Tree communities and soil properties influence fungal community assembly in neotropical forests
<p>The influence exerted by tree communities, topography and soil chemistry on the assembly of macrofungal communities remains poorly understood, especially in highly diverse tropical forests. Here, we used a large dataset that combines inventories of macrofungal Basidiomycetes fruiting bodies, tree species composition and measurements for 16 soil physico-chemical parameters, collected in 34 plots located in four sites of lowland rainforests in French Guiana. Plots were established on three different topographical conditions: hilltop, slope and seasonally flooded soils. We found hyperdiverse Basidiomycetes communities, mainly comprising members of Agaricales and Polyporales. Phosphorus, clay contents and base saturation in soils strongly varied across plots and shaped the richness and composition of tree communities. The latter composition explained 23% of the variation in the composition of macrofungal communities, probably through high heterogeneity of the litter chemistry and selective effects of biotic interactions. The high local heterogeneity of habitats influenced the distribution of both macrofungi and trees, as a result of diversed local soil hydromorphic conditions associated to contrasting soil chemistry. This first regional study across habitats of French Guiana forests revealed new niches for macrofungi, such as ectomycorrhizal ones, and illustrate how macrofungi inventories are still paramount to can be to understand the processes at work in the tropics.</p>
Data from: Detailed characterization of the UMAMITs proteins provides insight into their evolution, amino acid transport properties, and role in the plant
<p>Amino acid transporters play a critical role in distributing amino acids within the cell compartments and between the plant organs. Despite this importance, relatively few amino acid transporter genes have been characterized and their role elucidated with certainty. Two main families of proteins encode amino acid transporters in plants: the Amino Acid-Polyamine-Organocation superfamily, containing mostly importers, and the Usually Multiple Acids Move In and out Transporter family, apparently encoding exporters, totaling 63 and 44 genes in Arabidopsis, respectively. Knowledge on UMAMITs is scarce, based on six Arabidopsis genes and a handful of genes from other species. To get insight into the role of the members of this family and provide data to be used for future characterization, we studied the evolution of the UMAMITs in plants, and determined the functional properties, the structure, and the localization of the 47 Arabidopsis UMAMITs. Our analysis showed that the AtUMAMITs are essentially localized at the tonoplast or the plasma membrane, and that most of them are able to export amino acids from the cytosol, confirming a role in intra- and inter-cellular amino acid transport. As an example, this set of data was used to hypothesize the role of a few AtUMAMITs in the plant and the cell.</p>

One of the keys for developing appropriate fabrication methods is determination of the composition and phase. Here we explore the FeGe system and establish reference Raman signatures for the distinction between the FeGe hexagonal and cubic structures, as well as FeGe<sub>2</sub> and Fe<sub>2</sub>Ge<sub>3</sub> phases. The experimental results are substantiated by first principles lattice dynamics calculations as well as by complementary structural characterizations such as transmission electron microscopy and X-Ray diffraction, along with the magnetic measurements.</p>

Medicinal properties of Morus alba for the control of type 2 diabetes mellitus: a systematic review
<p><strong>Background:</strong> the objective of this review was to evaluate the medicinal potential of <em>Morus alba</em> leaves on the control of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2). Research question: what is the medicinal potential of <em>Morus alba</em> leaves in the control of DM2? <strong>Methods:</strong> It was based on the PRISMA Declaration. The included studies were extracted from Scopus, Pubmed, ScienceDirect, Scielo, and Google Scholar; January 2015 to July 2021, Key search terms were MeSH and DeCS: <em>Morus alba</em>, mulberry, hypoglycemic agent. The inclusion criteria were: studies in rats administered <em>Morus alba</em> leaf extracts; studies that included the dimensions of lipidemia and glycemia; studies that included indicators such as fasting glucose, postprandial glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, triglycerides, low-density lipoproteins, total cholesterol, and insulin resistance. Exclusion criteria: studies in which <em>Morus alba</em> leaves were administered with other plants; studies with other parts of the <em>Morus alba</em> plant; proteomic studies, cancer, duplicate studies, in vitro studies, and evaluation of included studies. All included investigations were evaluated for biases. <strong>Results:</strong> The extracts of <em>Morus alba</em> leaves at the phytochemical level improve glucose uptake. Chlorogenic acid, isoquercitrin, and quercitrin, present in the leaves of <em>Morus alba</em> have hypoglycemic properties and an ameliorating effect on diabetic nephropathy. This leaf has pharmacological effects such as glucose absorption, insulin secretion production, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic activities, and obesity management. <strong>Conclusions:</strong> <em>Morus alba</em> leaves have pharmacological effects on DM2 that include glucose absorption, production of insulin secretion, antioxidant agent, antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic activities, and obesity control. Beyond these results, there is a lack of studies on the potential and synergistic effects of the components of <em>Morus alba</em> leaves, which limit the possibility of a more effective therapy using the leaves of the plant.</p>
Frog nest foams exhibit pharmaceutical foam-like properties
<p>Foams have frequently been used as systems for the delivery of cosmetic and therapeutic molecules; however, there is high variability in the foamability and long-term stability of synthetic foams. The development of pharmaceutical foams that exhibit desirable foaming properties, delivering appropriate amounts of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and that have excellent biocompatibility is of great interest. The production of stable foams is rare in the natural world; however, certain species of frogs have adopted foam production as a means of providing a protective environment for their eggs and larvae from a predators and parasites, to prevent desiccation, to control gaseous exchange, temperature extremes, and to reduce UV damage. These foams show great stability (up to 10 days in tropical environments) and are highly biocompatible due to the sensitive nature of amphibian skin. This work demonstrates for the first time, that nests of the Túngara frog (<i>Engystomops pustulosus</i>) is stable <i>ex situ</i> with useful physiochemical and biocompatible properties and is capable of encapsulating a range of compounds, including antibiotics. These protein foam mixtures share some properties with pharmaceutical foams and may find utility in a range of pharmaceutical applications such as a topical drug delivery systems (DDS).</p>

