Point Reyes National Seashore Dune Insect Records
<p>The insects of the coastal dunes of Abbott's Lagoon at Point Reyes National Seashore were inventoried between 2000 and 2013. The dataset includes information on the specimens and photographic records that are part of this inventory. Details of the study are found in P. da Silva, et al. The insect community of an endangered habitat: coastal dunes at Point Reyes National Seashore, California, U.S.A., which has been accepted by the <em>Pan Pacific Entomologist</em> and will appear in Volume 99, Number 1, to be published in March, 2023.</p>
Flow velocity measurements over a migrating train of dunes in a flume in the laboratory
<p>Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) measurements conducted over a migrating train of dunes in a flume in the laboratory. The files with an .ntk extension are the raw data as measured and recorded by the instrument (Nortek Vectrino Profiler) and those with an extension .mat are the raw data as exported from the original software into a MatLab readable file format. <br> The data was used to create a streamwise flow velocity profile in the publication associated with this dataset. <br> File names have a nominal distance to the bed in mm expressed by the numbers at the end of the name. For example, 00_10 indicates measurements from 0 to 10 mm. However, as the measurements were conducted over a migrating train of dunes, those numbers are not as precise. However, the instrument records the distance to the bed and it is available inside the files. Above and belowground functional community variation in sandy dunes
<p><span>The role of plant traits in shaping community assembly along environmental gradients is a topic of ongoing research. It is well accepted that plant traits of aboveground organs tend to be conservative in stressful conditions. However, there is limited understanding of how belowground traits respond. Plants may have similar strategies above and belowground, but an intriguing possibility is that there is a trade-off between above and belowground traits of communities to both ensure efficient resource-use and limit niche overlap along the gradient. To test this, we asked whether the response of above and belowground traits of communities is coordinated or not along a stress gradient in Mediterranean sand dune communities. We analyzed 80 vegetation plots in Central Italy to test for coordinated vs independent patterns in above vs belowground plant traits using community weighted mean and standardized effect size of functional richness. Our results show that plant communities close to the sea, which experience high stress, were characterized by high convergence towards aboveground resource conservation and conservative water-use strategies but belowground resource acquisition, consistent with a strong effect of habitat filtering and an above-belowground tradeoff favoring adaptation to harsh and dry conditions. At the opposite end of the gradient with lower stress, plants exhibited higher trait diversity for both above and belowground traits, but overall a dominance of aboveground fast resource acquisition and generally acquisitive water-use strategies, combined with conservative fine-root traits. This suggests that fast growth rate aboveground was compensated by more conservative fine-root strategies, but processes such as competition limited niche overlap overall. Our findings provide new insights into the relationship between functional traits and environmental gradients in plant communities, shedding light on the trade-offs between the above and belowground dimensions.</span></p>

<p>This dataset contains the Duna model output data, included in the article “Exploring controls on coastal dune growth through a simplified model” published in the <em>Journal of Geophysical Research - Earth Surface</em>.</p> <p>The data is provided as “Fig*.mat” files, processed in MatLab (R2023a), and organised following the structure of the figures presented in the manuscript (e.g., Fig1.mat corresponds to data shown in Fig.1). </p> <p>'Dataset.docx' provides information on the individual files contained in the dataset.</p>

<p>From the publication "Earthquake swarm near Great Sand Dunes, Colorado, investigated with temporary seismic network and machine learning seismic phase analysis." in the Mountain Geologist.</p> <p>Three catalogs were produced using different location algorithms. The catalog titled hypoDD_RGR is the preferred catalog.</p> <p>There were 717 events located by glass3 and SEISAN. 700 of those events were located by hypoDD. Column hypoDD_ID reconciles the events in all three catalogs.</p>
Airflow dynamics and aeolian sand transport across a beach-climbing dune-clifftop dune system
<p>This study presents an analysis of wind flow and sediment transport from the beach, up a 50m high, long (130m), steep (mean slope 26°) climbing dune and across a 1.5 m high max, 85 m long and 17.5 m wide clifftop dune 30km south of Dakhla in Morocco, NW Africa during highly oblique incident wind conditions. Multiple 2D sonic and cup/vane anemometers and sand traps were utilised for measurements. Flow steering was significant on the upper climbing dune. Flow deceleration occurred near the dune toe, and topographic forcing of flow was considerable on the upper slopes of the climbing dune. Near-surface flow steadiness (CV<sub>U1</sub>, CV<sub>U0.25</sub>) on the climbing dune straight slope segment was low and constant The distance upslope over which the airflow reached the speed comparable to that on the beach increases as the incident wind speed increases. The greatest flow acceleration and speed-up was observed at the cliff edge reaching 250% at 1m height and 220% at 0.25m height for the lowest incident wind speed class (4-5 m/s). The sand transport rate declined from the beach to the climbing dune toe and lower slope, but at the uppermost section of the climbing dune was 4 times higher than at the beach for the 7-8m/s incident wind speed. Sand in aeolian transport was generally finer than surface sand with mean grain size increasing up the slope. A comparison of the sand transport data collected with sand transport models, and the effects of slope on aeolian transport are also examined.</p>
