Optic flow and odometry data from intelrealsense camera

Insects rely on the perception of image motion, or optic flow, to estimate their velocity relative to nearby objects. This information provides important sensory input for avoiding obstacles. However, certain behaviors, such as estimating the absolute distance to a landing target, accurately measuring absolute distance travelled, and estimating the ambient wind speed require decoupling optic flow into its component parts: absolute ground velocity and distance to nearby objects. Behavioral experiments suggest that insects perform these calculations, but their mechanism for doing so remains unknown. Here we present a novel algorithm that combines the geometry of dynamic forward motion with known features of insect visual processing to provide a hypothesis for how insects might \textit{directly} estimate absolute ground velocity from a combination of optic flow and acceleration information. Our robotics-inspired-biology approach reveals three critical requirements. First, absolute ground velocity can only be directly estimated from optic flow during times of active acceleration and deceleration. Second, spatial pooling of optic flow across a receptive field helps to alleviate the effects of noise and/or low resolution visual systems. Third, averaging velocity estimates from multiple receptive fields further helps to reject noise. Our algorithm provides a hypothesis for how insects might estimate absolute velocity from vision during active maneuvers, and also provides a theoretical framework for designing fast analog circuitry for efficient state estimation that can be applied to insect-sized robots.

Elastic energy storage in seahorses leads to a unique suction flow dynamics compared to other actinopterygian

Suction feeding is a dominant prey-capture strategy across actinopterygians, consisting of a rapid expansion of the mouth cavity that drives a flow of water containing the prey into the mouth. Suction feeding is a power-hungry behavior, involving the actuation of cranial muscles as well as the anterior third of the fish's swimming muscles. Seahorses, which have reduced swimming muscles, evolved a unique mechanism for elastic energy storage that powers their suction flows. This mechanism allows seahorses to achieve head rotation speeds that are 50 times faster than fish lacking such a mechanism. However, it is unclear how the dynamics of suction flows in seahorses differ from the conserved pattern observed across other actinopterygians, nor how differenced in snout length across seahorses affect these flows. Using flow visualization experiments, we show that seahorses generate suction flows that are 8 times faster than similar-sized fish, and that the temporal patterns of cranial kinematics and suction flows in seahorses differs from the conserved pattern observed across other actinopterygians. However, the spatial patterns retain the conserved actinopterygian characteristics, where suction flows impact a radially symmetric region of ∼1 gape diameter outside the mouth. Within seahorses, increases in snout length were associated with slower suction flows and faster head rotation speeds, resulting in a trade-off between pivot feeding and suction feeding. Overall, this study shows how the unique cranial kinematics in seahorses are manifested in their suction feeding performance, and highlights the trade-offs associated with their unique morphology and mechanics.

COVID19 Flow-Maps Daily-Mobility for Spain

This data-set contains daily aggregations of the hourly data provided by MITMA, aggregated at different levels of spatial resolution.

Maestra 1: Origin-Destination matrix for the mobility layer, with hourly resolution Each entry has a date and time period (the range between two consecutive hours), the origin and destination zones and the number of trips from origin to destination. Origin and destination zones correspond to geometries from the MITMA mobility layer and internal trips (same layer of origin and destination) are also reported.

Maestra 2: Trips per person matrix on each mobility area on a daily basis. This indicator reports population-based daily mobility behavior. For each date and zone from the MITMA mobility layer, the indicator reports how many persons have performed 0, 1, 2 or more than 2 trips. While the indicator does not provide the destination of the trips, it accounts for the fractions of people performing at least one trip or none, as well as the estimated total population in that zone for the given date (considering as population those persons who stay overnight in the zone on that date).

Original data records come from a study conducted by the MITMA, which analyses the mobility and distribution of the population in Spain from February 14th 2020 to May 9th 2021. The study is based on a sample of more than 13 million anonymised mobile phone lines provided by a single mobile operator whose subscribers are evenly distributed.

For more information visit: https://flowmaps.life.bsc.es/flowboard/data and https://www.mitma.gob.es/ministerio/covid-19/evolucion-movilidad-big-data.

