Data from: Slow oscillation-spindle coupling predicts enhanced memory formation from childhood to adolescence

Precise temporal coordination of slow oscillations (SO) and sleep spindles is a fundamental mechanism of sleep-dependent memory consolidation. SO and spindle morphology changes considerably throughout development. Critically, it remains unknown how the precise temporal coordination of these two sleep oscillations develops during brain maturation and whether their synchronization indexes the development of memory networks. Here, we use a longitudinal study design spanning from childhood to adolescence, where participants underwent polysomnography and performed a declarative word-pair learning task. Performance on the memory task was better during adolescence. After disentangling oscillatory components from 1/f activity, we found frequency shifts within SO and spindle frequency bands. Consequently, we devised an individualized cross-frequency coupling approach, which demonstrates that SO-spindle coupling strength increases during maturation. Critically, this increase indicated enhanced memory formation from childhood to adolescence. Our results provide evidence that improved coordination between SOs and spindles indexes the development of sleep-dependent memory networks.

Prevalence and correlates of overweight and obesity among adolescents in northeastern China: a cross-sectional study

<p>Abstract Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of overweight/obesity among adolescents and to evaluate the associated factors in this group in Changchun City, northeastern China.</p> <p>Methods: A cross-sectional study of 1955 adolescents aged 11–18 years was conducted in Changchun City, using stratified cluster sampling. Parents and caregivers of children completed the questionnaires as requested without objection; the questionnaire included demographic characteristics and anthropometric parameters. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to analyze the relationship between overweight /obesity and related factors.</p> <p>Results: In total, the prevalence of overweight was 12.7% (male 17.4%; female 10.1%), and the prevalence of obesity was 4.9% (male 8.8%; female 3.1%) in Changchun, Jilin Province. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was higher in males than that in females (P &lt;0.001). Multivariate logistic regression showed that overweight and obesity were significantly associated with male sex (OR=1.91, 95% CI: 1.48-2.47), eating fresh fruits more than two days per week (OR=1.41, 95% CI: 1.09-1.84), eating quickly (OR=1.37, 95% CI: 1.06-1.78). The students who were not picky (OR=0.69, 95% CI: 0.53-0.90) were less likely to be overweight. And adolescents whose father were overweight or obese (OR=0.67, 95% CI: 0.52-0.86) or mother were overweight or obese (OR=0.72, 95% CI: 0.52-0.99) were less likely to be overweight.</p> <p>Conclusion: The prevalence of overweight and obesity among adolescents in Changchun was high in recent years. The prevalence of overweight and obesity among males was higher than that among females. Sex, dietary habits (weekly frequency of fruit consumption, picky eating and slowness in eating) and parental weight were important factors for overweight and obesity in adolescents. Further research should be conducted on the health of adolescents in China and further intervention measures should be implemented to reduce the prevalence of overweight/obesity.</p>

Comparing three screen-based sedentary behaviours' effect upon adolescents' participation in physical activity: The ESSENS study

<p class="Arthurstyle1">Background: Literature focusing on the association between sedentary behaviours and physical activity has provided equivocal results and has been dominated by TV viewing as the indicator of sedentary behaviour. There is a need for more studies exploring the association between contemporary screen activities and physical activity among youth.</p> <p class="Arthurstyle1">Methods: A cross-sectional study including 742 adolescents was conducted in 2016. Data were collected at school through an online questionnaire. Regression analyses were used to explore the association between different screen-based sedentary behaviours and participation in physical activity.</p> <p class="Arthurstyle1">Results: The results showed that those with lower (vs higher) time spent on TV/movie streaming and electronic game playing both on weekdays and weekend days had significantly higher odds of participating in physical activity. There were no significant associations between socializing/surfing online both on weekdays and weekend days and physical activity in adjusted models.</p> <p class="Arthurstyle1">Conclusions: TV/movie streaming and electronic game playing during both weekdays and weekend days were significantly inversely related with participating in physical activity. Initiatives aimed at reducing screen-based sedentary activities might result in favourable effects on physical activity levels among adolescents.</p>

Samples from 23 out of 30 girls with PCOS (OC, N= 11; SPIOMET, N= 12) were available for analysis post-treatment. Correlations between bacterial results and endocrine-metabolic variables were performed before and after randomized treatments. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p class="Paragraph"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Results:</b> Girls with PCOS had decreased diversity alpha, altered microbiota pattern and taxonomic profile with more abundance of <i>Family XI</i> (<i>P</i>= 0.002), and less abundance of family <i>Prevotellaceae</i> (<i>P</i>= 0.0006) and the genus <i>Prevotella</i> (<i>P</i>= 0.0001) and <i>Senegalimassilia</i> (<i>P</i>&lt; 0.0001), as compared to controls. <i>Family XI</i>abundance related positively to hepato-visceral fat (R= 0.453; <i>P</i>= 0.0003). SPIOMET treatment, but not OC, normalized the abundance of <i>Family XI</i>. <i>Prevotellaceae</i>, <i>Prevotella</i> and <i>Senegalimassilia</i> abundance remained unchanged after either treatment. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p class="Paragraph"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Conclusion:</b> SPIOMET's spectrum of normalizing effects in non-obese girls with PCOS is herewith broadened as to include <i>Family XI</i> abundance in gut microbiota. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
