Supporting data for: Planted conifer seedling survival in a post-wildfire landscape in New Mexico: From experimental planting to predictive probabilistic surfaces
<p>Across the southwestern United States, high-severity wildfire is causing increasingly large patches of tree mortality, removing the seed sources required for the natural regeneration of these formerly conifer-dominated landscapes. Planting tree seedlings can accelerate succession and restore the ecosystem services that pre-wildfire forests provided, but in the semi-arid southwestern US, the survival of planted conifer seedlings is typically low. We present data on a seedling planting experiment within the footprint of the 2011 Las Conchas Fire in northern New Mexico, using microclimate variables and site-level topographic indices to determine which factors influence seedling survival of four conifer tree species. We then extrapolate these findings to the wider landscape for the most commonly planted species, producing a spatial projection of probabilistic seedling survival as a function of both site- and landscape-scale factors, using readily available topographic data. Both sets of analyses highlight the importance of landscape heterogeneity, quantifiable using topographic indices, in shaping microclimatic environments and affecting seedling survival in a predictable manner. Our results demonstrate that using these methods to guide future plantings may increase conifer tree seedling survival in high-severity post-wildfire landscapes.</p>

Experimental data for validation of a single-storey flexible double-skin façade system model
<p>Double skin façades are adaptive envelopes aiming at improving building energy use and comfort performance. Their adaptive principle relies on the dynamic management of the cavity’s ventilation flow and the shading device (when available). They can also be integrated with the environmental systems for heating, cooling, and ventilation. In most cases, though, the possible exploitation of the ventilation airflow is not fully enabled, as the adoption of only one or two possible airpath limits the possibility that this façade architecture offers and flexible interaction with the environmental systems is not planned. This work aims to develop, using an existing software tool for building energy simulation, a numerical model of a flexible double-skin façade module capable of fully exploiting the adaptive features of such envelope concept by switching between different cavity ventilation strategies. Leveraging on the Double Glass Facade component available in IDA ICE, a new model for a flexible double-skin façade module was developed, and its performance in replicating the thermophysical behaviours of such a dynamic system has been assessed by comparison with experimental data collected through a dedicated experimental activity using one the outdoor test cells of the TWINS facility in Torino (Italy). The accuracy of the predictions resulted in line with the performance obtained by the Double Glass Facade component to simulate conventional double-skin facades. By establishing a new archetype model to study the performance and optimal integration of a large class of double-skin façade modules, including fully flexible ones, this works demonstrated the possibility of modifying existing models in building energy simulation tools to study unconventional building envelope model solutions such as adaptive façade systems.</p>

Experimental Data for understanding melting and phase relations at the Mercury silicate mantle compositions as a function of temperature at 7 GPa
<p><span>High pressure-temperature experiments were performed at 7 GPa and 1700-2100 C using a cubic press to understand melting relations at the core-mantle boundary on Mercury. Mer8 was in the stability field of orthopyroxene whereas Mer15 first crystallized olivine. With cooling, both compositions reached a cotectic surface with olivine + orthopyroxene, followed by garnet and clinopyroxene. A sulfide phase (FeS + MgCaFeS) was present in all experiments.</span></p>

Experimental data from long-term elevated pCO2 exposure in Pacific herring. Datasets include measurements of enviromental treatment conditions, growth and developmental traits, and mortality data from a disease challenge.
<p>This study evaluated the effects of ocean acidification on the health, survival, fitness, and disease susceptibility of early life stage Pacific herring. Wild larvae were reared from hatching under three pCO2 treatments [low (~650 μatm), intermediate (~1,500 μatm), and high (~3,000 μatm)] to determine the effects of elevated pCO2 on larval growth, yolk consumption, and foraging capabilities and to evaluate how chronic exposure to elevated pCO2 affects long-term growth and maximum swimming speed. After prolonged exposure (98 d), we tested how elevated pCO2 experienced during development altered the susceptibility of juvenile Pacific herring to VHS following water-borne exposure to VHSV. This directory includes datasets for: 1) daily pH and temperature measurements from replicate rearing tanks; 2) carbon chemistry measurements from discrete seawater samples; 3) morphometric and feeding data for larval herring (1 - 16 days post hatch); 4) standard length measurements from larval and juvenile samples (1 - 98 days post hatch); 5) All dry mass measurements from larval and juvenile samples (1 - 98 days post hatch); 6) survival statistics for whole experiment ( 1- 98 days post hatch); 7) maximum swim speed measurements on juvenile herring; 8) disease challenge mortality and viral titer data; 8) a README file containing information on the dataset. </p>

<p>Experimental geometric, modulus, and differential growth raw data, measurments, and MATLAB codes from "The developmental mechanics of divergent buckling patterns<br>in the chick gut":</p> <p>Tissue buckling is an increasingly appreciated mode of morphogenesis in the embryo,<br>but it is often unclear how geometric and material parameters are molecularly determined<br>in native developmental contexts to generate diverse functional patterns. Here,<br>we study the link between differential mechanical properties and the morphogenesis<br>of distinct anteroposterior compartments in the intestinal tract—the esophagus, small<br>intestine, and large intestine. These regions originate from a simple, common tube<br>but adopt unique forms. Using measured data from the developing chick gut coupled<br>with a minimal theory and simulations of differential growth, we investigate divergent<br>lumen morphologies along the entire early gut and demonstrate that spatiotemporal<br>geometries, moduli, and growth rates control the segment-specific patterns of mucosal<br>buckling. Primary buckling into wrinkles, folds, and creases along the gut, as well<br>as secondary buckling phenomena, including period-doubling in the foregut and<br>multiscale creasing-wrinkling in the hindgut, are captured and well explained by<br>mechanical models. This study advances our existing knowledge of how identity leads to<br>form in these regions, laying the foundation for future work uncovering the relationship<br>between molecules and mechanics in gut morphological regionalization.</p>