Data accompanying the paper titled: Evaluation of a forest parameterization to improve boundary layer flow simulations over complex terrain.

The present repository contains the namelists, output data from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) numerical simulations and observations described in the article "Evaluation of a forest parameterization to improve boundary layer flow simulations over complex terrain" submitted to the Geosciences Model Development journal.

The numerical simulations were developed to evaluate the influence of a forest parametrization on the simulation of the boundary layer flow over moderate complex terrain in the context of the Perdigão 2017 field campaign. The numerical simulations used WRF large eddy simulation mode (WRF-LES). The short-term high resolution (40 m horizontal grid spacing) and long-term (200 m horizontal grid spacing) WRF-LES were run for an integration time of 12 hours and 1.5 months, respectively, with and without forest parameterization. The short-term simulations focus on low-level jet events over the valley, while the long-term simulations cover the whole intensive observation period (IOP) of the field campaign. The results are validated using lidar and meteorological tower observations.

The files in the repository are organized as follows:

Namelists used to run the WRF model are located in the 'namelists' sub-directory.

Data slices of domains d03 and d04 covering the location of the three meteorological towers and LIDAR for the whole integration time are located in the 'reduced_domain' sub-directory.

Direct WRF output for selected periods (representing the low-level-jet episodes observed) for domains d03 and d04 are located in the 'files_select_time' sub-directory.

The observations used to validate the model are located in the 'observations' sub-directory. The complete dataset of observations from the field campaign can be found in the official campaign data repository: re3data.org: Perdigao Field Experiment; editing status 2020-03-20; re3data.org - Registry of Research Data Repositories. http://doi.org/10.17616/R31NJMN4 last accessed: 2021-10-13. Pleistocene divergence in the absence of gene flow among populations of a viviparous reptile with intraspecific variation in sex determination

Polymorphisms can lead to speciation if there is differential mating success among conspecifics divergent for a trait. Polymorphism for sex determining system might be particularly expected to isolate gene pools, given strong selection for the production of viable males and females and the low success of heterogametic hybrids when sex chromosomes differ (Haldane's rule). We investigated this question using a rare example of a species exhibiting polymorphism for sex determination: the viviparous snow skink Carinascincus ocellatus. While a coparatively high elevation population has entirely genotypic sex determination, in a lower elevation population there is an additional environmental component to sex determination. These systems also exhibit minor differences in sex-linked genotypes. Using 'Isolation with Migration' analysis of neutral loci, we estimated that these populations and their sex determining systems diverged in the absence of gene flow, across multiple periods of geographic proximity during Pleistocene glaciations. Our analysis suggests that populations of C. ocellatus with divergent sex determining systems are likely reproductively isolated, even though they are presently underlined by only subtle DNA differences. Given the influence of temperature on sex in one lineage, we also discuss the implications for the persistence of this polymorphism under climate change.

Going against the flow: barriers to gene flow impact patterns of connectivity in cryptic coral reef gobies throughout the western Atlantic

Aim: Complex oceanographic features have historically caused difficulty in understanding gene flow in marine taxa. Here, we evaluate the impact of potential phylogeographic barriers to gene flow and assess demography and evolutionary history of a coral reef goby species complex. Specifically, we test how the Amazon River outflow and ocean currents impact gene flow.

Location: Western Atlantic.

Taxon: The bridled goby (Coryphopterus glaucofraenum) and sand-canyon goby (C. venezuelae) species complex.

Methods: We used mitochondrial DNA and 2401 genomic SNPs to investigate evolutionary history and test hypotheses of how major barriers impact species-level differentiation. We used clustering algorithms and pairwise FST to assess population differentiation caused by minor barriers within and among regions. Finally, we tested alternate hypotheses of demographic history via coalescent simulations to determine the most plausible spread across the Western Atlantic.

Results: We found two unique clades of C. glaucofraenum along the Brazilian coast and Atol das Rocas (AR) that are more closely related to C. venzuelae. Further genetic structure within the Caribbean and separately along the Brazilian coast led to at least two distinct populations in each location. Coalescent simulations indicated that an ancestral population of C. venezuelae split from C. glaucofraenum in the Caribbean, dispersed to Brazil, then spread to AR.

