Data from: Experimental contact zones reveal causes and targets of sexual selection in hybridizing lizards
Divergence in sexually selected traits in allopatry should affect the degree and direction of hybridization. However, few studies have established the causes and targets of sexual selection during secondary contact. Common wall lizards (Podarcis muralis) from north-central Italy have highly exaggerated male sexual traits compared to populations in Western Europe. Using experimental populations, we show that this creates asymmetries in male dominance, spatial habitat use and reproductive success upon secondary contact. Hybridization occurred almost exclusively between males of the Italian lineage and females of the Western European lineage. We provide evidence to suggest stronger ongoing selection on male sexual traits within the dominant Italian lineage. However, these same characters did not predict hybridization, and hybrid matings contributed little to variance in male reproductive success. Instead, most hybrid offspring were sired by Italian males displaying phenotypes associated with lower within-lineage reproductive success. Thus, highly directional hybridization arises because some Italian males are out-competed within their own lineage but remain competitive relative to males of the other lineage. This pattern of hybridization is consistent with the direction of introgression in natural contact zones, but our data suggest that sexual selection acting through hybridization may be weak at the leading edge of natural hybrid zones.
Data from: Amadori-glycated phosphatidylethanolamine enhances the physical stability and selective targeting ability of liposomes
Liposomes consisting of 100% phosphatidylcholine exhibit poor membrane fusion, cellular uptake and selective targeting capacities. To overcome these limitations, we used Amadori-glycated phosphatidylethanolamine, which is universally present in animals and commonly consumed in foods. We found that liposomes containing Amadori-glycated phosphatidylethanolamine exhibited significantly reduced negative membrane potential and demonstrated high cellular uptake.

A review of endangered wildlife hosts in Europe for selected pathogens to be targeted by One Health surveillance

EFSA has been asked by the EU-Commission to assess the prioritization of cross-border pathogens that threaten the Union to be used in setting up a coordinated surveillance system under the One Health (OH) approach. A list of 50 pathogen has been considered in a first stage by the OH Working Group of EFSA. Under this OH approach, the criteria to be applied for prioritization of pathogens in further steps should consider that emerging infectious diseases have arisen from or been identified in wildlife, with health implications for humans, domestic animals, and wildlife. The identified infectious diseases pose a threat to wildlife populations and biodiversity and are perceived by the society as real risks to wildlife conservation. We elaborated a list of potential endangered wildlife hosts distributed in Europe for each pathogen. Hosts species were classified as Near Threatened (NT), Vulnerable (BVU), Endangered (EN) and Critically Endangered (CE) based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Their endemicity status was also indicated. To consider a species as potential hosts, a literature review was performed in PubMED and diagnosis included direct detection of pathogen and immunological response. A complete table and data sources are presented in excel

Monitoring these states in situ can provide important feedback but is difficult in practice. The states are strongly influenced by local oxygenation, pH and redox conditions, often varying significantly at PDT treatment sites. To overcome this problem, we followed local PDT precursor state populations of PS compounds, via their fluorescence intensity response to systematically varied excitation light modulation. Thereby, we could demonstrate local monitoring of PDT precursor states of methylene blue (MB) and IRdye700DX (IR700), and determined their transitions rates under different oxygenation, pH and redox conditions. By fiber-optics, using one fiber for both excitation and fluorescence detection, the triplet and photo-radical state kinetics of locally applied MB and IR700 could then be monitored in a tissue sample. Finally, potassium iodide and ascorbate were added as possible PDT adjuvants, enhancing intersystem crossing and photoreduction, respectively, and their effects on the PDT precursor states of MB and IR700 could be locally monitored. Taken together, the presented procedure overcomes current methodological limitations and can offer feedback, guiding both excitation and PDT adjuvant application, and thereby more efficient and targeted PDT treatments.
