Supplementary material for the publication: J. D. Nixon, K. Bhargava and E. Gaura, Analysis of standalone solar streetlights for improved energy access in displaced settlements, 2020.

<p>The dataset deposited here was prepared under&nbsp;the EPSRC-funded&nbsp;<a href="http://heed-refugee.coventry.ac.uk/">Humanitarian Engineering and Energy for Displacement</a>&nbsp;research project (EP/P029531/1). The project aimed to understand energy needs of displaced communities, create an evidence base on the usage of different energy interventions and provide recommendations for improved design of future energy interventions to better meet the needs of people.</p> <p>As part of the project, we deployed 11 advanced solar streetlights, with additional energy access provided by ground-level AC sockets, at two project sites:&nbsp;Gihembe refugee camp, Rwanda (4 lights) and Uttargaya settlement, Nepal (7 lights), in July 2019. The aim of this study was to (a) identify best practices in the construction, location and security measures for long-lived street lighting (b) understand how communities would use a shared energy resource when available through energy sockets, auxiliary to the main function of the streetlights.</p> <p>The system data used for the performance analysis for this study (July 2019 and March 2020) is deposited here along with the metadata. The results from analysis are presented in a paper titled &#39;<strong>Analysis of standalone solar streetlights for improved energy access in displaced settlements</strong>&#39; (currently under review). The scripts for analysis can be found at our Github account <a href="https://github.com/cogent-computing">Cogent Labs</a>&nbsp;under HEED_Nepal_SL and HEED_Rwanda_SL repositories.</p>

<p>This is the dataset used in the study &quot;Hydro-economic analysis of infrastructure investment options within the Water-Energy-Food nexus in the Niger River basin&quot;. This study has been conducted within the Department of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark&nbsp;as a Master Thesis project.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>The dataset describes the water-energy-food nexus of the Niger River basin used as input to the open source single objective hydro-economic optimization model WHAT-IF. Data from: Calculation on surface energy and electronic properties of CoS2

<p>Density functional theory was employed to investigate the (111), (200), (210), (211), and (220) surfaces of CoS<sub>2</sub>. The surface energy were calculated with a sulfur environment using first-principles based thermodynamics. It is founded that surfaces with metal atoms at their outermost layer are predicted to have higher energy. The stoichiometric (220) surface terminated by two layer of sulfur atoms is the most stable under the sulfur-rich condition, while the nonstoichiometric (211) surface terminated by a layer of Co atoms has the lower energy under the decreasingly sulfur-poor environment. A spin-polarized bands were calculated on the stoichiometric surfaces. The electric structure results showed that there may be some active sites on (200) since it has high Fermi energy and its front valence electrons are active. There was an energy gap between the stoichiometric (220) and (211), which have low Fermi energy, indicating that the electronic structures were dynamically stable. These two stoichiometric (200) and (210) surfaces are predicted to be noticeably spin-polarized. The results of BFDH method was adopted to predict crystal growth habit. It showed that the important crystal planes for the CoS<sub>2</sub> crystal growth were (111) and (200) planes, and the macroscopic morphology of CoS<sub>2</sub> crystal may be spherical, cubic, octahedral, prismatic or plate-shaped, which have been verified by experiments.</p>

Data from: High rates of carbon and dinitrogen fixation suggest a critical role of benthic pioneer communities in the energy and nutrient dynamics of coral reefs

