The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Bent Creek Experimental Forest (BEN) contains diameter at breast height of trees measurements in centimeter units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.

Data from: Patterns of tree mortality in a temperate deciduous forest derived from a large forest dynamics plot

Tree mortality is one of the most influential drivers of forest dynamics, and characterizing patterns of tree mortality is critical to understanding forest dynamics and ecosystem function in the present era of global change. Here, we use a unique data set of mortality in a temperate deciduous forest to characterize rates and drivers of mortality. At the 25.6-ha Center for Tropical Forest Science—Forest Global Earth Observatory forest dynamics plot at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (Virginia, USA), we conducted two full tree censuses in 2008 and 2013 and then tracked mortality over the next 2 years (2014 and 2015). Overall, the mortality rate, m, of stems ≥10 cm diameter was 1.3–2.1%/yr. Biomass mortality, M, was 1.9–3.4 Mg·ha−1·yr−1 at the stand level (0.6–1.1%/yr of biomass), less than biomass gains from growth and recruitment, resulting in net live biomass accumulation. Small stems died at the highest rate; however, contributions to M increased toward larger size classes. Most species had m < 2%/yr and M < 0.25 Mg·ha−1·yr−1 (<3%/yr of biomass), whereas two to four species had anomalously high mortality rates during each census period, accounting for 15–24% of m (n = 2, Cercis canadensis, Ulmus species) and 39–75% of M (n = 4 Quercus species). Stems that died, whether or not in association with mechanical damage, tended to grow more slowly in preceding years than surviving stems and, for certain shade-intolerant species, tended to be in neighborhoods with higher basal area. These findings show how relatively fine-scale mortality processes contribute to stand-level compositional change and carbon cycling. The mortality patterns reported here will provide a valuable basis for understanding future disturbance events within eastern deciduous forests and for comparing across forest types.

Tree abundance in eight 1-ha tropical forest plots in northeastern Costa Rica from 1997-2017

<p>In 1997, four 1-ha plots were established in secondary forests (12-25 yr since establishment on former pasture) in northeastern Costa Rica, in and around La Selva Research Station. In 2005, four additional plots were established, two in 10-yr old sites and two in old growth sites. The dataset contains information for 155,378 trees. Each year, from 1997-2017 all stems with a diameter of breast height ≥ 5 cm were censused in each site within 100 subplots of 10m x 10m. All but a few individuals were identified to species with confirmed identifications by local experts and vouchers. Life form for each species was also recorded as tree (reaching canopy), midtree (midstory tree), treelet (understory tree), shrub, liana, palm, or understory palm. The specimen-based data set contains data for all trees that were alive (not completely dead) and standing in each annual census, including notes on new recruits or damaged trees. Each tree individual is identified by a unique stem identifiation code and each entry has a unique specimen code. Each tree had a unique numbered tag, nailed into the stem. Locations of diameter measurements were painted on each tree to minimize annual variation and field technians had data from the prior year to confirm information for each tree. These were generally taken at 1.3 m height. In cases where a buttress or stilt root caused a stem irregularity, the measurement point was moved upwards beyond any stem irregularity. The diameter measurement for each specimen reflects each year's measurement point.</p>

Fine root biogenic silica in sugar maple trees (Acer saccharum) on soil freezing and control plots at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest

This dataset presents biogenic silica (BSi) concentrations in sugar maple (Acer saccharum) fine roots collected from a snow manipulation experiment at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (New Hampshire, USA). BSi data are reported as percent dry biomass. The samples were collected from control and treatment plots in April 2009, May 2009, and April through July 2010. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Abundance of trees and seedlings, climatic, and soil variables in 36 20x20 m permanent plots in peri-urban Andean forests of Colombia

