Global Carbon Budget 2022, surface ocean fugactiy of CO2 (fCO2) and air-sea CO2 flux of individual Global ocean biogechemical models and surface ocean fCO2-based data-products

Surface ocean fugacity of CO2 (fCO2) and air-sea CO2 flux data from individual Global Ocean Biogeochemistry Models (GOBMs) and surface ocean fCO2-based data-products (data-products). There are three types of files: (1) one file per fCO2-product with gridded fields and regionally-integrated CO2 flux time-series, (2) one file per GOBM with gridded fields, and (3) one file with the regionally-integrated time-series for the GOBMs.   Note: These provided gridded outputs from fCO2-based data-products and GOBMs are regridded datasets, without adjustments. The best estimates of the annual global ocean carbon sink, based on the native grids of data-products and GOBMs and with the adjustments described in the Global Carbon Budget 2022 (https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-14-4811-2022, section C3), are available in the Global Carbon Budget 2022 spreadsheet. The regionally-integrated time-series are as provided by the contributing groups, i.e. integrated from their native grids. In order to reproduce Figure 13 of the Global Carbon Budget 2022 paper (https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-14-4811-2022), the river flux adjustment needs to be added to the CO2 flux estimated from the data-products (North: 0.17 GtC yr-1, Tropics: 0.16 GtC yr-1, South: 0.32 GtC yr-1, see GCB 2022 paper, section 2.4.1). The sum of the regional fluxes may differ from the global estimates as reported in the GCB spreadsheet, because adjustments were applied only for global fluxes. What is in the files? (1) The files for the fCO2-based data-products contain the following variables (temporal resolution: monthly): fgco2_reg: Regionally integrated air-sea CO2 flux (positive downward), monthly, for regions: north, tropics, south fgco2: Flux density of the total air-sea CO2 flux (positive downward), dimensions: time, latitude, longitude sfco2: Surface ocean fCO2, dimensions: time, latitude, longitude area: Area per pixel, dimensions: latitude, longitude area_reg: Total surface ocean area covered by native grid, for global, north, tropics, south (2) The files for the GOBMs contain the following fields, for simulation A (‘contemporary simulation’, including effects of rising CO2, climate change and variability) and simulation B (‘control simulation’, constant CO2, no climate change and variability). Temporal resolution: monthly fgco2: Flux density of the total air-sea CO2 flux (positive downward), dimensions: time, latitude, longitude sfco2: Surface ocean fCO2, dimensions: time, latitude, longitude area: Area per pixel, dimensions: latitude, longitude (3) One file ‘GCB-2022_OceanModel_RegionalBreakdown_1959-2021.nc’ with the regionally-integrated CO2 flux time-series for all individual GOBMs, and for simulations A and B. Air quality trends for Berlin and Hamburg (2021-2022)

Air pollution constitutes the greatest environmental challenge in Europe (EEA, 2023). In the context of CALLISTO, an EU-funded project, and most specifically its pilot use case "Sensor Journalism", air pollution is studied from a journalistic point of view through an integrated solution comprised of multiple data visualisation tools. One of these tools is CALLISTO's Geospatial Business Intelligence (GeoBI) tool, which provides various visualisations of primarily air quality data and its purpose is to enable journalists identify air quality events and trends to build their stories. The GeoBI tool harnesses data from various sources (e.g., official ground-based monitoring stations, low-cost sensing networks, satellites, social media), providing various visual elements (e.g., figures, maps, pipe graphs, etc.) on historical, near real-time and forecast air quality data, and has the ability to extract and interpret the data in some extent. For example, it takes into consideration the concentrations of the available air pollutants to display an Air Quality Index accompanied with a characterisation of the air quality in a specific location. Further data sources on socio-economic and environmental factors (e.g., roadworks data) are also explored. The files provided here include trends of concentrations of specific air pollutants for the areas of Berlin and Hamburg during 2021 and 2022 (graphs & csv data). Air quality, soil moisture, green roof moisture and weather data from Meetjestad

Soil moisture sensors were developed by citizen science collective Meet je Stad (Measure your City). Measure your City was started in 2015 by inhabitants of the City of Amersfoort, with the goal of measuring climate related indicators. To be able to do so, collaboration was sought with the City of Amersfoort (COA), the local Water Authority and the University of Applied Sciences of Amsterdam. For the first three years the initiative focused on measuring temperature and humidity. Importantly, citizens develop their own research questions, analyze the data together with professionals and discuss potential implications. By doing so, the collective uses citizen science to spread knowledge on both technology and climate change in the most grass-roots manner possible. Within the SCOREwater project, Measure your City was asked to expand measurements with soil moisture measurements and additional temperature and humidity sensors. An important note here is that Measure your City develops their own sensors, has developed their own data platform and uses its own gateways purchased from the Things Network. As a result, much effort is put into constructing sensors that are reliable, low-maintenance and accurate. The latter is important for the City of Amersfoort as well, which intends to not only work on shared knowledge and understanding, but also use the data for policy making. To do so the data has to be reliable. By deploying both these sensors and purchasing company-built sensors, we can compare the data to assess how reliable the Measure your City sensors are. The Measure your City can also be deployed on green roofs to measure soil moisture. Whereas the soil moisture sensor measures soil moisture on two depths (10 centimeter and 40 centimeter), the sensor on a roof only measures soil moisture on one depth. In addition to soil moisture, Measure your City also measures air temperature and relative humidity. Some sensors also measure air quality (particle matter).
