Darley Dale Sandstone AE Dataset (Confinement 20 MPa)

AE data (.seg2 files) contain AE recordings from all 12 sensors (recloc.mat) for individual events. These events have been picked (pktimes_ml.mat) and located using a Time Difference of Arrival methodology (sourceloc_ml.mat).

Darley dale sandstone (DDS) is a brown-yellow, feldspathic sandstone with a modal composition of quartz (69%), feldspars (26%), clay (3%) and mica (2%) (Heap et al., 2009). Previous studies report a connected porosity of 13.3% ± 0.8% with grain sizes varying from 100-800 µm (Zhu & Wong, 1997). The unconfined compressive strength is 160 MPa (Baud & Meredith, 1997). At the scale analysed here, no distinct layering or laminations were present. A cylindrical rock sample was cored using a diamond tipped hollow coring drill to prepare a 4 cm diameter sample that was then trimmed to 10 cm length with a diamond saw. End faces are accurately ground using a lathe fitted with a cross-cutting diamond grinding disk with surfaces flat and parallel to within 0.01 mm.

Deformation was performed using a conventional triaxial deformation cell installed at the Rock Mechanics Laboratory, University of Portsmouth (Fazio, 2017). The sample presented here was deformed until brittle failure at a confining pressure of 20 MPa at a constant deformation rate of 3.6 mm/hr. Experimentation was performed under fully drained conditions to avoid any fluid-driven effects on AE frequency content (Benson et al., 2010). These environmental conditions ensure that a high number of AE are obtained and any time-dependent variations in the signal waveform are predominantly due to the scattering effects of microfractures, thus allowing for the sampling of a diverse range of deformation structure. Axial displacement is measured with a non-contact Eddy Displacement system mounted to the apparatus. It comprises of three sensors that accurately (sub-micron) measure the distance to a target steel plate attached to the driving piston. These readings are averaged and are used to set the target deformation rate via feedback to an axial stress intensifier. Differential stress (MPa) and sample strain (%) are in attached .txt files.

For AE data acquisition the protocol of Benson et al. (2007) was followed. The dry sample was positioned inside an engineered rubber jacket fitted with ports for an array of twelve 1 MHz single-component Piezo-Electric Transducers (PZTs, model PAC Nano30) were embedded. These sensors have a relatively flat frequency response between 125-750 KHz. Sensor output is connected to preamplifiers set to 40 dB, focusing on data quality over quantity. An ITASCA-Image “Milne” recorder operate in a standard ‘trigger’ model, downloading all twelve channels when any single channel passes a set 100 mV threshold (e.g. Gehne, 2018).

Heap, M. Fear of COVID-19 during confinement in Mauritius: a survey-based study

Background: Fear has been a common response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic throughout the world. In Mauritius, the outbreak of COVID-19 has been an exceptional occurrence requiring stringent confinement of the population. In this study we have explored people's reactions to COVID-19 during confinement, with emphasis on fear and the impact of news on the level of fear.

Methods: An anonymized online survey was carried out during confinement. Participation was voluntary. Participants reported fear level on a scale from 1 to 10, where no fear scored 1 and maximum fear scored 10. Participants reported the impact of news on their fear level on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 represented no impact and 10 represented maximum impact. Participants reported the status of their information about COVID-19 on a scale of 1 to 10.

Results: The self-rated level of fear during confinement had a mean of 5.09 with 95%CI [4.70, 5.47]. This increased to a mean of 6.39 with 95%CI [6.00-6.78] at the prospect of confinement being lifted. The difference was statistically significant (paired-sample T-test, p<0.05). With regard to the impact of news on fear of COVID-19, the mean for local news was 5.97 with 95%CI [5.59, 6.34] whereas that of worldwide news was 6.86 with 95%CI [6.50, 7.23]. Worldwide news had a more significant impact (paired-sample T-test, p<0.05). The information score about COVID-19 had a mean of 5.12 with 95%CI [4.71, 5.53].

Conclusions: Participants experienced a moderate level of fear of COVID-19 during confinement which increased at the prospect of confinement being lifted, implying that people felt safer during confinement. Their fear was influenced more by international news than by local news. Overall participants reported that they were moderately well informed about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Keywords: COVID-19, fear, confinement, pandemic, impact of news, Mauritius

Data from: Intricate trophic links between threatened vertebrates confined to a small island in the Atlantic Ocean

Trophic networks in small isolated islands are in a fragile balance, and their disturbance can easily contribute towards the extinction vortex of species. Here we show, in a small Atlantic island (Raso) in the Cabo Verde Archipelago, using DNA metabarcoding, the extent of trophic dependence of the Endangered giant wall gecko Tarentola gigas on endemic populations of vertebrates, including one of the rarest bird species of the world, the Critically Endangered Raso lark Alauda razae. We found that the Raso lark (27%), Iago sparrow Passer iagoensis (12%), Bulwer's petrel Bulweria bulwerii (15%) and the Cabo Verde shearwater Calonectris edwardsii (10%) are the most frequent vertebrate signatures found in the faeces of the giant wall gecko. This work provides the first integrative assessment of their trophic links, an important issue to be considered for the long-term conservation of these small and isolated island ecosystems.

Data from: Genetic signs of multiple colonization events in Baltic ciscoes with radiation into sympatric spring and autumn-spawners confined to early post-glacial arrival

Presence of sympatric populations may reflect local diversification or secondary contact of already distinct forms. The Baltic cisco (Coregonus albula) normally spawns in late autumn, but in a few lakes in Northern Europe sympatric autumn and spring- or winter-spawners have been described. So far, the evolutionary relationships and taxonomic status of these main life history forms have remained largely unclear. With microsatellites and mtDNA sequences, we analyzed extant and extinct spring- and autumn-spawners from a total of 23 Swedish localities, including sympatric populations. Published sequences from Baltic ciscoes in Germany and Finland, and Coregonus sardinella from North America were also included together with novel mtDNA sequences from Siberian C. sardinella. A clear genetic structure within Sweden was found that included two population assemblages markedly differentiated at microsatellites and apparently fixed for mtDNA haplotypes from two distinct clades. All sympatric Swedish populations belonged to the same assemblage, suggesting parallel evolution of spring-spawning rather than secondary contact. The pattern observed further suggests that postglacial immigration to Northern Europe occurred from at least two different refugia. Previous results showing that mtDNA in Baltic cisco is paraphyletic with respect to North American C. sardinella were confirmed. However, the inclusion of Siberian C. sardinella revealed a more complicated pattern, as these novel haplotypes were found within one of the two main C. albula clades and were clearly distinct from those in North American C. sardinella. The evolutionary history of Northern Hemisphere ciscoes thus seems to be more complex than previously recognized.
