This Land is Your Land, This Could Be Marsh Land: Property Parcel Characteristics of Marsh Migration Corridors in Rhode Island, USA

<p>These data on Rhode Island property parcels and salt marsh migration projections support a project analyzing their overlap. Salt marshes, critical habitats offering many ecosystem services, are threatened by development, sea level rise (SLR) and other anthropogenic stressors that are projected to worsen. As seas rise, some salt marshes can migrate inland if there is adjacent, permeable, undeveloped land available. Facilitating marsh migration is necessary for coastal resilience efforts, but extensive coastal development can make finding suitable migration corridors challenging. This work seeks to characterize the changes in land use, ownership, and economic value at the property parcel level within projected 2050 marsh extent for the state of Rhode Island, USA. We find that most parcels currently containing salt marsh are publicly owned, whereas most adjacent parcels projected to contain new salt marsh in 2050 are privately owned. Additionally, parcels containing new marsh in 2050 have 47% higher per-hectare assessed values than parcels containing current marsh. We describe the locations and characteristics of parcels within migration corridors with the lowest per-hectare values that may be the most cost-effective for marsh conservation practitioners to protect. This study highlights the expanding land use types and landowner sets that will be involved in marsh conservation decisions, and the economic value of potential migration corridors where costly tradeoffs may be necessary to promote coastal resilience.</p>

Remote sensing of the light-obscuring smoke properties in real-scale fires using a photometric measurement method

First-principles insights into the electronic, optical, thermophysical, and mechanical properties of lead-free cubic novel Ba3SbBr3 perovskite

<p>Lead-free halide perovskites have emerged as a significant class of materials with immense<br> potential for solar cell synthesis. Among these materials, Ba3SbBr3, a halide novel perovskite,<br> exhibits remarkable efficiency and holds promise for solar cell applications. There are a lot of<br> physical properties, including its elasticity, electrical composition, bonding, thermophysical,<br> optoelectronic properties, and optical properties, that remain unexplored. In this study, we<br> employ advanced density functional theory-based computations to investigate and unveil the<br> previously unidentified physical properties of novel Ba3SbBr3. Our research encompasses a wide<br> range of analyses, covering mechanical stability, phonon dispersion properties, thermophysical<br> properties, elastic parameters, and bonding nature. By precisely analyzing the phonon dispersion<br> properties and applying the Born-Huang criteria, we demonstrated it as mechanically stable.<br> Moreover, our investigation demonstrates that Ba3SbBr3 exhibits favorable machinability and</p> <p>mechanical isotropy through the analysis of various elastic parameters. ELATE&rsquo;s three-<br> dimensional visualization and optical properties also show isotropic behavior in all directions.</p> <p>The electron charge density reveals the possession of the ionic bonding. Additionally, Ba3SbBr3<br> possesses a direct bandgap, which is essential for efficient optoelectronic performance. The study<br> also encompasses an exploration of the thermophysical properties including the melting<br> temperature, Debye temperature, Gr&uuml;neisen parameter, and thermal expansion coefficient. The<br> higher values observed in these properties highlight the material&#39;s enhanced mechanical stability,<br> thermal stability, and overall suitability for optoelectronic device applications. A large range of<br> photoconductivity and absorption coefficient indicates the suitability of its application in solar<br> cells. The comprehensive investigation conducted in this study contributes novel insights into the<br> unexplored physical properties of Ba3SbBr3, providing a solid foundation for future research<br> endeavors. The findings presented here serve as a valuable reference and inspiration for further<br> theoretical and experimental studies in this rapidly evolving field. The knowledge gained from<br> this research holds great promise for advancing the development of solar engineering and device<br> technologies.</p>

Data from: Significant differences in capsid properties and potency between AAV vectors produced in Sf9 and HEK293 cells

<p>For successful vector-based gene therapy manufacturing, the selected adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector production system must produce vector at sufficient scale. However, concerns have arisen regarding the quality of vector produced using different systems. In this study, we compared AAV serotypes 1, 8, and 9 produced by two different systems (Sf9/baculovirus and HEK293/transfection) and purified by two separate processes. We evaluated capsid properties including protein composition, post-translational modification, particle content profiles, and in vitro and in vivo vector potency. Vectors produced in the Sf9/baculovirus system displayed reduced incorporation of viral protein 1 and 2 into the capsid, increased capsid protein deamidation, increased empty and partially packaged particles in vector preparations, and an overall reduced potency. The differences observed were largely independent of the harvest method and purification process. These findings illustrate the need for careful consideration when choosing an AAV vector production system for clinical production.</p>

Effects of rhythm and accent patterns on tempo-keeping property of finger tapping

<p><span>Tempo of music performance is often accelerated irrespective of players' intention. Though the characteristics of the tempo deviation phenomenon have been investigated using a finger-tapping task, most such studies dealt with tapping with a fixed interval; few studies considered the effects of rhythm and accent, both important factors of music performance. Here, we asked how different rhythm and accent patterns affected the tempo-keeping property using a synchronization-continuation task paradigm: Participants were asked to keep tapping while reproducing the given rhythm/accent patterns designated by the target tones. Tapping tempo was significantly deviated depending on rhythm/accent patterns, but their magnitudes were only several percent in 150 seconds, much smaller than those in real music performance. We also ran experiments under the conditions that participants need to reproduce the accent patterns, but only feedback tones were modulated. These auditory modulations affected the tempo deviation, implying that not only motor process for producing the accents but also perceptual process induced by the accented auditory feedback influence the tempo maintenance of finger tapping. In sum, the present finding shows that sensorimotor processing for un-uniform finger tapping can disturb the long-term tempo-keeping process. We also discussed related topics based on the experimental findings.</span></p>

