Dataset on: Incidence and geographical distribution of cereal cyst nematode (CCN, Heterodera spp.) in winter wheat fields in Algeria

<p>Cereal cyst nematodes (CCN, <em>Heterodera</em> spp.) are the most damaging plant-parasitic nematode species on wheat, causing severe economic loss in global wheat production. In summer 2015, we analyzed samples collected from 22 wheat fields in Algeria using the Fenwick can technique. The study revealed that 54.55 % of wheat fields were infested with cereal cyst nematodes. The species was observed in several locations in the northern part of Algeria but not in the southern desert area. Population densities of CCNs in soil varied between the regions at an infestation rate of between 0.6 &plusmn; 0.54 and 86.6 &plusmn; 19.96 cysts per 500 g of dried soil. Furthermore, we found an average of 56.33&plusmn;15.18 and 364.70 &plusmn; 81.93 second-stage juveniles and eggs/cyst. The infestation was most severe in cereal fields in Draa Semar and Djendel with 86.6 &plusmn; 19.96 cyst/500g of soil and 57.4&plusmn;17.55 cysts/500g of soil, respectively. Infestation was lowest in fields in Ras Elouad, Sidi Mbarek and Sedraia with 0.6 &plusmn; 0.54 cysts/500g of soil; 1.6 &plusmn; 1.67 cysts/500g of soil and 2.4 &plusmn; 1.67 cysts/500g of soil, respectively. <em>Heterodera</em> spp. was distributed throughout the cereal growing province in Algeria and could cause economic loss in these regions.</p>

Data from: Incidence and risk factors of first-line antiretroviral treatment failure among human immunodeficiency virus-infected children in Amhara regional state, Ethiopia: a retrospective follow-up study

Objective: This study aimed to assess the incidence and risk factors of treatment failure among Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome infected (AIDS) children who were on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) in Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia. Methods: A retrospective follow-up study was conducted from January 2010 to March 2016. A total of 824 children under the age of 15 years who had started ART were included in the study. Data were collected from children's medical chart and ART registration logbook using a standard checklist. A Weibull regression model was used to identify the risk factors for treatment failure. Adjusted Hazard Ratios with 95% confidence intervals were used to declare statistical significance. Results: The mean (±SD) age of the children was 6.4 ± 3.6 years with a median (IQR) follow up of 30.5 (IQR: 14.6, 51.4) months. Sixty-three children (7.7%, 95%CI:5.8, 9.5) developed treatment failure. Seventeen (27.0%) of whom were immunological and 46 (73.0 %) clinical failures. The incidence rate of treatment failure was 22.1/10000 person-months. The cumulative probability of failure was 0.4 with 28562.5 person-month observations. Lack of disclosure [AHR=4. 4, 95%CI (1.8, 11.3)], opportunistic infections during initiation of ART [AHR= 2.3, 95% CI (1.3, 4.1)] and prolonged follow up [AHR = 0.06, 95% CI (0.02, 0.18)] were the main predictors of treatment failure. Conclusion: This study revealed that the incidence of treatment failure remains a significant public health concern in Ethiopia. Undisclosed HIV status to children, the presence of opportunistic infections during initiation of ART and prolonged follow up was found to be the main predictors of treatment failure. Hence, early detection of the treatment failures and further studies on viral monitor need to consider.

Supplemental material: Time trends in incidence, comorbidity, and mortality of ischemic stroke in Denmark, 1996-2016

<p><i>Objective:</i> To examine whether the incidence, comorbidity, and mortality of first-time ischemic stroke changed in Denmark between 1996-2016 overall and according to age and sex using a nationwide cohort design.</p> <p><i>Methods: </i>In this cohort study, 224,617 individuals <u>&gt;</u>18 years admitted with first-time ischemic stroke between 1996-2016 were identified using Danish nationwide registries. We calculated annual age-standardized incidence rates and absolute 30-day and 1-year mortality risks. Further, we calculated annual incidence rate ratios using Poisson regression, odds ratios for 30-day mortality using logistic regression, and hazard ratios for 1-year mortality using Cox regression.</p> <p><i>Results</i><b>:</b> The overall age-standardized incidence rates of ischemic stroke per 1,000 person-years increased from 1996 (2.70 [95%CI,2.65-2.76]) to 2002 (3.25 [95%CI,3.20-3.31]) and then gradually decreased to below the initial level until 2016 (1.99 [95%CI,1.95-2.02]). Men had higher incidence rates than women in all age groups except 18-34 and <u>&gt;</u>85 years. Absolute mortality risk decreased between 1996-2016 (30-day mortality from 17.1% to 7.6% and 1-year mortality from 30.9% to 17.3%). Women between 55-64 and <u>&gt;</u>85 years had higher mortality than men. Similar trends were observed for all analyses after multivariable adjustment. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and use of lipid-lowering medication increased during the study period.</p> <p><i>Conclusions:</i> <a name="_Hlk36885003">The age-standardized incidence of first-time hospitalization for ischemic stroke increased from 1996-2002 and then gradually decreased to below the initial level until 2016. </a>Absolute 30-day and 1-year mortality risks decreased between 1996-2016. <a name="_Hlk36741776">These findings correspond to increased stroke prevention awareness and introduction of new treatments during the study period.</a></p>

