Digitized geological and geophysical data from the Po Plain and the northern Adriatic Sea (north Italy) collected from public sources.

(2023). Subsurface geological and geophysical data from the Po Plain and the northern Adriatic Sea (north Italy). Earth System Science Data Discussions, 15, n. 9,&nbsp; 4261-4293, doi: 10.5194/essd-15-4261-2023</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>This database comprises subsurface geological and geophysical data from the Po Plain and the northern Adriatic Sea (north Italy). We realized the database by collecting, revising, and digitizing data, originally in raster format, from public sources. These data have been then used to reconstruct the overall subsurface 3D architecture and to extract the physical properties of the subsurface geological units.</p><p>The data have a common geographical system: WGS 84/UTM zone 32N; EPSG: 32632.</p><p>The database contains borehole information from 160 deep wells (i.e., wellhead coordinates, rotary table elevation, measured depth, true depth, total depth and deviation survey) and digitized Spontaneous Potential, Gamma Ray, and Sonic logs. Five horizons were digitized from 61 geological cross-sections and from 10 isobath maps that roughly correspond to the boundaries of units showing different lithological properties and with different mechanical properties. The horizons are, from the oldest to the youngest: the top of the magnetic basement, the top of the carbonate succession, the base of the Pliocene, the base of the Calabrian and the base of recent continental deposits. In addition, the gridded surfaces of the 3D geological model are available.</p><p>We organized the database into two groups: "primitive data" and "derived data".</p><p>Primitive data are the result of the digitization of public data. The database of the primitive data is formed by the main horizons reported in the geological cross-sections, the isobaths of the main geological surfaces, the well locations, comprised their trajectory along depth, lithological and stratigraphical information, and geophysical logs from composite well logs. Well data include specific sets of well logs aimed to geological/mechanical characterization of the geological units (e.g., Spontaneous Potential log, Resistivity log, Gamma Ray log, and Sonic log).</p><p>Derived data consist of two datasets: i) the primitive isobaths maps and geological cross-sections data that have been filtered and verified after a data accuracy analysis performed to unravel discrepancies in the interpretation of the subsurface geological horizons; ii) a set of regional surfaces of the main geological units of the Po Plain subsurface. These surfaces were generated by interpolating the filtered primitive data and without considering the fault occurrence/displacements.</p><p>Primitive and derived data are provided in delimited text file format organized according to the data type (i.e., well, geological cross-section, map and gridded surface). The format and the organization of data are explained in the related "readme" file presents within each data folder.</p><p>Our database represents a collection of the main published works regarding the Po Plain. Detailed studies related to specific sectors of the Po Plain might not be present in our database.</p><p>Further details about the data processing and organization are given in the related manuscript.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

Data from: A genome-wide approach to the phylogeography of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis in the Adriatic and the Black Seas

Connectivity between populations shapes the genetic structure of species being crucial for an effective management of environmental resources. Genetic approaches can provide indirect measures of connectivity, allowing the identification of genetically differentiated - unconnected - populations. In this study, we applied a 2b-RAD approach based on hundreds of polymorphic loci to provide the first detailed insight into the population genomics of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis in part of its native geographical range. We sampled 19 localities within the Mediterranean and Black Seas, and analyzed a total of 478 samples. We detected strong differences between the two seas, whereas no differences were found between samples from the Western and Central Mediterranean and within Western Mediterranean samples. In the Central Mediterranean a significant differentiation emerged comparing Central Adriatic samples with those from South Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Furthermore, an East-to-West genetic structuring was found in the Central Adriatic Sea, which was not present in the Southern Adriatic and Ionian Seas. These results possibly reflect the local oceanography, with a Middle Adriatic gyre unable to prevent genetic differentiation in this species, and a Southern Adriatic gyre that effectively mixes propagules in Southern areas. In the Black Sea, no signal of genetic structure was found, although samples were spaced at similar distances as in the Adriatic-Ionian area. Genetic connectivity patterns of M. galloprovincialis reveal peculiar species-specific features respect to other species with similar larval duration, suggesting caution in using genetic connectivity data of single species in defining conservation units. We recommend of using genetic connectivity data of many species representing a variety of life history traits, and we call for new investigations using high resolution population genomics, particularly in the Black Sea, to understand if areas separated by hundreds of kilometers can be considered genetically connected as mussels' data suggest. This information will be critical to ensure "a well-connected system of protected areas" according to Aichi Target 11 of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Scale dependence of drilling predation in the Holocene of the northern Adriatic Sea across benthic habitats and nutrient regimes