<p>1. Following coral mortality in tropical reefs, pioneer communities dominated by filamentous and crustose algae efficiently colonize substrates previously occupied by coral tissue. This phenomenon is particularly common after mass coral mortality following prolonged bleaching events associated with marine heatwaves.</p> <p>2. Pioneer communities play an important role for the biological succession and reorganization of reefs after disturbance. However, their significance for critical ecosystem functions previously mediated by corals, such as the efficient cycling of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) within the reef, remains uncertain.</p> <p>3. We used 96 carbonate tiles to simulate the occurrence of bare substrates after disturbance in a coral reef of the central Red Sea. We measured rates of C and dinitrogen (N<sub>2</sub>) fixation of pioneer communities on these tiles monthly over an entire year. Coupled with elemental and stable isotope analyses, these measurements provide insights into macronutrient acquisition, export, and the influence of seasonality.</p> <p>4. Pioneer communities exhibited high rates of C and N<sub>2</sub> fixation within 4 – 8 weeks after the introduction of experimental bare substrates. Ranging from 13 to 25 μmol C cm<sup>−2</sup> d<sup>−1</sup> and 8 to 54 nmol N cm<sup>−2</sup> d<sup>−1</sup>, respectively, C and N<sub>2</sub> fixation rates were comparable to reported values for established Red Sea coral reefs. This similarity indicates that pioneer communities may quickly compensate for the loss of benthic productivity by corals. Notably, between 40 and 85% of fixed organic C was exported into the environment, constituting a vital source of energy for the coral reef food web.</p> <p>5. Our findings suggest that benthic pioneer communities may play a crucial, yet overlooked role in the C and N dynamics of oligotrophic coral reefs by contributing to the input of new C and N after coral mortality. While not substituting other critical ecosystem functions provided by corals (e.g. structural habitat complexity and coastal protection), pioneer communities likely contribute to maintaining coral reef nutrient cycling through the accumulation of biomass and import of macronutrients following coral loss.</p>

Energetic limits: Defining the bounds and trade-offs of successful energy management in a capital breeder

<p>1. Judicious management of energy can be invaluable for animal survival and reproductive success. Capital breeding mammals typically transfer energy to their young at extremely high rates while undergoing prolonged fasting, making lactation a tremendously energy demanding period. Effective management of the competing demands of the mother's energy needs and those of her offspring is presumably fundamental to maximising lifetime reproductive success.</p> <p>2. How does the mother maximise her chances of successfully rearing her pup, by ensuring that both her pup and herself have sufficient energy during this 'energetic fast'? While energy management models were first discussed in the 1990s, application of this analytical technique is still very much in its infancy. Recent work suggests that a broad range of species exhibit 'energy compensation'; during periods when they expend more energy on activity, their bodies partially compensate by reducing background (basal) metabolic rate as an adaptation to limit overall energy expenditure. However, the value of energy management models in understanding animal ecology is presently unclear.</p> <p>3. We investigate whether energy management models provide insights into the breeding strategy of phocid seals. Not only do we expect lactating seals to display energy compensation because of their breeding strategy of high energy transfer while fasting, but we anticipate that mothers exhibiting a lack of energy compensation are less likely to rear offspring successfully.</p> <p>4. On the Isle of May in Scotland, we collected heart rate data as a proxy for energy expenditure in 52 known individual grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) mothers, repeatedly across three years of breeding. We provide evidence that grey seal mothers typically exhibit energy compensation during lactation by down-regulating their background metabolic rate to limit daily energy expenditure during periods when other energy costs are relatively high. However, individuals that fail to energy compensate during the lactation period are more likely to end lactation earlier than expected.</p> <p>5. Our study is the first to demonstrate the importance of energy compensation to an animal's reproductive expenditure. Moreover, our multi-seasonal data indicate that environmental stressors may reduce the capacity of some individuals to follow the energy compensation strategy. </p>

Hybrid-electric passenger car energy utilization and emissions: Relationships for real-world driving conditions that account for road grade

