Response of atmospheric CO2 changes to the abyssal Pacific overturning during the last glacial cycle

<p>Despite its critical role in regulating the global climate and carbon cycle, the evolution of Pacific abyssal circulation has not been fully deciphered during the last glacial cycle. Using the oxygenation and benthic &delta;<sup>13</sup>C gradient records, tracers that are sensitive to ocean circulation rates, we establish the abyssal Pacific overturning conditions since ~90 ka. Our results indicate that the intensity of abyssal Pacific overturning is closely related to atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub>, with accelerated overturning during steps of CO<sub>2</sub> rise. Those depict a potential pathway of deep carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and highlight the critical roles of deep Pacific circulation in the global carbon cycle.</p>

AIRA (Atmospheric Rivers Identification Algorithm) input dataset and results

<p>This dataset contains&nbsp;the output of three regional climate simulations covering Europe for the period 1991-2010, used to apply Atmospheric Rivers Identification Algorithm (AIRA in Spanish), and the results of its performance. The simulations were carried out by the MAR group (www.um.es/gmar) of the University of Murcia, using the WRF-Chem model (v3.6.1). Each simulation includes different levels of aerosol interactions.</p>

Sonification of the atmospheric carbon record over the Holocene epoch

<p><span></span></p> <p>This piece is part of a collection of sound compositions called <em>Timescales</em>, which sonifies datasets spanning different time scales of the atmospheric carbon record. The Holocene is a geologic epoch which began approximately 11,700 years ago as the last glaciation ended. At the onset of the Holocene, atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations were approximately 265 ppm, and they remained below 280 ppm until the 18th century and the dawn of the industrial revolution. The <em>Holocene</em> composition creates an experience of listening to the stable climate of the Holocene epoch, and hearing the end of the Holocene and the beginning of the Anthropocene. </p>

Rapid shoaling of Aragonite Saturation Horizon (ASH) in the Indian Ocean: Influence of accumulation of anthropogenic CO2 and atmospheric pollutants

<p>This data set contains the various cruise data of Aragonite saturation depth in the Northern Indian Ocean.&nbsp;</p> <p>The shallowest aragonite saturation horizon (ASH) was observed in the Bay of Bengal (BoB; 219&plusmn;10 m) within the tropical Indian Ocean. The ASH shoaled at the rate of 6.3&plusmn;5 and 4.4&plusmn;3 m y<sup>-1</sup> in the past two and half decades in the BoB and Arabian Sea respectively. As a result, an increase in total alkalinity (TA) was observed at the rate of 0.5&plusmn;0.3 and 0.25&plusmn;0.2 mmol kg<sup>-1</sup> y<sup>-1</sup> at the depth of ASH in the BoB, and Arabian Sea respectively. The rapid shoaling of ASH in the BoB than the Arabian Sea may result from the higher accumulation of anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> due to the freshening of the upper ocean associated with an increase in river discharge/ precipitation and deposition of atmospheric pollutants leading to corrosion of the aragonite skeletal material. Under a business-as-usual scenario, aragonite-secreting organisms may not survive by the middle of this century in the BoB.</p>

Evaluation of a Partector Pro for atmospheric size distribution and number concentration measurements at an urban background site

<p>Number size distributions, total number concentrations and mean particle sizes have been measured for 70 days at an urban background site in M&uuml;lheim-Styrum, Germany with a handheld Partector Pro and a TSI mobility particle size spectrometer (MPSS). The aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of the Partecor Pro against the MPSS. The results show that the size distributions, measured with the Partector Pro agree with the MPSS mostly within &plusmn;25% for particle sizes below 113.5&nbsp;nm, whereas higher, systematic differences were observed for larger particles. The measurement accuracy was shown to be dependent on the geometric mean diameter and the geometric standard deviation of the aerosol. Best results were found for the most abundant size distributions with geometric mean particle diameters &ge;30&nbsp;nm and geometric standard deviations larger than 1.8. The total number concentration, measured by the Partector Pro was found to be in excellent agreement with the MPSS with a slope of the linear fit of 0.9977 and a regression coefficient of R&sup2;&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.9956. The agreement of the geometric mean particle diameter, determined with the Partector Pro and the MPSS was good, but moderately dependent on the particle size distribution. For mean particle sizes between 20&nbsp;nm and 50&nbsp;nm, the bias was within &plusmn;15%. Higher deviations of up to 30% were observed when the geometric mean particle sizes exceeded 70&nbsp;nm and when the geometric standard deviations exceeded approximately 2.7.</p>

Ground-based observation data from the article " Elucidating the impacts of various atmospheric ventilation conditions on local and transboundary ozone pollution patterns: A case study of Beijing, China"

<p>Hourly ground-level O<sub>3</sub>, CO and NO<sub>2</sub> observational data were retrieved from the China Environmental Monitoring Station, ultimately comprising 714 stations in North China and 35 stations in Beijing after data quality control. &nbsp;The hourly data from meteorological stations in China were obtained from the China Meteorological Data Service Centre, including observational values of such weather elements as temperature, pressure, relative humidity, wind, total cloud cover, and precipitation.</p>
