Estimating human joint moments unifies exoskeleton control and reduces user effort
<p>Robotic lower-limb exoskeletons can augment human mobility, but current systems require extensive, context-specific considerations, limiting their real-world viability. Here, we present a unified exoskeleton control framework that autonomously adapts assistance based on instantaneous user joint moment estimates from a temporal convolutional network (TCN). When deployed on our hip exoskeleton, the TCN achieved an average RMSE of 0.142 ± 0.021 Nm/kg and R<sup>2</sup> of 0.840 ± 0.045 across 35 ambulatory conditions without any subject-specific calibration. Further, the unified controller significantly reduced user metabolic cost and lower-limb positive work during level ground and incline walking compared to walking without wearing the exoskeleton (P < 0.05). This advancement bridges the gap between in-lab exoskeleton technology and real-world human ambulation, making exoskeleton control technology viable for a broad community.</p>

Data from: When less is more and more is less: the impact of sampling effort on species delineation
Taxonomy is the very first step of most biodiversity studies, but how confident can we be in the taxonomic-systematic exercise? One may hypothesise that the more material, the better the taxonomic delineation, because the more accurate the description of morphological variability. As rarefaction curves assess the degree of knowledge on taxonomic diversity through sampling effort, we aim to test the impact of sampling effort on species delineation by subsampling a given assemblage. To do so, we use an abundant and morphologically diverse conodont fossil record. Within the assemblage, we first recognize four well established morphospecies but about 80% of the specimens share diagnostic characters of these morphospecies. We quantify these diagnostic characters on the sample using geometric morphometrics, and assess the number of morphometric groups, i.e. morphospecies, using ordination and cluster analyses. Then we gradually subsample the assemblage in two ways (randomly and by mimicking taxonomist work) and redo the 'ordination + clustering' protocol to appraise the evolution of the number of clusters related to sampling effort. We observe the number of delineated morphospecies decreasing when increasing the number of specimens, whatever the subsampling method, resulting mostly in less morphospecies than expected. Such rather counter-intuitive influence of sampling effort on species delineation highlights the complexity of taxonomical work. This indicates that new morphotaxa should not be erected based on small samples, and encourages researchers to largely illustrate, measure, and quantitatively compare their material to better constrain the morphological variability of a clade, and so to better characterize and delineate morphospecies. --
Restoration efforts of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica: a collated evidence review dataset
<p><span>Seagrass meadows are important shallow coastal ecosystems due to their contribution to enhancing biodiversity, nutrient cycling, carbon burial, and sediment stabilisation, but the maintenance of their integrity has been threatened by several anthropogenic disturbances. Active restoration is considered a reliable strategy to enhance recovery of seagrass ecosystems, and decision making for correct seagrass restoration management requires relying on valuable information regarding the effectiveness of past restoration actions and experimental efforts. </span>Previous experimental efforts and human-mediated active restoration actions of the slow growing seagrass <em>Posidonia oceanica</em> have been collated here by combining a literature systematic review and questionnaires consulting seagrass ecology experts. Overall, the poor consistency of the available information on <em>P. oceanica</em> restoration may be due to the wide portfolio of practices and methodologies used in different conditions, that supports the need of further field manipulative experiments in various environmental contexts to fill the identified knowledge gaps. The current situation requires an international, collaborative effort from scientists and stakeholders to jointly design the future strategy forward in identifying the best practices that lead to efficient restorations of <em>P. oceanica</em> habitat and functioning.</p>

A paradoxical bias in knowledge about Norwegian freshwater fishes: Research efforts during 1980–2020
<p><span>Norwegian freshwater systems are in general species-poor. That is particularly the case for freshwater fishes. Only 32 species are considered native, whereas an additional 12 species are non-native. Some of the non-native species are also considered to be invasive and have negative ecosystem effects. Freshwater fishes are exposed to numerous stressors throughout their life cycle, many of which are of anthropogenic origin. In order to manage and conserve the diversity of fish there is a need for basic knowledge and understanding. Here I make an effort to review the published research on all Norwegian freshwater fish species during the 1980–2020 period, based on a standardized search on the Web of Science. Over 2000 relevant articles were retrieved and evaluated following the search. The research activity has been highly biased, with most research activity directed at a few species of high economic and societal value. Most work was directed at Atlantic salmon <em>Salmo</em> <em>salar</em> and brown trout <em>S</em>. <em>trutta</em>, and in general towards species within the salmonid family. Extremely little attention was directed at species such as the lampreys (four species) and sculpins (three species). Also, many species that have been listed on the Norwegian Red List during various time periods have not been given any particular attention. This lack of attention was also evident for most of the non-native species. The strong bias in research activity and lack of attention given to many species will clearly lead to difficulties in making appropriate management decisions. This is unfortunate, in particular at a time when climate change may lead to numerous ecosystem-level changes.</span></p>

Heavy metal pollution exposure affects egg coloration but not male provisioning effort in the pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca
<p>Heavy metal pollution is known to negatively affect numerous traits in birds, including foraging, metabolism, immunity, and reproductive success. In this study, our primary aim was to assess the impact of metal pollution exposure on the visual appearance of the pied flycatcher (<em>Ficedula hypoleuca</em>) eggs. Specifically, we focused on blue-green biliverdin-based coloration, a trait expected to function as a signal of female quality to males. In line with the sexually selected egg coloration (SSEC) hypothesis, which posits that males respond to more intensely colored eggs by increasing their provisioning effort, our second objective was to investigate whether metal pollution exposure affects this specific signaling mechanism and subsequent male behavior. Our results showed that although coloration did not correlate with female quality or male provisioning effort, egg blue-green coloration decreased in polluted areas compared to non-polluted control areas. Our analysis of reflectance data revealed that this difference was due to an increased ultraviolet reflectance of eggs from polluted areas, likely caused by changes in eggshell microstructure (e.g. porosity). We therefore propose that metal pollution exposure may compromise crucial color signals of bird eggs. Avian visual modeling indicated that eggs laid by different flycatcher females are generally very similar, making discrimination by males challenging and perhaps impossible especially in dark cavities. Overall, our results suggest that the SSEC hypothesis may lack adaptive relevance for the pied flycatcher in Northern Europe, even in environments influenced by anthropogenic activities.</p>

CI/CD Efforts for Validation, Verification and Benchmarking OpenMP implementations
<p>Software developers must adapt to keep up with the changing capabilities of platforms so that they can utilize the power of High-Performance Computers (HPC), including exascale systems. The OpenMP, a directive-based parallel programming model, allows developers to include directives to existing C, C++, or Fortran code to allow node level parallelism without compromising performance. This paper describes our CI/CD efforts to provide easy evaluation of the support of OpenMP across different compilers using existing testsuites and benchmark suites on HPC platforms. Our main contributions include (1) the set of a Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Development (CD) workflow that captures bugs and provides faster feedback to compiler developers, (2) an evaluation of OpenMP (offloading) implementations supported by AMD, HPE, GNU, LLVM, and Intel, and (3) evaluation of the quality of compilers across different heterogeneous HPC platforms.<br>Through the comprehensive testing through the CI/CD workflow, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state of OpenMP (offloading) support in different compilers and heterogeneous platforms consisting of CPUs and GPUs from NVIDIA, AMD and Intel.</p>
