Indirect actuation reduces flight power requirements in Manduca sexta via elastic energy exchange

<p>In many insects, wing movements are generated indirectly via exoskeletal deformations. Measurements of inertial and aerodynamic power suggest that elastic recovery of energy between wingstrokes might reduce power requirements of flight. We tested three questions. 1) Can the thorax itself provide significant energy return? 2) Does a simple damped elastic model describe the bulk mechanical behavior? and 3) Are different regions of the thorax specialized for elastic energy exchange? We measured deformation mechanics of the hawkmoth <em>Manduca sexta</em> thorax by recording the force required to sinusoidally deform the thorax over a wide frequency range. Elastic energy storage in the thorax is sufficient to minimize power requirements. However, we find that a structural (frequency-independent) damping model, not a viscoelastic model, best describes the thorax's mechanical properties. We next performed complementary experiments on a structurally damped homogeneous hemisphere. In contrast to the hemispherical shell, we find that mechanical coupling between different regions of the thorax improves energy exchange performance, and that local mechanical properties depend on global strain patterns. Specifically, the scutum region provides energy recovery with low dissipation, while the majority of energy loss occurred in the wing hinge region, highlighting the specificity of thorax regions for flight energetics. </p>

DICOM images of abdomen CT phantom in axial, helicoid, iterative and dual energy scans.

<p>The two ZIP files contain the images of a CT phantom of abdomen. DualEnergy.zip contains files of acquisition at 80 kVp and 140 kVp. The second file HelicalAxialIterative.zip contains acquisition done in axial, helicoidal&nbsp;(aka spiral) and iterative reconstruction (Saphire) modes.&nbsp; Axial images have AbdSeq in the name, Helicoidal have Abdomen and B in the filter name, Iterative have Abdomen and I in the filter name. You can compare Exposure in mAs for each acquisition modality, how it diminishes from sequential/helicoidal/axial through helicoidal/spiral to iterative. This scanner if programmed with iterative acquisition can still&nbsp;&nbsp;reduce exposure from helicoidal scan. Impact of Clean Energy on CO2 Emissions and Economic Growth within the Phases of Renewables Diffusion in Selected European Countries

<p>This study explores the impact of clean energy and non-renewable energy consumption on CO<sub>2</sub> emissions and economic growth within two phases (formative and expansion) of renewable energy diffusion for three selected countries (France, Spain, and Sweden). The vector autoregression (VAR) model is estimated on the basis of annual data disaggregated into quarterly data. The Granger causality results reveal distinctive differences in the causality patterns across countries and two phases of renewables diffusion. Clean energy consumption contributes to a decline of emissions more clearly in the expansion phase in France and Spain. However, this effect seems to be counteracted by the increases in emissions due to economic growth and non-renewable energy consumption. Therefore, clean energy consumption has not yet led to a decoupling of economic growth from emissions in France and Spain; in contrast, the findings for Sweden evidence such a decoupling due to the neutrality between economic growth and emissions. Generally, the findings show that despite the enormous growth of renewables and active mitigation policies, CO<sub>2</sub> emissions have not substantially decreased in selected countries or globally. Focused and coordinated policy action, not only at the EU level but also globally, is urgently needed to overhaul existing fossil-fuel economies into low-carbon economies and ultimately meet the relevant climate targets.</p>

Data from: Animal-mediated organic matter transformation: aquatic insects as a source of microbially bioavailable organic nutrients and energy

1. Animal communities are essential drivers of energy and elemental flow in ecosystems. However, few studies have investigated the functional role of animals as sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the subsequent utilization of that DOM by the microbial community. 2. In a small forested headwater stream, we tested the effects of taxonomy, feeding traits, and body size on the quality and quantity of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) excreted by aquatic insects. In addition, we conducted steady-state solute additions to estimate instream demand for labile C and compared it to the C excreted by invertebrates. 3. Individual excretion rates and excretion composition varied with body size, taxonomy, and feeding guild. The estimated average community excretion rate was 1.31 μg DOC· per mg insect dry weight (DW)-1·h-1 and 0.33 μg DON·mg DW-1·h-1 and individuals excreted DON at nearly twice the rate of 〖"NH" 〗_"4" ^"+" . This DOM was 2-5 times more bioavailable to microbial heterotrophs than ambient stream water DOM. 4. We estimated that the insect community, conservatively, excreted 1.62 mg of bioavailable DOC·m-2·h-1 and through steady-state additions measured an ambient labile C demand as 3.97±0.67 mg C·m-2·h-1. This suggests that insect-mediated transformation and excretion of labile DOC could satisfy a significant fraction (40±7%) of labile C demand in this small stream. 5. Collectively, our results suggest that animal excretion plays an essential functional role in transforming organic matter into microbially bioavailable forms and may satisfy a variable but significant portion of microbial demand for labile C and N.