Main Conclusions: Species-level genetic differentiation has resulted from the Amazon River outflow and isolation of AR. Population differentiation within the Caribbean matched previous studies indicating an east-west pattern of divergence. Brazilian population differentiation was impacted by the cold-water upwelling at Cabo Frio. Overall, this research highlights how barriers to gene flow impact speciation and genetic structure within western Atlantic gobies and provides insight into the role oceanographic features have in the speciation process of fishes.

Relative cerebral flow from dynamic PIB scans as an alternative for FDG scans in Alzheimer's disease PET studies

In Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) dual-tracer positron emission tomography (PET) studies with 2-[18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) and 11C-labelled Pittsburgh Compound B (PIB) are used to assess metabolism and cerebral amyloid-β deposition, respectively. Regional cerebral metabolism and blood flow (rCBF) are closely coupled, both providing an index for neuronal function. The present study compared PIB-derived rCBF, estimated by the ratio of tracer influx in target regions relative to reference region (R1) and early-stage PIB uptake (ePIB), to FDG scans. Fifteen PIB positive (+) patients and fifteen PIB negative (-) subjects underwent both FDG and PIB PET scans to assess the use of R1 and ePIB as a surrogate for FDG. First, subjects were classified based on visual inspection of the PIB PET images. Then, discriminative performance (PIB+ versus PIB-) of rCBF methods were compared to normalized regional FDG uptake. Strong positive correlations were found between analyses, suggesting that PIB-derived rCBF provides information that is closely related to what can be seen on FDG scans. Yet group related differences between method’s distributions were seen as well. Also, a better correlation with FDG was found for R1 than for ePIB. Further studies are needed to validate the use of R1 as an alternative for FDG studies in clinical applications.

The enclosed dataset refers to the work developed at the University Medical Center Groningen and consists of all the data retrieved from the PET images and from clinical assessment used in this work.

Heterogeneously catalyzed continuous flow reactors with highly insulating wall materials for the production of hydrogen by steam reforming

Heterogeneously catalyzed continuous flow reactors with highly insulating wall materials for the production of hydrogen by steam reforming

Junjie Chen

Department of Energy and Power Engineering, School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, Henan Polytechnic University, 2000 Century Avenue, Jiaozuo, Henan, 454000, P.R. China

Contributor: Junjie Chen, ORCID: 0000-0001-5055-4309, E-mail address: komcjj@gmail.com

Catalysts may be classified generally according to their physical state, their chemical nature, or the nature of the reactions that they catalyze. Catalysts may be gases, liquids, or solids. In homogeneous catalysis, the catalyst is molecularly dispersed in the same phase (usually gaseous or liquid) as the reactants. In heterogeneous catalysis the reactants and the catalyst are in different phases, separated by a phase boundary. Most commonly, heterogeneous catalysts are solids, and the reactants are gases or liquids. When the catalyst and the reacting substances are present together in a single state of matter, usually as a gas or a liquid, it is customary to classify the reactions as cases of homogeneous catalysis. Oxides of nitrogen serve as catalysts for the oxidation of sulfur dioxide in the lead chamber process for producing sulfuric acid, an instance of homogeneous catalysis in which the catalyst and reactants are gases. Traces of water vapour catalyze some gas reactions, for example, the interaction of carbon monoxide and oxygen, which proceeds only slowly in dry conditions. Sulfuric acid used as a catalyst for the formation of diethyl ether from ethyl alcohol is an example of homogeneous catalysis in the liquid phase (when the products, water and ether, are continuously removed by distillation); by this method, considerable quantities of alcohol can be converted to ether with a single charge of sulfuric acid. The inversion of cane sugar and the hydrolysis of esters by acid solutions also are examples of homogeneous catalysis in the liquid phase.

Streamwise distance (meter), Heterogeneous reaction rate along the length of the reactor (mole per square meter per second)

0