Data from: A hierarchical model for external electrical control of an insect, accounting for inter-individual variation of muscle force properties

<p>Cyborg control of insect movement is promising for developing miniature, high-mobility, and efficient biohybrid robots. However, considering the inter-individual variation of the insect neuromuscular apparatus and its neural control is challenging. We propose a hierarchical model including inter-individual variation of muscle properties of three leg muscles 14 involved in propulsion (retractor coxae), joint stiffness (pro- and retractor coxae), and stance-swing transition (protractor coxae and levator trochanteris) in the stick insect Carausius morosus. To estimate mechanical effects induced by external muscle stimulation, the model is based on the systematic evaluation of joint torques as functions of electrical stimulation parameters. A nearly linear relationship between the stimulus burst duration and generated torque was observed. This stimulus-torque characteristic holds for burst durations of up to 500ms, corresponding to the stance and swing phase durations of medium to fast walking stick insects. Hierarchical Bayesian modeling revealed that linearity of the stimulus-torque characteristic was invariant, with individually varying slopes. Individual prediction of joint torques provides significant benefits for precise cyborg control.</p>

Data from: Photodegradation modifies microplastic effects on soil properties and plant performance

<p>Microplastics in soil affect plant-soil systems depending on their shape and polymer type. However, previous research has not yet considered the effects of degraded plastics, which are the plastic materials actually present in the environment. We selected 8 microplastics representing different shapes (fibers, films and foams) and polymer types, and exposed them to UV-C degradation. Each microplastic was mixed with soil at a concentration of 0.4% (w/w). The phytometer Daucus carota grew in each pot. At harvest, soil properties and plant biomass were measured.</p> <p>Photodegradation altered microplastics physical and chemical properties, impacting plant-soil systems. Microplastics degradation effects on plant and soil were observed with fibers and foams, but there were negligible effects with films. The latter could be explained by the polymer structure of films and manufacturer's additives, potentially delaying their degradation.</p> <p>Degraded fibers increased soil respiration more than their non-degraded counterparts, as photodegradation increased the positive effects of fibers on soil water retention. The emergence of oxygenated groups during degradation may have increased the hydrophilicity of fibers, enhancing their ability to retain water. Degraded foams increased soil respiration, which could be related to the possible leaching of organic substances with lower partition coefficients, which may promote soil microbial activity.</p> <p>By contrast, degraded foams decreased soil aggregation, likely as degradation produced larger holes increasing their permeability. Also, the increase of hydrophilic molecules could have decreased soil particle cohesiveness. Degraded fibers and foams increased shoot and root mass as a result of microplastic effects on soil properties. Photodegraded microplastics affected root traits, which could be linked to microplastic effects on soil water status and plant coping strategies.</p>

CLARA Knowledge Graph of licensed educational resources (using RDF-star, Standard reification, Singleton properties, or Named graphs)

<p><strong>CLARA</strong><br>This deposit is part of the <a href="https://project.inria.fr/clara/">CLARA project</a>. The CLARA project aims to empower teachers in the task of creating new educational resources. And in particular with the task of handling the licenses of reused educational resources.</p> <p>The present deposit contains&nbsp;the RDF files created using an&nbsp;RDF mapping (<a href="https://rml.io/">RML</a>)&nbsp;and a mapper&nbsp;(<a href="https://github.com/morph-kgc/morph-kgc">Morph-KGC</a>). It also contains the files JSON used as input.&nbsp;The corresponding&nbsp;pipeline can be found on <a href="https://gitlab.univ-nantes.fr/clara/pipeline">Gitlab</a>. This study investigated the effect of magnesium (Mg) activation on extractable P (EP) and P sorption capacities of PL-derived biochars. Biochar was produced at 500–900 °C from PL activated with 0–1 M Mg. Three differentially aged PL feedstocks were evaluated (1-, 3–5-, and 7–9-year-old). </p>

Grain Boundary Engineering Enhances the Thermoelectric Properties of Y2Te3

<div> <p>The performance of thermoelectric materials is typically assessed using the dimensionless figure of merit, <em>zT</em>. Increasing <em>zT</em> is challenging due to the intricate relationships between electrical and thermal transport properties. This study focuses on Y<sub>2</sub>Te<sub>3</sub>-based thermoelectric materials, which are predicted to be promising for high-temperature applications due to their inherently low lattice thermal conductivity. A series of Y<sub>2+x</sub>Te<sub>3</sub> compositions with excess Y was synthesized to explore the effects on electronic and structural characteristics. Density functional theory calculations suggest that additional Y atoms increase charge carriers, thereby enhancing electrical conductivity and boosting thermoelectric performance. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the presence of excess Y reduces lattice volume and alters bonding structures. Furthermore, the addition of Bi significantly enhances the power factor by promoting the segregation of elemental Bi particles and the formation of Y-Bi-rich grain boundaries, which improve weighted mobility. This microstructural optimization leads to a fourfold increase in the Seebeck coefficient, resulting in a peak <em>zT</em> of 1.23 at 973 K and a predicted maximum conversion efficiency of 10.3% under a temperature difference of 673 K. These findings highlight the potential of Y<sub>2</sub>Te<sub>3</sub> for high-temperature thermoelectric applications and demonstrate the effectiveness of grain boundary engineering in enhancing thermoelectric performance.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>DOI: <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/aenm.202404243">10.1002/aenm.202404243</a></p> </div>