<p>Predation has strongly shaped past and modern marine ecosystems, but the scale dependency of patterns in drilling predation, the most widely used proxy for predator-prey interactions in the fossil record, is a matter of debate. To assess the effects of spatial and taxonomic scale on temporal trends in the drilling frequencies (DF), we analyzed Holocene molluscan assemblages of different benthic habitats and nutrient regimes from the northern Adriatic shelf in a sequence stratigraphic context. Although it has been postulated that low predation pressures facilitated the development of high-biomass epifaunal communities in the eastern, relatively oligotrophic portion of the northern Adriatic shelf, DFs reaching up to 30-40% in the studied assemblage show that drilling predation levels are comparable to those typical of Late Cenozoic ecosystems. DFs tend to increase from the transgressive systems tract (TST) into the highstand systems tract (HST) at the local scale, reflecting an increase in water depth by 20-40 m and a shift from infralittoral to circalittoral habitats over the past 10,000 years. As transgressive deposits are thicker at shallower and highstand deposits are thicker at deeper locations, a regional increase in DFs from TST to HST is evident only when these differences are accounted for. The increase in DF towards the HST can be recognized at the level of total assemblages, classes and few abundant and widespread families, but it disappears at the level of genera and species because of their specific environmental requirements, leading to uneven or patchy distribution in space and time.</p>

GNSS and levelling data to detect ground deformation along the Upper Adriatic Sea coastal area (Italy)

<p>This geodetic dataset includes both Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and levelling data. GNSS measurements were recorded by continuous stations managed by public institutions and private companies, while levelling measurements were obtained by the use of benchmarks managed by ENI S.p.A. &nbsp;</p> <p>This dataset is used in the manuscript entitled &quot;Multi-technique geodetic detection of onshore and offshore subsidence along the Upper Adriatic Sea coasts&quot; to estimate deformation around the littoral area of Ravenna (Italy) (Polcari et al., 2022). The GNSS data, from permanent stations RAVE, PCTA, FIUN and ANGA&nbsp;covers the period from around 1998 to 2018. The files in .csv format contain displacement time series with respect to the Adria-fixed reference frame and for PCTA, FIUN and ANGA also with respect to RAVE GNSS station.</p> <p>The levelling data refer to campaigns that took place in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2014, and 2017.&nbsp; The file named <em>Original.csv</em> contains the original height measurements for each benchmark, while the file named <em>Ref.RAVE.csv</em> contains the mean velocity and the displacement calculated for all 147 benchmarks. In this last file the data were scaled with respect to the mean velocity of the benchmark located near the RAVE station.</p>

Assessment of connectivity patterns of the marbled crab Pachygrapsus marmoratus in the Adriatic and Ionian seas through combination of genetic data and Lagrangian simulations

<p>Seascape connectivity studies, informing the level of exchange of individuals between populations, can provide extremely valuable data for marine population biology and conservation strategy definition. Here we used a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the connectivity of the marbled crab (Pachygrapsus marmoratus), a high dispersal species, in the Adriatic and Ionian basins. A combination of genetic analyses (based on 15 microsatellites screened in 314 specimens), Lagrangian simulations (obtained with a biophysical model of larval dispersal) and individual-based forward-time simulations (incorporating species-specific fecundity and a wide range of population sizes) disclosed the realized and potential connectivity among eight different locations, including existing or planned Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Overall, data indicated a general genetic homogeneity, after removing a single outlier locus potentially under directional selection. Lagrangian simulations showed that direct connections potentially exist between several sites, but most sites did not exchange larvae. Forward-time simulations indicated that a few generations of drift would produce detectable genetic differentiation in case of complete isolation as well as when considering the direct connections predicted by Lagrangian simulations.Overall, our results suggest that the observed genetic homogeneity reflects a high level of realized connectivity among sites, which might result from a regional metapopulation dynamics, rather than from direct exchange among populations of the existing or planned MPAs. Thus, in the Adriatic and Ionian basins, connectivity might be critically dependent on unsampled, unprotected, populations, even in species with very high dispersal potential like the marbled crab. Our study pointed out the pitfalls of using wide-dispersing species with broad habitat availability when assessing genetic connectivity among MPAs or areas deserving protection and prompts for the careful consideration of appropriate dispersing features, habitat suitability, reproductive timing and duration in the selection of informative species.</p>
