy, and nestling period, but not nest type
<p>We investigated Dial's 2003 hypothesis that birds that rely more heavily upon flight as their primary mode of locomotion and thus invest more in their forelimbs than hindlimbs will experience selection for smaller body sizes, greater altriciality, and more complex nests. To test this hypothesis, we examined the skeletons of over 2,000 individuals from 313 species representing the majority of avian families and all major branches of the avian tree. We used the lengths of the sternal keel and long bones of the wing relative to the lengths of the leg long bones as an index of relative locomotor investment. We found that locomotor investment was predicted by flight style, foraging method, and length of nestling period, supporting Dial's hypothesis. Soaring birds and birds with more acrobatic flight styles, birds whose foraging methods were heavily reliant upon flight, and whose young spent more time in the nest tended to invest more in their forelimbs relative to hindlimbs. Nest type and body size were not significant predictors of relative forelimb-hindlimb investment, however, suggesting that the relationships among flight style, locomotor investment, and life history are not as tightly intertwined as Dial originally hypothesized.</p>

Risk-taking coping style correlates with SERT SNP290 polymorphisms in free-living great tits
<p>The coping style of an individual in relation to potentially dangerous situations has been suggested to be inherited in a polygenic fashion, being SERT one of the candidate genes. In this paper, we assessed in free-living great tits Parus major the association between SNP290 in the SERT promoter and three standard fear-related behaviors, namely the response of the birds to a black and white flag fixed to the top of the nest-box, distress calling rate of the birds in the hand once captured and the hissing call of incubating females when approached by a predator. We found a strong association between SNP290 polymorphism and the three risk-taking behaviors, with birds with genotype CT entering faster to the nest box with the flag and displaying more distress calls and less hissing calls. CT birds could therefore be described as more proactive than CC individuals. These results also suggest that hissing behavior should be regarded as a fear-induced shy behavior, and confirm that SERT has an important function in relation to risk aversion behaviors and coping style.</p>

<p>Our objective is to understand the influence of rearing styles and mindfulness skills in emotion dysregulation and BPD in adolescents. We tested the idea in this study. Firstly, we compared rearing styles, emotion dysregulation, and mindfulness skills between a clinical BPD group and a non-clinical control group. We sought to determine whether these characteristics were present in different levels in adolescents with and without BPD features or other psychopathologies. Later, we analyzed the effect of the different rearing styles and mindfulness skills in emotion dysregulation and borderline characteristics.</p>

Wmid-87fb8a - Headstud style Roman Brooch
An incomplete enamelled copper alloy Headstud style brooch, of Roman dating (AD 75 - AD 200). Approximately 95% of the brooch is present consisting of the bow, wings, foot, pin and hinge. The headloop, pin and catch plate are incomplete. In plan, the brooch is almost T-shaped, and rectangular in cross section. The bow head is angular (comma shaped) in profile. The headloop at the top of the brooch is incomplete, and is circular in nature. The bow is decorated by a circular decorative headstud, comprising two concentric circles. Below the headstud, the bow has been decorated by a column of lozenges running vertically down the bow. Traces of blue enamel are present within the recessed cells. Two horizontal ribs are present at the base of the bow, just above the foot. The wings have been decorated with a vertical rouletted rib. Roman 1st Century Dolphin Style Brooch
A 3D reconstruction of a metal detecting find of mine. The object is what I believe to be an incomplete copper alloy Colchester derivative (dolphin style) roman fibula brooch, commonly dated on Finds.Org as between AD 43 and AD 65. The pin and spring are missing and it is worn (approx 75% remaining) due to almost 2,000 years within the plough soil, however the head, bow and wings remain, with some surface decoration visible. The object is the size of a 2p coin. Processed in Agisoft Metashape by merging 2 scans of the top and bottom, each with around 35 images each, and merging the two chunks and removing texture noise from the putty used to hold it.