Scripts and data for "The adequacy of time-series reduction for renewable energy systems"

<p>This upload provides the scripts and data used for the computations in the aforementioned working paper. To run these files, you will need to adjust the directory in the files &#39;testTimeSeries.jl&#39; and &#39;calli.bat&#39; to your local directory.</p> <p>The subfolder &#39;reduceTimeSeries&#39; contains all data and the script &#39;reduceTimeSeries.jl&#39; to reduce the full time-series. Reduction using the &#39;Gerbaulet&#39; method unfortunately requires a GAMS installation. The results of the reduction are already provided in the folder &#39;output&#39;.</p> <p>The subfolder &#39;testTimeSeries&#39; contains all data and the script &#39;testTimeSeries.jl&#39; to test the reduced time-series with a capacity expansion model. The &#39;comment&#39; and &lsquo;source&rsquo; columns in the AnyMOD.jl input files provide further documentation on the used input parameters. The labels &#39;lowDem&#39; and &#39;newDem&#39; relate to what was referred to conventional demand and demand with sector integration in the paper, respectively.</p>

Hummingbird torpor in context: duration, more than temperature, is the key to nighttime energy savings

Torpor is an important energy saving strategy in some small birds, but it has rarely been studied in natural field conditions. We compared torpor use across 43 wild-caught individuals of eight hummingbird species across sites with different natural temperature regimes. Most laboratory studies focus on the relationship between metabolic rate and temperature, but our aim was to evaluate what environmental factors most influence hummingbird nighttime energy management under natural conditions. We found that the probability of an individual entering torpor was weakly correlated with mass but unrelated to nighttime temperature and that hummingbirds at both warm, tropical and cooler, temperate sites used torpor. Energy savings in torpor were maximized as ambient temperatures approached a species' minimum body temperature, consistent with laboratory studies; energy savings ranged between 65-92% of energy per hour in torpor compared to normothermy. However, regardless of the degree of energy savings in torpor, variation in total nighttime energy expenditure was most significantly influenced by torpor bout duration. Lab studies largely assess the effect of temperature on torpor use, but our findings indicate that other environmental conditions are more important in determining hummingbirds' total nighttime energy expenditure under natural temperature cycles. Our results show that a small endotherm's nighttime energy management in its natural habitat is more affected by torpor bout duration, which is linked to photoperiod, than by temperature. This result suggests that in their natural environments hummingbirds are able to save energy in torpor across a range of nighttime temperatures, indicating that they may have sufficient physiological flexibility to tolerate climatic variation.

Data from: Upper atmosphere heating from ocean-generated acoustic wave energy

Colliding sea surface waves generate the ocean microbarom, an acoustic signal that may transmit significant energy to the upper atmosphere. Previous estimates of acoustic energy flux from the ocean microbarom and mountain/wind interactions are on the order of 0.01 to 1 mW/m2, heating the thermosphere by tens of degrees Kelvin per day. We captured up going ocean microbarom waves with a balloon borne infrasound microphone; the maximum acoustic energy flux was approximately 0.05 mW/m2. This is about half the average value reported in previous ground-based microbarom observations spanning eight years. The acoustic flux from the microbarom episode described here may have heated the thermosphere by several degrees Kelvin per day while the source persisted. We suggest that ocean wave models could be used to parameterize acoustically-generated heating of the upper atmosphere based on sea state.

Accurate and efficient representation of intramolecular energy in ab initio generation of crystal structures. Part I: Adaptive local approximate models

<p>The global search stage of Crystal Structure Prediction (CSP) methods requires a fine balance between accuracy and computational cost, particularly for the study of large flexible molecules. A major improvement in the accuracy and cost of the intramolecular energy function used in the CrystalPredictor II (Habgood, M., Sugden, I. J., Kazantsev, A. V., Adjiman, C. S. &amp; Pantelides, C. C. (2015).<em> J Chem Theory Comput</em> <strong>11</strong>, 1957-1969) program is presented, where the most efficient use of computational effort is ensured via the use of adaptive Local Approximate Model (LAM) placement. The entire search space of relevant molecule’s conformations is initially evaluated using a coarse, low accuracy grid. Additional LAM points are then placed at appropriate points determined via an automated process, aiming to minimise the computational effort expended in high energy regions whilst maximising the accuracy in low energy regions. As the size, complexity, and flexibility of molecules increase, the reduction in computational cost becomes marked. This improvement is illustrated with energy calculations for benzoic acid and the ROY molecule, and a CSP study of molecule XXVI from the sixth blind test (Reilly <em>et al.</em>, (2016).<em> Acta Cryst. B, accepted</em>.), which is challenging due its size and flexibility. Its known experimental form is successfully predicted as the global minimum. The computational cost of the study is tractable without the need to make unphysical simplifying assumptions. </p>
