Data from: Daphnia galeata and D. dentifera are geographically and ecologically separated whereas their hybrids occur in intermediate habitats: a survey of 44 Chinese lakes
The idea that hybridization promotes range expansion has received recent attention, but support from field studies is limited. We hypothesized that in the cladoceran waterflea Daphnia, parental species are geographically and ecologically separated, whereas hybrids occupy intermediate or occasionally extreme environments, potentially facilitating range expansion of parental species. We assessed the distribution of Daphnia dentifera, D. galeata and their interspecific hybrids across 44 lakes in China (using mitochondrial and microsatellite markers), and related it to geographical and environmental lake descriptors. Parental species were geographically separated: D. dentifera occurred in western and central China, and D. galeata in eastern and central China, whereas hybrids were found in the western and central parts of country. However, after controlling for geographical differences, the effect of environment on species distribution was strong and significant. Specifically, D. dentifera was present in high-altitude oligotrophic lakes, D. galeata in low-altitude eutrophic lakes, and hybrids at intermediate to high altitudes, mainly in mesotrophic lakes. Microsatellite data indicated that hybrids were locally produced rather than having migrated from elsewhere; they probably resulted from encounters between expanding D. galeata and resident D. dentifera. The present study provides evidence that hybrids can survive in habitats that are otherwise suitable for only one of their parental species, emphasizing the importance of hybridization in expansion of species gene pools.
Data from: Stability of a coevolving host-parasite system peaks at intermediate productivity
Habitat productivity may affect the stability of consumer-resource systems, through both ecological and evolutionary mechanisms. We hypothesize that coevolving consumer-resource systems show more stable dynamics at intermediate resource availability, while very low-level resource supply cannot support sufficiently large populations of resource and consumer species to avoid stochastic extinction, and extremely resource-rich environments may promote escalatory arms-race-like coevolution that can cause strong fluctuations in species abundance and even extinction of one or both trophic levels. We tested these ideas by carrying out an experimental evolution study with a model bacterium-phage system (Pseudomonas fluorescens SBW25 and its phage SBW25Φ2). Consistent with our hypothesis, this system was most stable at intermediate resource supply (fewer extinction events and smaller magnitude of population fluctuation). In our experiment, the rate of coevolution between bacterial resistance and phage infectivity was correlated with the magnitude of population fluctuation, which may explain the different in stability between levels of resource supply. Crucially, our results are consistent with a suggestion that, among the two major modes of antagonistic coevolution, arms race is more likely than fluctuation selection dynamics to cause extinction events in consumer-resource systems. This study suggests an important role of environment-dependent coevolutionary dynamics for the stability of consumer-resource species systems, therefore highlights the importance to consider contemporaneous evolutionary dynamics when studying the stability of ecosystems, particularly those under environmental changes.
Data underpinning "Candidate quantum disordered intermediate phase in the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the maple-leaf lattice"
<p>Data set underlying the figures in the article "Candidate quantum disordered intermediate phase in the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the maple-leaf lattice"</p> <p>Quantum antiferromagnets on geometrically frustrated lattices have long attracted interest for the formation of quantum disordered states and the possible emergence of quantum spin liquid ground states. Here we turn to the nearest-neighbor spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the maple-leaf lattice, which is known to relieve frustration by the formation of canted 120<strong>°</strong> magnetic order or valence bond crystal order when varying the bond anisotropy. Employing a pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group approach to assess its ground state phase diagram in detail, we present evidence for a quantum spin liquid (QSL) regime sandwiched between these two limiting phases. The formation of such a QSL might signal proximity to a possible deconfined quantum critical point from which it emerges, and that is potentially accessible by tuning the exchange couplings. Our conclusions are based on large-scale simulations involving a careful finite-size scaling analysis of the behavior of magnetic susceptibility and spin-spin correlation functions under renormalization group flow. </p>

Dataset: Methane and carbon dioxide fluxes in an intermediate marsh in Barataria Bay, LA (v.0.10)
<p>Methane and carbon dioxide fluxes were measured in August 2019 in an Intermediate salinity marsh in Barataria Bay, Louisiana. The flux chamber method was used to measure methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) under light and dark conditions in an Intermediate salinity marsh in Barataria Bay, LA. Fluxes were measured in plots with the following treatments: Control and high nutrients. Treatments included: Control; Sediment deposition- 0 (control) and 5 cm (45 kg river silt); Nutrient- Low nutrients: 645.2 g of CaNO3 and 11.11g of P2O5 High nutrients: 6451.6 g of CaNO3 and 111.1 g of P2O5; and Low nutrients + Sediment and High nutrients + Sediment Measurements included methane flux (calculated from concentration regressions over time), carbon dioxide flux (calculated from concentration regressions over time), air temperature inside and outside of chambers, PAR inside and outside of chambers, salinity and water table depth.</p>
