Total Arctic sea ice extent during the Instrumental Era
<p>This dataset contains six different reconstructions of total Arctic sea ice extent during the Instrumental Era. These reconstructions were produced using data assimilation of climate model output and temperature observations. The prior ensembles were drawn from climate model output from both the Community Climate System Model version 4 (CCSM4, Last Millennium simulation Landrum et al., 2013) and Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-ESM-P, Last Millennium simulation Taylor et al., 2012). Temperature observations were drawn from three different products: 25 HadCRUT, Berkeley Earth (BE, Rohde et al., 2013), and NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies 26 (GISTEMP, Hansen et al., 2010). <p>The following is a summary of processed model output data from a series of HiLAT model runs. A description of the model runs and visualization of model output and analysis can be found in the accompanying manuscript.</p> <p>Gibson, G.A., Weijer, W., Jeffery, N. and Wang, S (2020) Relative impact of sea ice and temperature changes on Arctic marine production. Atlantic walrus signal latitudinal differences in the long-term decline of sea ice-derived carbon to benthic fauna in the Canadian Arctic
<p>Climate change is altering the biogeochemical and physical characteristics of the Arctic marine environment, which impacts sea ice algal and phytoplankton bloom dynamics and the vertical transport of these carbon sources to benthic communities. Little is known about whether the contribution of sea ice-derived carbon to benthic fauna and nitrogen cycling has changed over multiple decades in concert with receding sea ice. We combined compound-specific stable isotope analysis of amino acids with highly-branched isoprenoid diatom lipid biomarkers using archived (1982-2016) tissue of benthivorous Atlantic walrus to examine temporal trends of sea ice-derived carbon, nitrogen isotope baseline and trophic position of Atlantic walrus at high- and mid-latitudes in the Canadian Arctic. Associated with an 18% sea ice decline in the mid-Arctic, sea ice-derived carbon contribution to Atlantic walrus decreased by 75% suggesting a strong decoupling of sea ice-benthic habitats. In contrast, a nearly exclusive amount of sea ice-derived carbon was maintained in high-Arctic Atlantic walrus (98% in 1996 and 89% in 2006) despite a similar percentage in sea ice reduction. Nitrogen isotope baseline or the trophic position of Atlantic walrus did not change over time at either location. These findings indicate spatial differences in the restructuring of carbon energy sources utilized by Atlantic walrus and their benthic prey and in turn, a change in Arctic marine ecosystem functioning between sea ice-pelagic-benthic habitats.</p>
Arctic sea ice snow melt onset dates from the Advanced Horizontal Range Algorithm, version 5 (1979 - 2022)
<h2>Data</h2><p>This data set includes one NetCDF (.nc) file containing the full set of annual Arctic sea ice melt onset dates and statistical summaries for the 1979 - 2022 period derived with the Advanced Horizontal Range Algorithm (AHRA) V5. The remaining .png files include browse images of each data layer contained within the primary NetCDF file.</p><p>A full description of the data provided herein can be found in the following publication: </p><p>Bliss, A. Snow Melt Onset Over Arctic Sea Ice from SMMR and SSM/I-SSMIS Brightness Temperatures, Version 5
This data set includes yearly snow melt onset dates over Arctic sea ice derived from Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR), Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I), and the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) brightness temperature measurements. The data are gridded to the 25 km Northern Hemisphere Polar Stereographic projection and available from 1979 through 2022. One browse image is available for each year. This data set also contains value-added statistics for each grid cell, including: mean melt onset date, latest (maximum) melt onset date, earliest (minimum) melt onset date, range of melt onset dates (the difference between maximum and minimum onset dates), and the standard deviation of melt onset dates. One browse image is also provided for each statistical field.
CAR LEADEX Arctic Sea Ice and Tundra BRDF Measurements L1 V2 (CAR_LEADEX_BRDF) at GES DISC
CAR LEADEX mission measured bidirectional reflectance functions for four common arctic surfaces: snow covered sea ice, melt season sea ice, snow covered tundra, and tundra shortly after snowmelt. The measurements show how the reflectance differs amongst the mentioned arctic surfaces and provides insights into the variability of albedo in the arctic.This data set consists of observations made with the CAR instrument and includes values for bidirectional reflectance factor at varying spectral bands.

It contains weekly sea ice motion vectors, as well as browse images representing the weekly data. Weekly sea ice motion vectors are derived from near-real-time SSMI/S data sets, IABP buoys, and NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis forecasts.

Data from: Massive phytoplankton blooms under Arctic sea ice
Phytoplankton blooms over Arctic Ocean continental shelves are thought to be restricted to waters free of sea ice. Here, we document a massive phytoplankton bloom beneath fully consolidated pack ice far from the ice edge in the Chukchi Sea, where light transmission has increased in recent decades because of thinning ice cover and proliferation of melt ponds. The bloom was characterized by high diatom biomass and rates of growth and primary production. Evidence suggests that under-ice phytoplankton blooms may be more widespread over nutrient-rich Arctic continental shelves and that satellite-based estimates of annual primary production in these waters may be underestimated by up to 10-fold.
Finite Volume Community Ocean Model-based Arctic Ocean Forecast System: A Comprehensive Assessment of Sea Ice Forecast Results without Data Assimilation
<p>The dataset contains sea ice forecast results from the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model-based Arctic Ocean Forecast System (FVCOM-AOFS) for the period 2019-2020. The output result of the system is presented as daily mean values.</p><p>Each netCDF file within the dataset includes the following variables: lon, lat, lonc, latc, aice, vice, uuice, and vvice. Specifically, the variables of lon and lat represent the longitude and latitude of the unstructured triangular grid. The variables of lonc and latc represent the longitude and latitude of the unstructured triangular cell. The variables of aice and vice indicate sea ice concentration and sea ice thickness. The variables of uuice and vvice indicate eastward and northward sea ice drift velocity. The scalars including aice and vice use lon and lat coordinates, and the vectors including uuice and vvice use lonc and latc coordinates. </p>
Dataset for "Roles of marine biota in the formation of atmospheric bioaerosols, cloud condensation nuclei, and ice-nucleating particles over the North Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea, and Arctic Ocean"
<p>Atmospheric and oceanic observations were conducted over the North Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea, and Arctic Ocean during a cruise (MR19-03C) in early autumn of 2019. The dataset includes trace gases, chemical composition, fluorescent particles in the ambient and bioindicators in the surface seawater, observed along the ship track (time stamp and coordinates are included).
