Water, energy and carbon fluxes and ancillary meteorological and remote sensing measurements at Encanto Golf Course, Phoenix, Arizona during 2019-2020

<p>Water, energy and carbon fluxes as wells as ancillary meteorological and NDVI measurements from the Encanto Park Golf Course in Phoenix, AZ. Measurements were done from March 2019 to March 2020.</p> <p>The database includes three files:</p> <ul> <li>Encanto_AZMET.xlsx, that include hourly values and daily average meteorological variables (T<sub>air</sub>, RH, VPD, R<sub>s</sub>, T<sub>soil</sub>, etc.) obtained from the Phoenix Encanto meteorological station of The Arizona Meteorological Network (AZMET). Please refer to https://cals.arizona.edu/AZMET/15.htm and the spreadsheet ReadMe within the excel file for additional information.</li> <li>Encanto_EddyCovariance.xlsx includes the half-hour water, energy and carbon fluxes obtained using an eddy covariance (EC) system. The file also includes half-hour ancillary meteorological and soil measurements obtained from the EC tower. Water, energy and carbon fluxes were processed using the software EddyPro 7.0. For more information, please refer to Vivoni <em>et al</em> (2020). Note: This new version includes Eddy Covariance and Met data up to July, 2020.</li> <li>Encanto_NDVI.xlsx includes the average NDVI for the net radiometer footprint installed in the EC tower. NDVI was obtained from 4-band PlanetScope scene images obtained from Planet website (www.planet.com). Meta-analysis data for Microcystin as a Biogeochemical Cycle: pools, fluxes, and fates of the cyanotoxin in inland waters

We constructed a conceptual biogeochemical model for microcystin through a comprehensive literature synthesis, identifying four major pools and nine major fluxes in lakes that also connect to the terrestrial environment. We also performed a literature synthesis, collating measurements of various pools and fluxes of microcystin in inland waters from the literature. A subset of those values were used in an analysis of microcystin detection for field surveys of waterbodies and a random effects model to estimate the mean and 95% confidence interval for various microcystin pools and fluxes in lakes.

Evaluating water and energy fluxes across three distinct land cover types in a desert urban environment

Urbanization impacts surface energy and water balances across multiple spatial and temporal scales, which can be particularly important in desert cities where resources are limited. Urban climate observations are limited, especially over a variety of locations that represent urban land cover. To help address the lack of observations over different urban land cover types, a mobile eddy covariance tower (ECT) was deployed at three different locations in the Phoenix metropolitan area, representing a xeric landscape (drip irrigated palo verde trees with gravel), a parking lot, and a mesic landscape (sprinkler irrigated turf grass). In this project, data obtained from the mobile ECT deployments will be coupled with data from an eddy covariance tower managed by CAP LTER in the Maryvale suburb of Phoenix, Arizona. Data is processed to obtain energy and water fluxes, which are controlled by land surface characteristics, over the four distinct land cover types.

SAFARI 2000 Kalahari Transect CO2, Water Vapor, and Heat Flux, Wet Season 2000

Short-term measurements of carbon dioxide, water, and energy fluxes were collected at four locations along a mean annual precipitation gradient in southern Africa during the SAFARI 2000 wet (growing) season campaign of 2000. The purpose of this research was to determine how observed vegetation-atmosphere exchange properties are functionally related to long-term climatic conditions. This research was conducted along the Kalahari Transect (KT), one in the global set of International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) transects, which covers a north-south aridity gradient, all on a homogenous sand formation. Eddy covariance instruments were deployed on a permanent tower in Mongu, Zambia (879 mm of rainfall per year), as well as on a portable tower in Maun (460 mm/yr), Okwa River Crossing (407 mm/yr), and Tshane (365 mm/yr), Botswana for several days at each site.The data files are stored as ASCII text files, one file per site, in comma-separated-value (csv) format, with column headers. Each file contains measurements of the following parameters: air temperature; CO2 concentration; CO2 flux; friction velocity; heat flux; infrared surface skin temperature; longwave radiation; net radiation; photosynthetic photon flux density; photosynthesis energy; relative humidity; shortwave radiation; soil moisture; soil temperature; vapor pressure deficit; wind speed and angle; water use efficiency; and water vapor. BOREAS RSS-08 BIOME-BGC SSA Simulations of Annual Water and Carbon Fluxes

The BOREAS RSS-08 team performed research to evaluate the effect of seasonal weather and landcover heterogeneity on boreal forest regional water and carbon fluxes using a process level ecosystem model, BIOME-BGC, coupled with remote sensing-derived parameter maps of key state variables. This data set contains derived maps of landcover type and crown and stem biomass as model inputs to determine annual evapotranspiration, gross primary production, autotrophic respiration and net primary productivity within the BOREAS SSA-MSA, at a 30 m spatial resolution. Model runs were conducted over a 3 year period from 1994-1996, images are provided for each of those years.

SAFARI 2000 MODIS Water and Heat Fluxes, Maun, Botswana, Dry Season 2001

A physically-based model, Energy: Surface Towards Atmosphere (ESTA), was used to model and map the energy and water balances of a heterogeneous land surface in a savanna environment on the southern fringe of the Okavango Delta, near Maun, Botswana. ESTA is governed by remotely sensed values of surface temperature, reflection, and vegetation density.Surface reflectance data from the MODIS sensor aboard the Terra satellite were obtained for the Okavango Delta region for September of 2001. Use was made of the visible, near infrared, and thermal bands of MOD09, a configuration that allows discrimination of broad-band surface albedo, vegetation indices, and surface temperature. A crude land cover classification image was created to provide vegetation canopy heights for the estimation of aerodynamic resistance. The original spatial resolution of the visible and near infrared imagery of 250 and 500 meters, respectively, was reduced to 1 km to be compatible with the resolution of the thermal imagery. Input to the model also includes near-surface meteorological observations from the Maun flux tower.Net radiometer data from the Maun station were used for crude atmospheric corrections and for validating net radiation estimates. Soil heat flux plates, also in place at the tower site, in combination with an eddy-correlation system, were used to validate the model output for soil and turbulent heat fluxes. This data set consists of 3 separate gridded binary image files representing daily evapotranspiration (mm/day) for the Okavango Delta region for September 2, September 13, and September 29, 2001.

Net Carbon Dioxide and Water Fluxes of Global Terrestrial Ecosystems, 1969-1998

The variability of net surface carbon assimilation (Asmax), net ecosystem surface respiration (Rsmax), and net surface evapotranspiration (Etsmax) among and within vegetation types was examined based on a review of studies performed in either a micrometeorological setting or an enclosure setting. The majority of studies involved forests and C3 crops, particularly in the northern hemisphere; however, studies on tropical forests, C4 grasslands or wetlands were included. Data are presented for 133 published studies, although individual studies may not have measure all variables of interest.Despite large variations within a vegetation type, enclosure studies tended to give highest Asmax rates compared to micrometeorological techniques (Buchmann and Schulze 1999). Excluding enclosure studies, the investigators tested the effect of stand age and leaf area index (LAI) on net ecosystem gas exchange. The results from these analyses illustrate where gaps in scientific knowledge exist and how ecosystem properties affect the capacity of net ecosystem gas exchange.The information was collected from papers with publication dates from 1969-1998. Mean maximum flux rates for the period chosen by the authors were used instead of absolute maximum values for flux rates. Positive values stand for CO2 uptake by the vegetation and negative values represent CO2 release from the ecosystem. More information about the compilation can be found in Buchmann and Schultze (1999) or the individual studies cited in the data table.
