Data from: Quantitative analysis of the ecological dominance of benthic disaster taxa in the aftermath of the end-Permian mass extinction

The end-Permian mass extinction, the largest extinction of the Phanerozoic, led to a severe reduction in both taxonomic richness and ecological complexity of marine communities in its aftermath, eventually culminating in a dramatic ecological restructuring of communities. During the Early Triassic recovery interval, disaster taxa proliferated and numerically dominated many marine benthic invertebrate assemblages. These disaster taxa include the bivalve genera Claraia, Unionites, Eumorphotis and Promyalina, and the inarticulate brachiopod Lingularia. The exact nature and extent of their dominance remains uncertain. Here, a quantitative analysis of the dominance of these taxa within the fossil communities of Panthalassa and Tethys benthic realms is undertaken for the stages of the Early Triassic to examine temporal and regional changes in disaster taxon dominance as recovery progresses. Community dominance and disaster taxon abundance is markedly different between Panthalassic and Tethyan communities. In Panthalassa, community evenness is low in the Induan stage, but increases significantly in the Smithian and Spathian. This is coincident with a significant decrease in the relative abundance and occurrence frequency of the disaster taxa, most notably of low-oxygen affinity taxa Claraia and Lingularia. While the disaster taxa are present in post-Induan assemblages, other taxa, including two articulate brachiopod genera, outrank the disaster taxa in relative abundance. In the Tethys, assemblages are generally more even than contemporaneous Panthalassic assemblages. We observe an averaged trend towards more even communities with fewer disaster taxa in both Panthalassic and Tethyan assemblages over time.

Implementation of disaster medicine education in German medical schools - a nationwide survey

<p><b>Objectives:  </b>Floods, earthquakes and terror attacks in recent years emphasize the importance of disaster preparedness for the medical community. To best prepare doctors for providing optimal care in disaster situations, specific education and training should start at the medical school level.<b> </b>This study contained an online survey among German medical schools to detect the status quo of teaching disaster medicine and to reveal potential obstacles.</p> <p><b>Methods: </b>The deaneries of 36 German medical schools were contacted from April 2016 to May 2017. Via an e-mail link, recipients could anonymously and voluntarily access an online questionnaire (104 items, 42 with a four-point Likert scale, 28 Yes/No questions and 34 with listed items to choose from). The answers were analyzed by descriptive statistics.</p> <p><b>Results: </b>A total of 25 medical schools participated in the survey. Twenty respondents were in favor of expanding disaster medicine teaching at their institutions. The curricular implementation of single topics like triage (n = 21) up to accidents involving radioactive materials (n = 4) varied widely. Only two schools had established a teaching coordinator for disaster medicine and only one e-learning course had been established. Twenty-one respondents regarded financial and 18 regarded organizational matters to be major hurdles in the future.</p> <p><b>Conclusion:</b> Though most faculty representatives indicated they favor expanding and implementing disaster medicine education, German schools still have a lot of room for enhancement in this field<b>. </b>A coordinated effort for a new nationwide e-learning-supported curriculum should be made to establish a defined basis of knowledge and skills in disaster medicine among medical students.</p>

Constructing a comprehensive disaster resilience index: The case of Italy

<p>Measuring disaster resilience is a key component of successful disaster risk management and climate change adaptation. Quantitative, indicator-based assessments are typically applied to evaluate resilience by combining various indicators of performance into a single composite index. Building upon extensive research on social vulnerability and coping/adaptive capacity, we first develop an original, comprehensive disaster resilience index (CDRI) at municipal level across Italy, to support the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015&ndash;2030. As next, we perform extensive sensitivity and robustness analysis to assess how various methodological choices, especially the normalisation and aggregation methods applied, influence the ensuing rankings. The results show patterns of social vulnerability and resilience with sizeable variability across the northern and southern regions. We propose several statistical methods to allow decision makers to explore the territorial, social and economic disparities, and choose aggregation methods best suitable for the various policy purposes. These methods are based on linear and non-liner normalization approaches combining the OWA and LSP aggregators. Robust resilience rankings are determined by relative dominance across multiple methods. The dominance measures can be used as a decision-making benchmark for climate change adaptation and disaster risk management strategies and plans.</p>
