Data from: Predation, metabolic priming and early life-history rearing environment affect the swimming capabilities of growth hormone transgenic rainbow trout
The period of first feeding, when young salmonid fishes emerge from natal stream beds, is one fraught with predation risk. Experiments conducted in semi-natural stream mesocosms have shown that growth hormone transgenic salmonids are at greater risk of predation than their non-transgenic siblings, due partly to the higher metabolic demands associated with transgenesis, which force risky foraging behaviours. This raises questions as to whether there are differences in the swim-performance of transgenic and non-transgenic fishes surviving predation experiments. We tested this hypothesis in wild-origin rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) that were reared from first feeding in semi-natural stream mesocosms characterized by complex hydrodynamics, the presence of predators and oligotrophic conditions. Using an open-flume raceway, we swam fish and measured their capacity for burst-swimming against a sustained flow. We found a significant genotype effect on burst-performance, with transgenic fish sustaining performance longer than their wild-type siblings, both in predator and predator-free stream segments. Importantly, this effect occurred before differences in growth were discernable. We also found that mesocosm-reared fish had greater burst-performance than fish reared in the controlled hatchery environment, despite the latter being unexposed to predators and having abundant food. Our results suggest a potential interaction between predation and metabolic priming, which leads to greater burst capacity in transgenic trout.

Survey: Motivation, capability and opportunity for food safety messages

Background

A significant part of foodborne infections is caused by food eaten at home, and food safety messages are given to help consumers mitigate risk. The World Health Organisation (WHO) "Five Keys to Safer Food", developed about 20 years ago has been used with success worldwide to provide general advice on how to prepare food safely.

Scope and Approach

In this commentary, we discuss how food safety messages could be updated using a holistic approach built on implementation science, considering new food consumption patterns and insights from natural and social sciences. A stepwise approach for developing and evaluating food safety messages, performed in the European project SafeConsume, is presented. The top pathogen-food combinations associated with foodborne disease in Europe combined with common consumer practices were used to identify behaviours potentially leading to illness. Food safety messages were suggested and evaluated for understanding as well as capability, opportunity and motivation in an expert survey.

Key Findings and Conclusions

Overall, the food safety topics prioritised overlapped with those from WHO. The opportunity and motivation for changing behaviour, (e.g. choose pasteurised egg) were identified as important restrictions for uptake of messages. Also, the large variation in basic terminology, such as "thoroughly cooked" is a challenge. Therefore, to enhance the capability, there is a need to be very specific, without excluding other safe alternatives or making lengthy explanations. The food safety messages suggested by the expert group were evaluated as more likely to the implemented among domestic cooks and resulting in safer practices than corresponding WHO messages.

Constructing an Indicator System for Cultural Sustainability in Chinese Cities under the Objective of Urban Renewal and Capability Measurement

This paper adopts the top-down approach based on the interpretation and connotation of the seven first-level and 22 second-level indicators formulated above. At the same time, we are designing the tertiary indicator database in strict accordance with the principles of scientific, systematic, and adaptive construction of the indicator system. After deliberation and modification according to the actual situation, 179 three-level indicators are formulated in Appendix 1 for details.
