Data for: Coherent long-term body-size responses across all Northwest Atlantic herring populations to warming and environmental change despite contrasting harvest and ecological factors

<p>Body size is a key component of individual fitness and an important factor in the structure and functioning of populations and ecosystems. Disentangling the effects of environmental change, harvest, and intra- and inter-specific trophic effects on body size remains challenging for populations in the wild. Herring in the Northwest Atlantic provide a strong basis for evaluating hypotheses related to these drivers given that they have experienced significant warming and harvest over the past century, while also having been exposed to a wide range of other selective constraints across their range. Using data on mean length-at-age 4 for the sixteen principal populations over a period of 53 cohorts (1962-2014), we fitted a series of empirical models for temporal and between-population variation in the response to changes in sea surface temperature. We find evidence for a unified cross-population response in the form of a parabolic function according to which populations in naturally warmer environments have responded more negatively to increasing temperature compared with those in colder locations. Temporal variation in residuals from this function was highly coherent among populations, further suggesting a common response to a large-scale environmental driver. The synchrony observed in this study system, despite strong differences in harvest and ecological histories among populations and over time, clearly indicates a dominant role of environmental change on size-at-age in wild populations, in contrast to commonly reported effects of fishing. This finding has important implications for the management of fisheries as it indicates that a key trait associated with population productivity may be under considerably less short-term management control than currently assumed. Our study, overall, illustrates the need for a comparative approach within species for inferences concerning the many possible effects on body size of natural and anthropogenic drivers in the wild.</p>

Species matrix of Indonesian litter and soil Collembola with environmental factors

<p>Collembola are among the most abundant and diverse microarthropods that affect litter decomposition, control microbial functioning and support invertebrate predators. Rainforest conversion and expansion of plantations in tropical regions are associated with changes in microclimate and biodiversity decline, but information on the impact of tropical land use on Collembola communities and their seasonal fluctuations is very limited. Here, we investigated seasonal fluctuations in density and community composition of Collembola in rainforest, and in rubber and oil palm plantations in Jambi province (Sumatra, Indonesia), a region with moderate seasonality (wet and dry seasons) that experienced one of the strongest deforestations globally during the last decades. Samples were taken at the end of the wet season (March), the beginning of the dry season (June), the end of the dry season (August) and the beginning of the wet season (November). Collembola density in the litter was at a maximum at the beginning of the wet season, whereas in soil it generally varied little. Densities of euedaphic (soil-adapted) and epedaphic species (upper litter-adapted) fluctuated less with season than hemiedaphic (lower litter-adapted) and atmobiotic species (aboveground-adapted). Collembola community composition changed with season in each of the land-use systems, with the differences being more pronounced in litter than in soil. Differences in community composition among all three land-use systems were most pronounced at the beginning of the dry season. Water content, pH, fungal and bacterial biomarkers, C/N ratio and root biomass were identified as factors related to seasonal variations in species composition of Collembola in different systems. Our results show that Collembola density and community composition often fluctuate in a similar way across land-use systems, indicating that they are driven by common environmental factors, with water content, pH and food availability being of prominent importance. Notably, differences in Collembola community composition between rainforest and plantation systems were most pronounced in the dry season (June, August), indicating that the conversion of rainforest into plantation systems aggravates detrimental effects of low moisture on soil animal communities. Fluctuations in Collembola communities were generally stronger in litter than in soil, reflecting that Collembola in litter are less buffered against climatic variations than those in soil. Overall, the results document the sensitivity of tropical soil animal communities to seasonal climatic variations, which <span>intensifies</span> the effects of the conversion of rainforest into plantation systems on soil biodiversity.</p>

Data from: It's all about food: Environmental factors cause species-specific dispersal

<p><span>Dispersal is a vital component of the life- history of nearly all organisms. The ability to disperse determines the distribution and abundance of a species and thus its community dynamic at different sites. The scientific challenge is to design standardized laboratory experiments that not only record the effects of single factors but also includes the multi-causal nature of dispersal. Here we tested the effect of the environmental factors density, food availability and predation and the combinations thereof on the dispersal of five free- living nematode species by performing </span><span>experiments in two-patched systems. We hypothesized that emigration is generally positively correlated with the intrinsic rate of natural increase and would decrease with increasing food availability and increase both with the presence of a predator and at higher initial population densities. These predictions were tested both using single-species tests with laboratory cultures as well as using intact natural nematode communities to investigate whether environmental factors determine the composition of dispersing species.</span></p> <p><span>The results of our study revealed a positive correlation between dispersal and intrinsic growth ability, whereas the studied nematode species differed in their dispersal patterns, both under control conditions and in response to bottom-up, top-down, and density dependent stimuli. Despite the species- specific differences in dispersal behavior in response to the environmental factors, the availability of food appeared as the main driver. This was especially pronounced regarding a natural nematode community. Our experiments emphasize the central role of food availability in spatial structuring nematode communities.</span></p> <p> </p>

Global analysis of environmental and socioeconomic factors associated with human burden of environmentally mediated pathogens

<p>This repository contains four datasets that support repeatability of the analyses in the Sokolow et al. paper published in <em>Lancet Planetary Health</em>. Descriptions of the four datasets are included in the metadata document. This study found that 80% of pathogen species known to infect humans are environmentally mediated, causing about 40% of contemporary infectious-disease burden (global loss of 130 million years of healthy life annually). More than 91% of this environmentally-mediated disease burden occurs in tropical countries, and the poorest countries carry the highest burdens across all latitudes. There were weak associations between disease burden and biodiversity or agricultural land use at the global scale. In contrast, the proportion of people with rural poor livelihoods in a country was a strong proximate indicator of environmentally mediated infectious disease burden there. Political stability and wealth were associated with improved sanitation, better health care, and lower proportions of rural poverty, indirectly resulting in lower burdens of environmentally mediated infections."</p>

Data from: Environmental and anthropogenic factors mediating the functional connectivity of the mesquite lizard along the eastern Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt

<p>Functional connectivity, the extent to which a landscape facilitates or impedes the dispersal of individuals across the landscape, is a key factor for the survival of species. Anthropogenic activities such as urbanization, agriculture, and roads, negatively impact functional connectivity of most species, particularly low-vagility species like lizards. Here, we examine how a landscape modified by anthropogenic activities affects the functional connectivity, at both broad and fine scales, of a widely distributed generalist lizard <em>Sceloporus grammicus</em> in the eastern Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, Mexico. We estimated for the first time the species genetic structure, gene flow, and functional connectivity in agricultural and forest zones using genomic data, a comprehensive landscape characterization, and novel methods including gravity models. Our results showed marked genetic differentiation across the study region but also that functional connectivity is maintained for tens of kilometers despite <em>S. grammicus</em> low vagility. Specifically, we found that substrate and air temperature facilitated connectivity over broad and fine scales, respectively, while agricultural cover, relative humidity, and slope were important for connectivity and gene flow. Contrastingly, forest cover and roads favored (broad-scale) and limited (fine-scale) connectivity, likely associated with movement facilitated by small forest patches and with thermoregulation. Altogether, these results support that <em>S. grammicus</em> alternates its thermoregulatory behavior depending on the distance traveled and the habitat environmental conditions, and that it can disperse through relatively modified landscapes, mainly using agricultural zones. The information obtained is crucial to understanding the response of lizards to current anthropogenic pressures and their potential to adapt.</p>
