Figure 8. Southwestern Cyllopsis pyracmon and three other Cyllopsis species. C. pyracmon has two forms, a in A salticid archetype for salticid spiders

Figure 8. Southwestern Cyllopsis pyracmon and three other Cyllopsis species. C. pyracmon has two forms, a darker spring form (1-2) and a lighter fall form (3-6), although some individuals may be intermediate. The tropical species shown here (7, 9) have a less pronounced salticid image on each hindwing, but retain the large eyes. Along with Neonympha (Figure 9), these are members of a very large, mostly Neotropical, clade of butterflies with ocelli on the margins of the wings (Euptychiina; MarÍNn et al. 2019). X-ray diffraction data of twinned gamma-form of o-nitroaniline

<p>The diffraction data are of the gamma-form of o-Nitroaniline, C6H6N2O3. This compound is known to be polymorphic; the alpha-form is probably amorphous, while the beta- and gamma-forms are crystalline. Difficulties with the unit-cell determination of the gamma-form were reported as a consequence of twinning. These newly recorded diffraction data are of a twinned crystal.</p> <p>The raw data and processing with EVAL are described in details in IUCrData as a Raw Data Letter [Lutz &amp; Kroon-Batenburg, IUCrData (2022].</p> <p>The data were recorded on a Bruker ApexII diffractometer and stored as .sfrm files. They were also converted with Bruker imagesum.py script as part of the APEXII software to full .cbf files.</p>

Cyanobacterial- and moss-forming biocrusts consistently mitigate the temperature sensitivity of microbial respiration along a continental precipitation gradient

<p>1. Biocrusts are prevalent and participate in many soil organic carbon (C) processes in drylands. The predicted increase in aridity will expand the biocrust cover and significantly impact soil organic C dynamics. However, how biocrusts change soil organic C decomposition and what factors drive the effect in response to climate warming remains largely unknown at a continental scale.</p> <p>2. We measured microbial respiration and its temperature sensitivity (Q10) in bare soil lacking biocrusts and two universal biocrusted soils (cyanobacterial- and moss-crusted soil) from 43 sites across a precipitation gradient from 39 mm to 443 mm to evaluate the relative effects of biocrusts on Q10 and the driving forces in northern China's dryland.</p> <p>3. Microbial respiration increased and Q10 decreased with increasing precipitation in bare soil, cyanobacterial- and moss-crusted soil. Biocrusts positively affected microbial respiration, with a more substantial magnitude by moss crusts than cyanobacterial crusts. Biocrusts negatively impacted Q10, and the magnitudes were similar between moss and cyanobacterial crusts. Most importantly, the relative effects of biocrusts on microbial respiration and Q10 increased with decreasing precipitation.</p> <p>4. The positive effects of biocrusts on soil organic C content and microbial biomass carbon were positively correlated with the level of increased microbial respiration. Contrastingly, the magnitude of reduced Q10 was attributed to the biocrusts' positive effects on soil organic C quality and adverse effects on the ratio of fungal to bacterial PLFAs (F: B).</p> <p>5. Our study provides strong evidence that biocrusts decrease the temperature sensitivity of microbial respiration in northern China's dryland. This result suggests that the predicted expanding biocrust cover is crucial for maintaining the soil organic C stability by buffering the positive impacts of climate warming on soil organic C decomposition in drylands.</p>

A heterogenous mantle and crustal structure formed during the early differentiation of Mars

<p>Highly siderophile element abundances and Os isotopes of nakhlite and chassignite meteorites demonstrate that they represent a comagmatic suite from Mars. Nakhlites experienced variable assimilation of &gt;2 Ga altered high Re/Os basaltic crust. This basaltic crust is distinct from the ancient crust represented by meteorites Allan Hills 84001, or impact-contaminated Northwest Africa 7034/7533. Nakhlites and chassignites that did not experience crustal assimilation were extracted from a depleted lithospheric mantle distinct from the deep plume source of depleted shergottites. The comagmatic origin for nakhlites and chassignites demonstrates a layered martian interior comprising ancient enriched basaltic crust derived from trace element-rich shallow magma ocean cumulates, a variably metasomatized mantle lithosphere, and a trace element-depleted deep mantle sampled by plume magmatism.</p>

Data from: Beyond the colony-forming-unit: Rapid bacterial evaluation in Osteomyelitis

<p>Examination of bacteria/host cell interactions is important for understanding the aetiology of many infectious diseases. The colony-forming-unit (CFU) has been the standard for quantifying bacterial burden for the past century, however, this suffers from low sensitivity and is dependent on bacterial culturability in vitro. Our data demonstrate the discrepancy between the CFU and bacterial genome copy number in an osteomyelitis-relevant co-culture system and we confirm diagnosis and quantify bacterial load in clinical bone specimens. This study provides insight into improving the quantification of bacterial burden in such cases.</p>

Universities and Unicorns – New Forms of Value in Digital Higher Education (SRHE webinar)

<p>SRHE's Digital University Network organised an event on 21 September 2023. The research team from the ESRC-funded research project Universities and Unicorns (UU) project presented initial findings after the project finished. The project introduced fundamentally new ways to think about and examine the digitalising of the higher education sector. It investigated new forms of value creation and suggested that value in the sector increasingly lies in the creation of digital assets. Further, the project examined whether and how universities, companies and investors shift from forms of entrepreneurship to forms of rentiership. This has important consequences. Assetisation and rentiership imply a change from creating value via market exchange to capturing value via the ownership and control of assets, such as personal data.</p> <p><br>More about the webinar: https://srhe.ac.uk/civicrm/?civiwp=CiviCRM&amp;q=civicrm%2Fevent%2Finfo&amp;reset=1&amp;id=641</p>