<p>Past research showed on-road emissions patterns unique to hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), indicating the need to account for them in emissions models as projected HEV sales increase over the coming decades. This work defines and characterizes a variable that quantifies HEV operating behavior to inform future development of new HEV emissions models based on current knowledge of conventional vehicle (CV) emissions patterns. Instantaneous hybridization factor (IHF), was quantified using on-road data collected from a 2010 Toyota Camry HEV. IHF is the ratio of electric system power to total system power and accounts for energy storage in the high voltage battery (IHF ranges from −1 to +1). Relationships between IHF and vehicle specific power (VSP), road type and road grade were examined. Negative VSP resulted in regenerative braking operation (IHF = −0.01 to −1) 90% of the time. IHF identified the VSP range where HEV operation was highly variable (VSP = −1 to 8 kW/ton) when driving at speeds below the ICE-off threshold (42 mph). VSP and IHF together account for 76–86% of the variability in HEV CO<sub>2</sub> emissions in this study. CO<sub>2</sub> model results using VSP computed with the measured real-world road grade (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.86) gave improved fits over the no-grade VSP model (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.69). This study establishes one framework for calculating the instantaneous HEV power split, confirms the need to include road grade in VSP for accurate modeling of vehicle emissions, and identified the need for significant improvements in on-board diagnostic (OBD) scantool measurement requirements for HEVs in three areas: (1) temporal resolution (sub-second to capture transient events such as ICE restarts); (2) simultaneous data logging capability for multiple controller area networks (i.e., engine and HEV parameters together); and (3) improved data precision.</p>

Long-term nitrogen addition alters the community and energy channel but not diversity of soil nematodes in a subtropical forest

Summary <ol> <li>Research has indicated that increases in nitrogen (N) deposition can greatly affect ecosystem processes and functions. There is limited information about the effects of long-term N addition on soil nematodes and their functional composition, although nematodes are the most abundant multicellular animals on Earth.</li> <li>We conducted a field experiment in 2004 with four levels of N addition (0, 60, 120, and 240 kg N ha<sup>-1 </sup>yr<sup>-1</sup>) in a subtropical <i>Cunninghamia lanceolata</i> forest. Soil samples with three depths (0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm) were collected and the community structure, diversity and trophic groups of soil nematodes were determined in 2014.</li> <li>N addition significantly increased the abundance of bacterial- and fungal-feeding nematodes, but decreased the abundance of plant-feeding nematodes at the 0-20 cm soil layer. Accordingly, the plant parasite index and enrichment index decreased but the basal index and channel index increased, which weaken the importance of the plant-based energy channel, but enhance the importance of the fungal-based energy channel. N addition had no effects on the diversity of soil nematodes in three soil depths. Structural equation modeling analysis indicated that N loading directly changed plant-feeding (total <i>r<sup>2</sup></i>=0.42) nematodes, or indirectly affected bacterial- (<i>r<sup>2</sup></i>=0.43), fungal- (<i>r<sup>2</sup></i>=0.31) and plant-feeding nematodes via change soil nutrients, soil water content and pH.</li> <li>These findings suggest that N addition can change the community structure and energy channels soil nematodes, which would affect soil processes and food web functions in forest soils under future environmental change scenarios.</li> </ol>

An investigation on the effect of high energy storage anchor on surrounding rock conditions

High pre-tension bolt is an effective strata control technique and is the key to ensure the stability of anchorage and roadway. Based on the performances of high energy storage tension rock bolts in different rock properties, this study proposed a constitutive model to describe the energy balance of anchor under uniaxial compression. UDEC was used to simulate the behaviour of anchor in coal under uniaxial compression and the results were analysed to study the rock mechanical properties, degree of damage and energy evolution. Simulation results showed that tension rock bolts can improve the mechanical properties and energy storage capacities of anchor. The energy evolution was divided into three stages: i) the external work was stored in the form of elastic strain energy (Ue) in the anchor prior to the yielding strength; ii) the elastic strain energy reached its maximum near the peak strength; iii) Energy was dissipated from fracture friction (Wf ), plastic deformation (Wp) and acoustic emission (Ur) during post-peak stage. The installation of tension rock bolts was more suitable for medium hard rock (e.g. sandy mudstone), whereas it was not effective for hard rock (e.g. sandstone).

Molecular geometries and energies from quantum mechanical calculations and small molecule force field evaluations.
