Prevalence, Prevention and Willingness to Vaccinate against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) among Women with Adolescent Daughters in Rivers State, Nigeria: A Cross-Sectional Study
<p>Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a significant public health concern due to its association with cervical cancer. Understanding the prevalence of HPV vaccination, prevention practices, and the willingness to vaccinate among women with adolescent daughters is important for improving vaccination coverage. This study aims to assess the prevalence of HPV vaccination, knowledge of HPV prevention, and the willingness to vaccinate daughters among women attending outpatient clinics in Rivers State, Nigeria. A hospital-based descriptive, multi-centre, cross-sectional study was conducted from March to May 2021 at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) and Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH). The study included 304 women with adolescent daughters, recruited through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a pretested self-administered questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 23, with results presented in frequencies and percentages. Of the 304 participants, 40% were aged 30-39 years, and 73.4% had tertiary education. Only 2.3% had previously vaccinated their daughters against HPV. The primary reasons for not vaccinating included insufficient information (54.2%) and lack of access to the vaccine (26.9%). Despite this, 70.4% of the respondents expressed willingness to vaccinate their daughters if provided with adequate information and access. The study highlights a low prevalence of HPV vaccination among adolescent girls in Rivers State, with significant barriers including lack of information and access. However, there is a high willingness to vaccinate, indicating the potential for increased vaccination rates through targeted educational and accessibility interventions.</p>

Children' and adolescents' reasoning about exclusion in novel groups
<p>This study examined children’s and adolescents’ reasoning about the exclusion of others in peer and school contexts. Participants (80 8-year-olds, 85 11-year-olds, 74 14-year-olds, and 73 20-year-olds) were asked to judge and reason about the acceptability of exclusion from novel groups by children and school principals. Three contexts for exclusion between two groups were systematically varied: unequal economic status, geographical location, or a control (no reason provided for group differences). Regardless of condition, participants believed that exclusion was less acceptable in peer than school contexts, and when children excluded rather than principals. Participants also used more moral and less social conventional reasoning for peer than school contexts. In terms of condition, whereas 8-year-olds rated exclusion based on unequal economic status as less acceptable than when based on geographical location or no reason when enacted by a principal, 14-year-olds rated the unequal economic condition as more acceptable than the other two contexts. Eleven- and 20-year-olds did not distinguish economic status differences. The findings suggest that children and adolescents are sensitive to context and take multiple variables into account, including the type of group difference (socioeconomic status or other reasons), authority status of the perpetrator of exclusion, and setting (school or peer). Patterns may have differed from past research because of the socio-cultural context in which exclusion was embedded and the contexts of group differences.</p>

ANALYSIS OF GIRLS' HEALTH PROBLEMS IN ADOLESCENCE AND PREDICTION OF PCOS
<p><span>The relevance of the study of reproductive health and risk assessment of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is related to the fact that this disease is a common cause of infertility, and is also a global somatic health problem, including disorders of the endocrine-metabolic status, cardiovascular diseases and has a high oncological risk. The aim of the study is to evaluate the results of clinical and anamnestic indicators that contribute to the development of PCOS in adolescent girls. The study included 182 adolescent girls from 13 to 17 years old, who were interviewed with questionnaires that reflected such health issues as the characteristics of menstrual function, metabolic disorders, genetic predisposition to diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension. The degrees of development of the mammary glands were also assessed according to the Tanner scale and the degree of hirsutism according to the Ferriman-Gallwey scale. Thus, according to the results of the study, it is clear that half of the adolescent girls in Tashkent suffer from algomenorrhea syndrome. Our region is also prone to anemia due to the monthly loss of large amounts of blood. It should be noted that almost half of the girls have intermenstrual bleeding, which may be associated with an unsettled menstrual cycle, but this is observed in every second girl. As is known, theoretically, thelarche occurs a year earlier than menarche. Our studies have confirmed the results of previous studies. More than half of the girls assess their skin condition as unsatisfactory, noting acne, which is considered a physiological norm, but this is not satisfactory and leads to depression. Of particular note is the burden of diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension in relatives. Most girls suffer from hirsutism. The onset of puberty is a critical moment in the development of PCOS and early intervention is, in the opinion of researchers in recent years, mandatory.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Key words:</span></strong><span> PCOS, hyperandrogenemia, acne, anovulation, insulin resistance, obesity, body mass index.</span></p>
PROINFLAMMATORY AND ADIPOCYTE MARKERS AS INDICATORS OF MENSTRUAL CYCLE DISORDERS IN OVERWEIGHT ADOLESCENT GIRLS
<p>Цель: определение сывороточного содержания ключевых адипокинов и провоспалительных цитокинов у девочек-подростков с избыточной массой тела для выявления их роли в развитии нарушений менструального цикла. Материал и методы. В исследовании участвовали 50 девочек подростков, из которых в основная группа вошли 25 девочек избыточной массой тела. В контрольную группу вошли 25 девочек с нормальной массой тела. Определение сывороточных уровней адипокинов и провоспалительных цитокинов проводили методом ИФА, в соответствии с рекомендациями производителя. Результаты. Установлено, что дисбаланс адипокинов и повышенные уровни провоспалительных цитокинов связаны с нарушениями менструальной функции у подростков с избыточной массой тела. Выводы. Изученные показатели являются значимыми предикторами менструальных нарушений.</p> <p><strong><span>Ключевые слова:</span></strong><span> девочки, подростки менструальный цикл, сыворотка, цитокины, адипокины, дисбаланс.</span></p>

Training beyond borders: A WPA pilot project for child and adolescent mental health course in Pakistan
<p><strong>Purpose</strong>: The World Psychiatric Association (WPA) strives to close the gap between expertise in high-income countries (HICs) and low and middle-income countries (LMICs). WPA volunteering programme is a project framework wherein area-specific experts from HICs volunteer to support local experts in the LMICs in training their own professionals. This paper reports on the outcome of a collaborative project on Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMH) training in Pakistan.</p> <p><strong>Materials and methods</strong>: Thirty participants from twenty-three different institutions across Pakistan were selected on the basis of their interest in CAMH. Two volunteers (ST and MH) met online with the Pakistani representatives (NI and QUH) to develop a programme. They also regularly met online between the sessions to evaluate adjustments in order to increase the appropriateness of the offered content according to participant feedback and suggestions.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: The pre- and post-course evaluation revealed statistically significant improvement in knowledge and skills gained in different topics covered in the course (P-value<0.001) as well as improvement in confidence in applying the theoretical understanding of CAMH problems in their daily clinical practice (P-value<0.001)</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong>: The WPA volunteering programme is a valuable strategy to deliver effective and much-needed training in low-resource settings. Long-distance learning via live online sessions is effective and worthwhile, especially when they provide opportunities for participants to learn from interactive sessions.</p>