<p>The study was conducted on the Eastern Andean Cordillera of Colombia, in remnant forests occurring in the high-plain where Bogotá lies, one of the largest cities in Latin America. The high-plain covers an area of about 185,000 ha at an average altitude of 2600 meters above sea level (m a.s.l.). We selected six study sites, distributed in the Eastern and Western slopes of the mountain range that surrounds the high-plain, which exhibit different climatic and edaphic characteristics. Five of the sites were located in the suburban municipalities of Soacha (So), San Francisco (Sf), Guasca (Gu), Tabio (Ta), and the last one, Torca (To), located in a large forest fragment at the periphery of Bogotá. Sites were selected so that they encompassed both early- and late-successional or old-growth forest patches. <br> Within each site, we established three 20 m x 20 m plots in early-successional forests (E) and three 20 m x 20 m plots in late-successional (L) for a total of 36 permanent plots. Here, we present climatic and soil variables for each plot and also the abundances of all tree, shrub, palm, and tree-fern individuals with DAH&gt; 5 cm included in each plot. For simplicity we refer to these as "trees" (-t). Within each plot, we additionally established four subplots of 2 m x 2 m, where we tagged and measured all seedlings&gt; 5 cm in height and DAH ≤ 1 cm; we also present the abundances of the seedlings (-s).</p> <p>Vouchers were collected for each tree and seedling species or morphospecies and identified with the help of an expert botanist and using the resources of the herbarium of the Bogotá Botanical Garden (JBB). Vouchers specimens were stored at the herbarium of the Alexander von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute (FMB). Overall, we recorded Vouchers that were not identified to species were assigned a standardized morphospecies and were all included in the analyzes.</p>

Transect and plot data from: Fruit trees drive small-scale movement of elephants in Kibale National Park, Uganda

<p>Understanding what motivates animal spatial behavior requires discerning the relationship between animals and the landscape in which they move. Many studies have focused on large scale trends that drive migrations and movement across broad landscapes, but few studies have focused on drivers of local movement within smaller areas based on fine–scale landscape heterogeneity. This is especially true for African elephants (Loxodonta africana), whose movements in relation to landscape variables have frequently been studied across vast areas, but infrequently on a small scale.  We report on how the local distribution of an important resource—fruit trees—shapes elephant movement patterns in Kibale National Park, Uganda. We hypothesized that the spatial location of elephant trails, and especially intersections in the network of trails, would be heavily associated with fruit trees, with trail density being higher in areas with greater fruit availability. Elephant trails and nearby fruit trees were mapped within a 64-km2 area within the interior of the Park. Trail and fruit tree sampling were conducted along sixteen evenly spaced one-km control transects and compared to 28.6 km of elephant trails arrayed throughout the park. Fruit tree basal area was higher along trails and at trail intersections. Trail density was also positively correlated with fruit tree density. Fruit trees may thus serve as a determinant of small-scale elephant movement and could be used to predict patterns of elephant spatial behavior across forested habitat, which has potential implications for elephant management in the area.  </p>

Plot level biomass by components for small black spruce trees growing on the wetlands of the Boreal and Taiga Plains of Canada

<p>Tree mensuration data and biomass component data, collected from destructive sampling of 679 trees (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.10632743), were scalled-up to the plot level, resulting in 58 black spruce boreal wetland plots within the Boreal Plains and Taiga Plains of Canada.&nbsp; This dataset contains plot level biomass by components for small black spruce trees growing on the wetlands of the Boreal and Taiga Plains of Canada.</p> <p>This&nbsp; dataset has been used to develop a new set of yield curves (i.e., total volume as a function of total stand age) as well as novel total volume-to-biomass conversion models to predict stem wood, stem bark, branch, and foliage biomass of the small black spruce trees.&nbsp;</p> <p>The novel equations are key to modelling treed peatlands in the Canadian Model for Peatlands (CaMP) and thus contribute to improving accuracy in modelled C stocks and flux estimates for Canada&rsquo;s treed peatlands.</p>

Macrosystems Gentry Tree Sampling Plot Latitude, Longitude, and Elevation for HJA, HFR, BCI, CWT, LUQ, and NWT

Patterns of biodiversity, such as the increase toward the tropics and the peaked curve during ecological succession, are fundamental phenomena for ecology. Such patterns have multiple, interacting causes, but temperature emerges as a dominant factor across organisms from microbes to trees and mammals, and across terrestrial, marine, and freshwater environments. However, there is little consensus on the underlying mechanisms, even as global temperatures increase and the need to predict their effects becomes more pressing. The purpose of this project is to generate and test theory for how temperature impacts biodiversity through its effect on biochemical processes and metabolic rate. A combination of standardized surveys in the field and controlled experiments in the field and laboratory measure diversity of three taxa -- trees, invertebrates, and microbes -- and key biogeochemical processes of decomposition in seven forests distributed along a geographic gradient of increasing temperature from cold temperate to warm tropical. This dataset contains the latitudes, longitudes, and elevations of the five Gentry subplots set up for measuring tree growth at each experimental site. These plots were installed by the Enquist Lab and the University of Arizona as part of this macrosystems biodiversity and latitude project supported by the National Science Foundation under Cooperative Agreement DEB#1065836.