Large-scale drivers of relationships between soil microbial properties and organic carbon across Europe
<p>The aim of this study was to quantify direct and indirect relationships between soil microbial community properties (potential basal respiration, microbial biomass) and abiotic factors (soil, climate) in three major land-cover types.</p> <p>Location: Europe</p> <p>Time period: 2018</p> <p>Major taxa studied: Microbial community (fungi and bacteria)</p> <p>We collected 881 soil samples from across Europe in the framework of the Land Use/Land Cover Area Frame Survey (LUCAS). We measured potential soil basal respiration at 20ºC and microbial biomass (substrate-induced respiration) using an O2-microcompensation apparatus. Climate and soil data were obtained from previous LUCAS surveys and online databases. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to quantify relationships between variables, and equations extracted from SEMs were used to create predictive maps. Fatty acid methyl esters were measured in a subset of samples to distinguish fungal from bacterial biomass. Soil microbial properties in croplands were more heavily affected by climate variables than those in forests. Potential soil basal respiration and microbial biomass were correlated in forests but decoupled in grasslands and croplands, where microbial biomass depended on soil carbon. Forests had a higher ratio of fungi to bacteria than grasslands or croplands. Soil microbial communities in grasslands and croplands are likely carbon-limited in comparison with those in forests, and forests have a higher dominance of fungi indicating differences in microbial community composition. Notably, the often already-degraded soils of croplands could be more vulnerable to climate change than more natural soils. The provided maps show potentially vulnerable areas that should be explicitly accounted for in coming management plans to protect soil carbon and slow the increasing vulnerability of European soils to climate change.</p>

A generalized Hooke's law to study the transport properties of rocks
<p>The nonlinear characteristics of the rock transport properties as a function of stress (permeability and electrical conductivity in this study) is closely related to the geometry of the pore space, which consists of stiff pores, cracks and fractures. We consider two behaviors of the pore space, one linear and the other exponential, related to the stiff pores and fractures, respectively, where a generalized Hooke's law describes the relation between stress and strain. Using this theory, we derive relations between porosity, transport properties and effective stress (confining minus pore pressure), which are validated by experimental data of four tight sandstones collected from the Shaximiao Formation of Sichuan Basin, southwest China. The agreement is good. At low effective stresses, the closure of cracks is the main mechanism affecting the transport properties, whose behavior is similar in terms of their parameters. Subsequently, experimental data of six tight sandstones from the Yanchang Formation, collected from the Ordos Basin, west China, are employed to confirm the previous results, indicating that the fluid and electrical current follow the same path in the pore space. In addition, we find that the effect of metallic minerals on the electrical conductivity is more significant than that of clay.</p>
Data for Chandnani and Herrick, Influence of Target Properties on Wall Slumping in Lunar Impact Craters within the Simple-to-Complex Transition
<p>Data files for Figures 3 and S1 of the manuscript. These are craters counted in slump and ejecta units for the purpose of comparing their relative ages.</p> <p>The directory sf_shapefiles contains subdirectories for the 20 craters for which a slump unit and an ejecta unit had crater counts performed. The AREA_* shapefiles are polygons that outline the area studied, and the CRATER_* files are the individual craters counted. These files were created using CraterTools (<a href="https://www.geo.fu-berlin.de/en/geol/fachrichtungen/planet/software/_content/software/index.html">https://www.geo.fu-berlin.de/en/geol/fachrichtungen/planet/software/_content/software/index.html</a>) in ArcGIS, but that software is not necessary to use the shapefiles. </p> <p>The subdirectory SFD_figs_color and SFC_suppl_figs_color are, respectively, the CraterStats (https://www.geo.fu-berlin.de/en/geol/fachrichtungen/planet/software/_content/software/index.html) files used to generate Figure 3 of the main manuscript and Supplemental Figure S1. Each crater comprises a subdirectory of those main directories. Within each subdirectory, the *.plt file is the file directing CraterStats how to make the figure. The *.png file is the output figure from CraterStats, and the *.jpg file is the .png file after it has been cropped and the error bars have been changed from grey to black. The *.txt file provides the output from CraterStats that, among other things, provides the data fit of isochrons to the data. The *.diam files are data extracted from the shapefiles and provide the input into Craterstats. They have the lat-lon-diameter information on the craters and the counting area. All of these are commented text files, so you don’t need CraterStats to look at them and use them.</p>
Guided wave representations dataset for material property estimation and generation
<p>Material property identification in composite materials is necessary for material degradation as well as non-destructive characterization. The inverse problem needs a forward simulator. Ultrasonic-guided waves are sensitive to material properties and can be used for the purpose. The stiffness matrix method and group velocity calculation routine are used as the forward solver. The solver outputs polar group velocity curves of two fundamental Lamb wave modes for different material properties and ply layup sequences. The curves can be converted into binary images (black and white) named polar representations for image processing algorithms. The datasets contain polar representations corresponding to different material properties and ply layup sequences of a transversely isotropic laminate.</p>
