Data from: Evolution of leap-frog migration: A test of alternative hypotheses

Leap-frog migration is a common migration pattern in birds where the breeding and wintering latitudes between populations are in reversed latitudinal sequence. Competition for wintering and breeding sites has been suggested to be an ultimate factor and several competitor-based hypotheses have been proposed to explain this pattern. If wintering sites close to the breeding sites are favored, competitive exclusion could force subdominant individuals to winter further away. Competitive exclusion could be mediated either through body size or by prior occupancy. The alternative "spring predictability" hypothesis assumes competition for sufficiently close wintering areas, allowing the birds to use autocorrelated weather cues to optimally time spring migration departure. To test predictions and assumptions of these hypotheses, we combined morphometrics, migration and weather data from four populations of common ringed plover breeding along a latitudinal (56-68°N) and climatic gradient (temperate to Arctic). Critical for our evaluation was that two populations were breeding on the same latitude in subarctic Sweden and had the same distance to the closest potential wintering site, but differ in breeding phenology, and wintered in West Africa and Europe, respectively. Thus, while breeding on the same latitude, their winter distribution overlapped with that of an Arctic and temperate population, respectively. Body size was largest within the temperate population, but there was no size difference between the two subarctic. Populations wintering in Europe arrived there before populations wintering in Africa. The largest variation in arrival of meteorological spring occurred at the temperate breeding site, while there was almost no difference among the other sites. In general, temperatures at the northernmost wintering area correlated well with each breeding site prior to breeding site-specific spring arrival. Based on these observations, we conclude that competitive exclusion through body-size related dominance cannot explain leap-frog migration. Furthermore, the assumptions on which the 'spring predictability' hypothesis is based did not match the observed wintering ranges either. However, we could not reject the hypothesis that competitive exclusion mediated by prior occupancy in the wintering area could lead to leap-frog migration, and therefore this hypothesis should be retained as working hypothesis for further work.

Testing sunfish as zooplankton control agents for wastewater-algal cultivation: Nutrient, invertebrate, and algae data

Wastewater-algal cultivation is a promising means of recovering polluting nutrients and converting them into useful algal biomass. However, open raceway ponds used for wastewater-algal cultivation are prone to contamination by zooplankton, which often severely reduces algal yields. We conducted an experiment to test the potential for bluegill sunfish to improve yields by suppressing zooplankton. We used cages to protect the fish from the paddlewheels in 230-L raceway ponds. In nine raceways, the cage surrounded the paddlewheel and fish, if present, had access to the remaining tank area. In another nine raceways, the cage was on the opposite side from the paddlewheel, and contained the fish when present. Six fishless controls were implemented across both cage placements. We filled the raceways with synthetic wastewater and local plankton, and one juvenile bluefill sunfish (aside from controls). After 19 days we sampled dissolved nutrients, algae, and invertebrates in each raceway. This dataset consists of four csv files containing data from laboratory analyses of these samples. The data include dissolved nutrients, algal dry weights, zooplankton and benthic invertebrate counts, algal biovolumes, and algal nutrient content for each of the 18 raceway ponds.

We evaluate both the average transport coefficients used in quasi-linear diffusion transport, and also the full nonlinear wave-particle interactions. The magnitude of the calculated diffusion coefficients is found to increase proportionally to the wave amplitude squared, in agreement with quasi-linear diffusion theory. Cyclotron resonance of counterstreaming electrons (n=1 harmonic number) is more important for pitch-angle scattering than Landau resonance. Landau resonance of costreaming electrons (n=0) is comparable to cyclotron resonance for energy diffusion and advection. Strong acceleration of high-pitch-angle, costreaming electrons arises in nonlinear wave-particle interactions with high amplitude waves. In our simulations with zero parallel electric field, the energy source for electron acceleration is the wave's perpendicular electric field, in both the cyclotron and Landau resonances. The Landau resonance can happen even with zero parallel electric field, if the wave packet propagates with a finite wave-normal angle. This resonance between the particle's azimuthal velocity and the wave fields leads to trapping and substantial parallel acceleration.

Article key points

Cyclotron resonance of counterstreaming electrons is dominant for pitch-angle scattering, consistent with quasi-linear theory

Landau and cyclotron resonances are comparable for acceleration; here the energy source is the wave perpendicular electric field in both

Substantial Landau parallel acceleration occurs with a finite wave-normal angle, even with zero parallel electric field

Acknowledgments

These simulations were performed at Dartmouth's Discovery computer cluster. H.E.S.S. first public test data release

The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is an array of ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in Namibia. For the first time, the H.E.S.S. collaboration is releasing a small dataset of event lists and instrument response information. This is a test data release, with the motivation to support the ongoing efforts to define open high-level data models and associated formats, as well as open-source science tools for gamma-ray astronomy. The data are in FITS format. Open-source science tools that support this format exist already.

The release data consists of 27.9 hours in total of observations of the Crab nebula, PKS 2155−304, MSH 15−52 and RX J1713.7−3946 taken with the H.E.S.S. 1 array. Most data are from 2004, the PKS 2155−304 data are from 2006 and 2008. In addition, 20.7 hours of off observations of empty fields of view are included. The targets and observations were chosen to be suitable for common analysis use cases, including point-like and extended sources for spectral and morphology measurements, as well as a variable source (PKS 2155−304) and the off dataset for background studies. The total size of the files in this data release is 42.8 MB.

This is a very small subset of the thousands of hours of H.E.S.S. 1 observations taken since 2004. The quality of this dataset, and measurements derived from this data, does not reflect the state of the art for H.E.S.S. publications, e.g. the event reconstruction and gamma-hadron separation method used here is a very basic one.

See https://www.mpi-hd.mpg.de/hfm/HESS/pages/dl3-dr1/ for further information, including links how to analyse the data.
