SAFRAN Present Forcing (Historical: 2004/2014) and Future projections (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5: 2041/2060).

<p>SAFRAN forcing refers to a set of meteorological data used to model the climate, covering both historical periods (2004-2014) and future projections under two greenhouse gas concentration scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) for the period 2041-2060. Each dataset includes key parameters for climate analysis: cloud cover (NB), humidity (QA), direct radiation (RD), infrared radiation (RI), precipitation (RR), visible radiation (RV), snow cover (SS), temperature (TA), and wind strength (UA). These parameters are measured on a grid with variable resolution, ranging from 8 km in plains to 1 km in mountains and irrigated agricultural lands. This data is essential for understanding current and future atmospheric dynamics in the context of climate change.</p>

Deliverable 1.1.1.1 BEL-Float project | Dataset containing the results of numerical simulations (motions, forces) of the operational performance analysis - Part 9: Operational and damaged scenarios in regular waves

<p>This dataset contains the results of OpenFAST simulations performed on the DeepCwind OC4 semi-submersible combined with the 5MW NREL turbine for various wind and wave conditions. The basis of the OpenFAST input files are taken from&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/OpenFAST/r-test/tree/main/glue-codes/openfast/5MW_OC4Semi_WSt_WavesWN">OpenFAST r-test GitHub repository (5MW_OC4Semi_WSt_WavesWN)</a>&nbsp;and adapted to simulate various wind and wave conditions. The turbulent wind field as the input to the InflowWind module is generated using&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nrel.gov/wind/nwtc/turbsim.html">TurbSim</a>. The simulations are performed on a modified version of OpenFAST v3.5.3 to which adaptation to the code is made to extract additional Morison drag output up to 16 cylindrical members. This adapted code is&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/abkpribadi/openfast/tree/Morison_additional_output">uploaded on GitHub as a branch from a forked OpenFAST repository</a>. In total there are 1152 simulation results consists of 768 irregular waves and 384 regular waves cases. The complete dataset is divided into 9 sub-datasets to which this is part number 9. A report describing this dataset is available on the BEL-Float project website: https://www.owi-lab.be/bel-float.</p>

Data from: Protocol dependence and state variables in the force-moment ensemble

Stress-based ensembles incorporating temperature-like variables have been proposed as a route to an equation of state for granular materials. To test the efficacy of this approach, we perform experiments on a two-dimensional photoelastic granular system under three loading conditions: uniaxial compression, biaxial compression, and simple shear. From the interparticle forces, we find that the distributions of the normal component of the coarse-grained force-moment tensor are exponential-tailed, while the deviatoric component is Gaussian-distributed. This implies that the correct stress-based statistical mechanics conserves both the force-moment tensor and the Maxwell-Cremona force-tiling area. As such, two variables of state arise: the tensorial angoricity and a new temperature-like quantity associated with the force-tile area which we name keramicity. Each quantity is observed to be inversely proportional to the global confining pressure; however only keramicity exhibits the protocol-independence expected of a state variable, while tensorial angoricity behaves as a variable of process.

Data from: Market forces influence helping behaviour in cooperatively breeding paper wasps

Biological market theory is potentially useful for understanding helping behaviour in animal societies. It predicts that competition for trading partners will affect the value of commodities exchanged. It has gained empirical support in cooperative breeders, where subordinates help dominant breeders in exchange for group membership, but so far without considering one crucial aspect: outside options. We find support for the existence of a biological market in paper wasps, Polistes dominula. We first show that females have a choice of cooperative partners. Second, by manipulating entire subpopulations in the field, we increased the supply of outside options for subordinates, freeing up suitable nesting spots and providing additional nesting partners. We predicted that by intensifying competition for help, our manipulation would force dominants to accept a lower price for group membership. As expected, subordinates reduced their foraging effort following our treatments. We conclude that to accurately predict the amount of help provided, social units cannot be viewed in isolation as has traditionally been done: the surrounding market must also be considered.

Generation of Propulsive Force via Vertical Undulations in Snakes

<p>Lateral undulation is the most widespread mode of terrestrial vertebrate limbless locomotion, in which posteriorly propagating horizontal waves press against environmental asperities (e.g. grass, rocks) and generate propulsive reaction forces. We hypothesized that snakes can generate propulsion using a similar mechanism of posteriorly propagating vertical waves pressing against suitably oriented environmental asperities. Using an array of horizontally oriented cylinders, one of which was equipped with force sensors, and a motion capture system, we found snakes generated substantial propulsive force and propulsive impulse with minimal contribution from lateral undulation. Additional tests showed that snakes could propel themselves via vertical undulations from a single suitable contact point, and this mechanism was replicated in a robotic model. Vertical undulations can provide snakes a valuable locomotor tool for taking advantage of vertical asperities in a variety of habitats, potentially in combination with lateral undulation,  to fully exploit the 3D structure of the habitat.</p>

Data from: Assessing bite force estimates in extinct mammals and archosaurs using phylogenetic predictions

Bite force is an ecologically important biomechanical performance measure is informative in inferring the ecology of extinct taxa. However, biomechanical modelling to estimate bite force is associated with some level of uncertainty. Here, I assess the accuracy of bite force estimates in extinct taxa using a Bayesian phylogenetic prediction model. I first fitted a phylogenetic regression model on a training set comprising extant data. The model predicts bite force from body mass and skull width while accounting for differences owning to biting position. The posterior predictive model has a 93% prediction accuracy as evaluated through leave-one-out cross-validation. I then predicted bite force in 37 species of extinct mammals and archosaurs from the posterior distribution of predictive models. Biomechanically estimated bite forces fall within the posterior predictive distributions for all except four species of extinct taxa and are thus as accurate as that predicted from body size and skull width, given the variation inherent in extant taxa and the amount of time available for variance to accrue. Biomechanical modelling remains a valuable means to estimate bite force in extinct taxa and should be reliably informative of functional performances and serve to provide insights into past ecologies.
