White Spruce Seedling Counts at Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest Vegetation Plots (4-sq meters)
This study is a survey of the spruce seedlings of 24 LTER sites in Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest. The 24 sites are divided into three replicates for six primary successional stages onthe floodplains (3 replicates X 5 successional stages = 15 sites) and three replicates for three secondary sucessional stages in the uplands (3 replicates X 3 successional stages = 9 sites). White spruce seedlings were surveyed on some sites as early as 1975 and every 1-2 years from the 1980's through 2004. Seedlings are currently surveyed as part of the <a href="http://www.lter.uaf.edu/data_detail.cfm?datafile_pkey=530"> Shrub, Seedling and Sapling Density at Bonanza Creek LTER Research Sites (2006-Present) </a> data package.
White Spruce Seedling Demography and Browsing by Snowshoe Hares Inside and Outside the Moose-spruce Exclosures located along the Tanana River
This study started in September 2002 focused on the indirect effect of moose browsing on white spruce regeneration on the Tanana River floodplain. Twelve exclosures (7m X 10m, 2m high), with adjacent control plots of the same size, were constructed using chain-link fence panels. Exclosures were located along the Tanana River between FP 1A and FP 1C and instrumented with Hobo Microstations for monitoring of soil and air temperature, relative humidity, and PAR. Browsing effects on deciduous vegetation (biomass removal and canopy height) and soil properties were analyzed in relation to the performance (germination, growth and biochemistry) of planted white spruce seeds and seedlings (n=98/exclosure). Additionally, direct browsing by snowshoe hares on spruce seedlings (growth and survival) was evaluated in relation to canopy cover and terrace age. The study is ongoing. White spruce seedling height, basal diameter, browsing history, and survival were measured inside and outside the ten remaining paired exclosure and control plots located along the Tanana River floodplain in the summer of 2014.

This data set is derived from BNZ LTER inventory plots. Stand density and basal area are listed by diameter size class of live white spruce trees for each replicate stand within mid-successional and mature white spruce stands within both floodplain and upland landscapes by year from 1989-2008.

This data set is derived from BNZ LTER inventory plots, where DBH of all trees is measured every 3 to 4 years, and increment changes in AG biomass are derived from allometric equations. Data included in this file were obtained from 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004 and 2008 inventories, generating 4 growth increments between 1997 and 2008. Data are reported by age cohort, and include NPP increments (averaged across all trees within each landscape and successional stage) for all trees of known age (determined from coring).

White Spruce NPP per tree calculated from dendrometer bands annually from 1994 to 2008
This data set is derived from BNZ LTER inventory plots, where band dendrometers are in place on trees within each diameter size class (typically 10 trees per 10 cm increment diameter size class). Dendrometer bands are read in the fall each year. Biomass is calculated from allometric equations, from which annual biomass increments are derived. Data are reported as the average annual growth per tree across all trees within a given landscape and successional stage and reported as kg biomass/tree/year.

Herbivores have the capacity to modify plant community composition and ecosystem structure and function via browsing. For example, moose and snowshoe hare facilitate succession in Alaska's boreal forest by preferentially browsing early successional species over late successional conifers. Snowshoe hares also eat conifers, including white spruce, and this browsing may affect the pattern of spruce establishment over time. We measured over 800 spruce at 18 locations along the Tanana River floodplain in interior Alaska, USA and demonstrated that the proportion of spruce browsed annually positively correlates with annual hare abundance.

Because multiple factors interact to influence browsing of spruce, including the hare cycle, snow depth and the characteristics of surrounding vegetation, we collected an array of site variables relevant to spruce-hare interactions in Denali National Park, Alaska. Site variables collected included elevation, landscape position, vegetative cover, and the density of white spruce seedlings, saplings and trees.

Watersheds 1 and 17 white pine survey in 2001
This study involves the resampling of 40 0.2 acre plots throughout the two 35 year old white pine stands to determine the changes in stand structure over time (other survey dates include 1967, 1969, 1972, 1984, and 1989). Live and dead stems of each tree in a plot were measured (diameter at breast height, DBH). In addition, due to the recent infestations in both watersheds by the southern pine bark beetle, current status of trees was also noted.
