Transfer of bacteriophages between the fingers of volunteers and water or saliva

Campaing data obtained from the Micro Volunteering Engine
<p><span>This database supports the task allocation solution for a Spatial Crowdsourcing problem within the context of the Socio-Bee project. The goal is to resolve the task allocation challenge in a scenario where participation is altruistic, without economic incentives. Instead, recommendations are tailored to users based on their routines and past involvement, encouraging ease of participation by making tasks adaptive to their availability and location.</span></p> <p><span>The database is designed as part of the second pilot of the Socio-Bee project, a Citizen Science initiative aimed at promoting public involvement in air quality monitoring. In this project, users (citizen scientists) perform air quality measurements to create a spatially distributed data map, enhancing our understanding of environmental conditions across specific areas.</span></p> <p><span>For further details on the algorithmic design and implementation of the recommendation system, please refer to the project repository at <a href="https://github.com/mpuerta004/RecommenderSystem" target="_new">GitHub - RecommenderSystem</a>.</span></p>
Multi-echo resting-state fMRI networks of healthy volunteers

Volunteers in Public Service Production: Modeling the Contributions of Volunteers to Organizational Performance
<p>Volunteer use is an alternative service delivery arrangement in which public organizations directly involve volunteers in service production through a quasi-employment relationship. However, research evaluating the contributions of volunteer labor to organizational performance is relatively few. This article fills this gap by drawing from two theoretical insights. First, we test a linear model based on the traditional human resource management approach of interchangeability in which volunteers constitute a one-on-one substitute for paid employees. Second, we draw insight from critical mass theory to test a nonlinear model based on the assumption that the productivity of one volunteer may not be equal to that of one paid employee due to the systematic limitations of volunteer labor. Analyzing a large-N panel dataset of law enforcement agencies in the United States that utilize sworn volunteers with general arrest powers, the findings indicate that an increase in the number of sworn volunteers has a linear negative effect on clearing violent crimes in sheriffs' offices. However, we also find some evidence that volunteer use displays curvilinear effects on clearing violent crimes in police departments. This article suggests the need to account for the systematic limitations of volunteer labor when measuring performance and to explore multiple indicators. This study contributes to theory building and testing by enabling a two-way understanding of the relationship between volunteer involvement and organizational performance in the public sector.</p>
Co-design of a citizen science study: unlocking the potential of eDNA for volunteer freshwater monitoring
<ol> <li>Citizen science is increasingly being promoted as a means of gathering more data to help inform the management of ecosystems. Involving the participants in the design of data collection activities is a form of co-design often proposed by those calling for a translational ecology.</li> <li>In addition, novel monitoring approaches have the potential to improve the quality of data collected by citizen scientists. We explored the potential of environmental DNA (eDNA) for vertebrate (mainly fish) species monitoring through a co-designed catchment monitoring strategy. </li> <li>Having been introduced to the potential of eDNA, citizen scientists designed and executed an eDNA-based survey of a small chalk stream catchment to explore questions of concern.</li> <li>The eDNA monitoring approach provided data about fish and other vertebrate diversity in the catchment which would have otherwise required sampling approaches difficult for citizen scientists. These data give a preliminary answer to some of the citizen scientists' priority questions and are comparable to fish data collected through traditional electrofishing surveys.</li> <li>Recommendations are offered for co-design and the use of novel research techniques by citizen scientists.</li> </ol>
Brain cortical volume and area from Freesurfer's parcellation in a sample of healthy volunteers from South America
<p>This dataset aims to deepen the analysis of cortical gyral and sulcal asymmetry of the entire cerebral cortex of healthy adult individuals by quantifying the gray matter content of the right and left hemispheres in a reference sample from South America. The subjects were sampled from populations scarcely represented in MRI research, which tends to be biased towards groups of European ancestry from Europe and North America. In contrast, the population under study is an admixture of Native American, European, and African components that contributed to a variable extent to their gene pool. Consequently, this study will add to expanding the diversity in brain morphometric data and the construction of more population-representative references.</p>
