Hydrothermal conditions modulate the impact of climate extremes on vegetation growth in the Northern Hemisphere

Aim

Climate extremes are becoming more frequent under global warming, with substantial repercussions for vegetation growth. The degree to which climate extremes increase the risk of high-impact events on vegetation growth is of high concern.

Location

Northern Hemisphere (north of 30° N).

Time Period

From 2001 to 2022.

Major Taxa Studied

Plants.

Methods

We utilized solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as proxies for vegetation growth and performed event coincidence and sensitivity analyses to attribute satellite-derived vegetation growth extremes to diverse climate extremes (extreme heat, cold, wet, and drought) in the Northern Hemisphere.

Results

Our results showed that extreme heat and cold were the main climatic extremes that induced positive and negative vegetation growth extremes north of 30° N, respectively, mainly in cold and humid ecosystems (boreal and temperate forests). Water-related extreme events accounted for less than one-third of vegetation extremes. The contribution of drought to positive vegetation growth extreme events (approximately 17%), mainly in cold and humid ecosystems, was even slightly higher than that of extreme wet (approximately 12%), which predominantly impacted relatively warm and arid ecosystems (croplands and temperate grasslands). We further identified potential climatic thresholds that could induce a reversal of vegetation growth responses to climate extremes and showed that the past two decades of warming and precipitation changes did not induce a shift in the main climatic drivers of vegetation extremes across northern ecosystems.

Main Conclusions

Our results emphasize the crucial role of background hydrothermal conditions in the attribution of vegetation growth extremes to diverse climate extremes across northern ecosystems and have substantial implications for predicting how Northern Hemisphere vegetation will respond to increasing climate extremes in the future.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria modulate induced corn defense against Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Common cutworm, Spodoptera litura is an important pest of corn causing significant crop yield loss. Synthetic insecticides have mostly been used to combat this pest, raising human and environmental health concerns. Plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) could compensate for or augment the harmful effects of agrochemicals. Herein, we aimed to assess whether PGPR-induced defenses in corn plants impact the host-plant selection behavior of S. litura. Headspace volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were analyzed using Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Larvae-fed inoculated corn exhibited lower weights and RGR than non-inoculated plants. Under choice experiments, PGPR-treated plants significantly reduced percentage leaf damage area and oviposition rate compared to untreated plants. VOC ratio emission varied significantly between control and PGPR treatments, which, in part, explains feeding and oviposition deterrence in PGPR-treated plants. The results demonstrate that PGPR inoculation can enhance corn resistance to S. litura, making it a promising candidate for crop protection strategies.

Data from: The non-coding RNA CcnA modulates the master cell cycle regulators CtrA and GcrA in Caulobacter crescentus

Bacteria are powerful models for understanding how cells divide and accomplish global regulatory programs. In Caulobacter crescentus, a cascade of essential master regulators supervises the correct and sequential activation of DNA replication, cell division and development of different cell types. Among them, the response regulator CtrA plays a crucial role coordinating all those functions. Here, for the first time we describe the role of a novel factor named CcnA, a cell cycle regulated ncRNA located at the origin of replication, presumably activated by CtrA and responsible for the accumulation of CtrA itself. In addition, CcnA may be also involved in the inhibition of translation of the S-phase regulator, GcrA, by interacting with its 5' untranslated region (5'-UTR). Performing in vitro experiments and mutagenesis, we propose a mechanism of action of CcnA based on liberation (ctrA) or sequestration (gcrA) of their ribosome-binding site (RBS). Finally, its role may be conserved in other alphaproteobacterial species, such as Sinorhizobium meliloti, representing indeed a potentially conserved process modulating cell cycle in Caulobacterales and Rhizobiales.

Neural correlates of top-down modulation of haptic shape versus roughness perception

Exploring an object’s shape by touch also renders information about its surface roughness. It has been suggested that shape and roughness are processed distinctly in the brain, a result based on comparing brain activation when exploring objects that differed in one of these features. To investigate the neural mechanisms of top-down control on haptic perception of shape and roughness, we presented the same multidimensional objects but varied the relevance of each feature. Specifically, participants explored two objects that varied in shape (oblongness of cuboids) and surface roughness. They either had to compare the shape or the roughness in an alternative-forced-choice-task. Moreover, we examined whether the activation strength of the identified brain regions as measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can predict the behavioral performance in the haptic discrimination task. We observed a widespread network of activation for shape and roughness perception comprising bilateral pre- and postcentral gyrus, cerebellum, and insula. Task-relevance of the object’s shape increased activation in the right supramarginal gyrus (SMG/BA40) and the right precentral gyrus (PreCG/BA44) suggesting that activation in these areas does not merely reflect stimulus-driven processes, such as exploring shape, but also entails top-down controlled processes driven by task-relevance. Moreover, the strength of the SMG/PreCG activation predicted individual performance in the shape but not in the roughness discrimination task. No activation was found for the reversed contrast (roughness > shape). We conclude that macrogeometric properties, such as shape, can be modulated by top-down mechanisms whereas roughness, a microgeometric feature, seems to be processed automatically.
