Data from: Population-based screening for hepatitis C antibodies and active infection using a point-of-care test in a low prevalence area

Background. Data on the true prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in the general population is essential to health policies. We evaluated a program implementing free universal HCV screening using a non-invasive point-of-care test (POCT) (OraQuick-HCV rapid test) in oral fluid in an urban area in Valencia, South-Eastern Spain.

Methods. A cross-sectional study was performed during 2015-2017. Free HCV screening was offered by regular mail to 11,500 individuals aged 18 and over, randomly selected from all census residents in the Health Department. All responding participants filled in a questionnaire about HCV infection risk factors and were tested in their tertiary Hospital. In those with a positive POCT, results were confirmed by enzyme-immunoassay and HCV-RNA.

Results. 1,206 persons agreed to participate (response rate: 11.16%). HCV antibodies were detected in 19 (1.60%) cases (age-sex standardized rate: 1.31%; 95%CI: 0.82-2.07), but only 8 showed positive HCV-RNA (age-sex standardized rate: 0.56%; 95%CI: 0.28-1.14). The majority (89%) of the cases were born before 1965 and 74% had at least one known risk factor for HCV infection. All anti-HCV positive individuals were already aware of their infection, and no undiagnosed cases were detected. The performance of the POCT was excellent for detecting active infection.

Conclusions. These preliminary data suggest that HCV population screening with a POCT is feasible but, in our setting, mailing recruiting is not effective (11% response rate). The low prevalence of HCV antibodies and active infection in the participant population (with no new diagnoses made) suggests that, in our setting, underdiagnosis may be uncommon.

Files uploaded include the study database (Stata v.13) and the do.file of the study.

Impact of nonlinear hydrodynamic modelling on geometric optimisation of a spherical heaving point absorber

Due to the amount of iterative computation involved, researchers involved in geometric optimisation of wave energy devices typically employ linear hydrodynamic models. However, the exaggerated motion of wave energy devices, aided by energy maximising control action, challenges the assumptions upon which linear hydrodynamic modelling relies. Furthermore, the optimal device geometry is also sensitive to the nature of the energy-maximisation controller employed, and to the set of wave conditions over which the optimisation is carried out.

In order to focus on the essential issues, this study takes the simplest possible device for optimisation, a heaving sphere (with just one free parameter), but one which exhibits nonlinear hydrodynamic characteristics, due to the non-uniform cross-sectional area. The study examines the sensitivity to the inclusion of nonlinear Froude-Krylov forces. In addition, the sensitivity of the optimal device size to differences in the applied control algorithm is also studied, as are effects due to different representative sea state representations and performance evaluation criteria.

Normalized NMR integration values from the metabolomic analysis of Drosophila larvae extracts from 2 genotypes at 3 time points.

We measured the metabolites related to energy production using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). No alterations in the levels of carbohydrate stores or free amino acids were found between control and Sema1ai animals, corroborating the notion that the main metabolic changes are in the lipid metabolism. The exception is the glycolytic amino acid alanine (elevated in Sema1ai animals), confirming alterations in glycolysis. The levels of the ß-alanine amino acid are markedly reduced in 256 h AEL or 10.5-day-old Sema1ai animals, probably indicating muscle degeneration in the severely obese larvae that is consistent with the deteriorated state and reduced movement of the 10-day-old (256 hours) mutant larvae. Gluconeogenesis is stimulated by high lactate, and the concentration of lactate is higher in Sema1ai larvae than controls, though the difference is not statistically significant. Glycolysis is stimulated by glucose and inhibited by citrate, an early intermediate of the citric acid cycle. The increased citrate levels in the 10.5-day-old Sema1ai larvae suggest that glycolysis is lower at this age, consistent with the increased level of glucose in the severely obese larvae. The fact that both gluconeogenesis and glycolysis pathways are simultaneously enhanced in Sema1ai larvae support the hypothesis that the animals defecting in adiposity signaling are in a state of perceived energy insufficiency despite having sufficient energy stored.

Photorealistic and classified urban point cloud dataset (Helsinki)

The dataset contains a photorealistic and classified urban point cloud from Kalasatama region in Helsinki, Finland. Data was created using both terrestrial laser scanning (Leica RTC360) and UAV-based (DJI P4 Pro+) photogrammetry. 3D reconstruction was completed with RealityCapture and point cloud classification with TerraScan. The dataset is georeferenced in ETRS-TM35FIN (EPSG 3067) coordinate system. Work was done in Aalto University (The Research Institute of Measuring and Modeling for the Built Environment) with support from the City of Helsinki.

198 Spherical Codes in S2 for Smale's Problem 7 - 0 to 65 points - global minimums

Spherical Codes for 0 to 65 points on the S2 sphere
(1/log, 1/r, and 1/r^2 potentials)
---------------------------------------------------

Introduction >
------------

Smale's Problem #7 asks for an arrangement of n-points on a S2 sphere, such that the pairwise sum of all the reciprocals of the logarithm of the distance of any 2 points is minimized. This is equivalent to the J. J. Thomson Problem in physics, or minimizing the potential energy for all points. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smale%27s_problems

Smale asks for the global minimal solution, not just a local minimum solution which can be infinite in number.

In the spherical code datasets given, not only was the log force law answers found, but also the Coulomb attraction (1/r) and the inverse square law (1/r^2) force laws solutions for the points N=1..65 also found as either 40 digit or 80 digit floats.

40 digits of accuracy are given for the 3d configuration of the points for n-points under the 1/r (Coulomb) and 1/r^2 (inverse-square) force law while 80 digits of accuracy are given for the points under the 1/log law (JJ Thomson problem)

NOTE:

The spherical code is the floating point approximation of the answer which has been determined to be the root of an algebraic number (root of a monomial polynomial equation) 49 algebraic numbers have been successfully recovered but 109 remain to be found, however the spherical codes in the database ARE the optimal global solution (and proved mathematically numerically)

Description >
-----------

1.
