Fastball pitching performance only slightly decreases after mobility impediment of the pelvis and trunk – Do (catch-up) compensation strategies come into play? (Dataset)

Kinematic data (position data) of eleven baseball pitchers who performed 25 fastballs recorded with a VICON motion capture system. The pickle-files (version 4.0) contain the position data of a static anatomical reference posture ('STATIC') and a fastball pitch motion ('PITCH') the landmarks attached to our subjects according to the modified plug-in-gait model1. The anatomical landmarks of the static posture and pitch motion are organised in Python dictionaries containing pandas DataFrames (version 1.1.0) with the X, Y and Z coordinates.

For more information about the data read the original paper2 and/or send an e-mail to corresponding author of the article: a.j.r.leenen@vu.nl.

References
1. Vicon R©. The density of crown-like structures in epicardial adipose tissue could play a role in cardiovascular diseases

Malavazos AE, Di Vincenzo A, Iacobellis G, Basilico S, Dubini C, Morricone L, Menicanti L, Luca T, Giordano A, Castorina S, Carruba M, Nisoli E, Del Prato S, Cinti S. The density of crown-like structures in epicardial adipose tissue could play a role in cardiovascular diseases. Eat Weight Disord. 2022 Oct;27(7):2905-2910. doi: 10.1007/s40519-022-01420-8. Epub 2022 Jun 9. PMID: 35678980.

Abstract

Purpose: The visceral fat of patients affected by abdominal obesity is inflamed, and the main histopathologic feature is the high density of crown-like structures (CLS). Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is a visceral fat of paramount importance for its relationships with coronary vessels and myocardium. Its inflammation in patients with abdominal obesity could be of clinical relevance, but histopathological studies on CLS density in EAT are lacking. This study aimed to assess the histopathology of EAT biopsies obtained from patients undergoing open-heart surgery.

Methods: We collected EAT biopsies from 10 patients undergoing open-heart surgery for elective coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) (n = 5) or valvular replacement (VR) (n = 5). Biopsies were treated for light microscopy and immunohistochemistry. We quantify the CLS density in each EAT sample.

Results: Despite all patients having abdominal obesity, in EAT samples, no CLS were detected in the VR group; in contrast, CLS were detected in the CABG group (about 17 CLS/104 adipocytes vs. 0.0 CLS/104 adipocytes, CABG vs. VR group, respectively). An impressive density of CLS (100 times that of other patients) was found in one patient (LS) in the CABG group that had a relevant anamnestic aspect: relatively rapid increase of weight gain, especially in abdominal adipose tissue, coincident with myocardial infarction.

Conclusions: CLS density could be an important predictive tool for cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, the LS case implies a role for timing in weight gain.

Level of evidence: No level of evidence; this is a basic science study.

Can I Play It? (CIPI) Dataset

Can I Play It? (CIPI) dataset from Combining piano performance dimensions for score difficulty classification

Description

Overview

Predicting the difficulty of playing a musical score plays a pivotal role in structuring and exploring score collections, with significant implications for music education. The automatic difficulty classification of piano scores, however, remains an unsolved challenge. This is largely due to the scarcity of annotated data and the inherent subjectiveness in the annotation process. The "Can I Play It?" (CIPI) dataset represents a substantial step forward in this domain, providing a machine-readable collection of piano scores paired with difficulty annotations from the esteemed Henle Verlag.

Dataset Creation

The CIPI dataset is meticulously assembled by aligning public domain scores with their corresponding difficulty labels sourced from Henle Verlag. This initial pairing was subsequently reviewed and refined by an expert pianist to ensure accuracy and reliability. The dataset is structured to facilitate easy access and interpretation, making it a valuable resource for researchers and educators alike.

Contributions and Findings

Our work makes two primary contributions to the field of score difficulty classification. Firstly, we address the critical issue of data scarcity, introducing the CIPI dataset to the academic community. Secondly, we delve into various input representations derived from score information, utilizing pre-trained machine learning models tailored for piano fingering and expressiveness. These models draw inspiration from musicological definitions of performance, offering nuanced insights into score difficulty.

Through extensive experimentation, we demonstrate that an ensemble approach—combining outputs from multiple classifiers—yields superior results compared to individual classifiers. This highlights the diverse facets of difficulty captured by different representations. Our comprehensive experiments lay a robust foundation for future endeavors in score difficulty classification, and our best-performing model reports a balanced accuracy of 39.5% and a median square error of 1.1 across the nine difficulty levels introduced in this study.

Access and Usage

The CIPI dataset, along with the associated code and models, is made publicly available to ensure reproducibility and to encourage further research in this domain. Users are encouraged to reference this resource in their work and to contribute to its ongoing development.

Citation

Ramoneda, P., Jeong, D., Eremenko, V., Tamer, N.