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, sleep behaviors, and incident type 2 diabetes

<p><span>Objectives: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with incident type 2 diabetes; however, the extent to which NAFLD may confer its risk remains uncertain, especially in Europeans. Emerging evidence suggests that sleep behaviors are linked to NAFLD and diabetes. We aimed to measure whether sleep behaviors modified the association between NAFLD and incident type 2 diabetes.</span></p> <p><span>Methods: This prospective cohort study included 362,834 participants without type 2 diabetes at baseline in UK Biobank data. Five sleep behaviors, including sleep duration, insomnia, snoring, chronotype, and daytime sleepiness, were collected from the questionnaire. Liver steatosis was based on the fatty liver index.</span></p> <p><span>Results: During a median follow-up of 10.9 years, we documented 7,394 patients with incident type 2 diabetes. NAFLD was significantly associated with increased diabetes risk. Sleeping 7-8 h/day, no insomnia, no self-reported snoring and no frequent daytime sleepiness were independently associated with incident type 2 diabetes, with a 19%, 19%, 13%, and 29% lower risk, respectively. 33.8% and 33.5% of type 2 diabetes events in this cohort could be attributed to NAFLD and poor sleep pattern, respectively. We further found significant interaction between NAFLD and sleep duration and insomnia (<i>P</i> for interaction = 0.027 and 0.025, respectively). Compared those with NAFLD and abnormal sleep duration (≤6 h or ≥9 h) or insomnia, participants with non-NAFLD and normal sleep duration or non-insomnia had 57% (RR 0.43, 95% CI 0.40, 0.47) or 55% (RR 0.45, 95% CI 0.41, 0.50) lower risk of incident diabetes. These associations were independent of age, sex, ethnicity, education, family history, economic status, lifestyles, hemoglobin A1c, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and associated medications.</span></p> <p><span>Conclusion: Both NAFLD and some sleep behaviors were risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Insomnia and sleep duration modified the association between NAFLD and type 2 diabetes.</span></p>

The incidence and prevalence of drug resistant epilepsy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

<p><strong>Objective:</strong> In order to evaluate the incidence and prevalence of drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) as well as its predictors and correlates, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>Our protocol was registered with PROSPERO and the PRISMA and MOOSE reporting standards were followed. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science. We used a double arcsine transformation and random-effects models to carry out our meta-analyses. We performed random-effects meta-regressions using study-level data.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> Our search strategy identified 10,794 abstracts. Of these, 103 articles met our eligibility criteria. There was high inter-study heterogeneity and risk of bias. The cumulative incidence of DRE was 25.0 % (95% CI: 16.8, 34.3) in child studies but 14.6% (95% CI: 8.8, 21.6) in adult/mixed ages studies. The prevalence of DRE was 13.7% (95% CI: 9.2, 19.0) in population/community-based populations but 36.3% (95% CI: 30.4, 42.4) in clinic-based cohorts. Meta-regression confirmed that the prevalence of DRE was higher in clinic-based populations and in focal epilepsy. Multiple predictors and correlates of DRE were identified. The most reported of these were having a neurological deficit, an abnormal EEG, and symptomatic epilepsy. The most reported genetic predictors of DRE were polymorphisms of the ABCB1 gene.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Our observations provide a basis for estimating the incidence and prevalence of DRE, which vary between populations. We identified numerous putative DRE predictors and correlates. These findings are important to plan epilepsy services, including epilepsy surgery, a crucial treatment option for people with disabling seizures and DRE.</p>
