Georeferenced and vectorized 1834 cadastre (with attribute data), Charleville

<p>The creation of a geographic information system (GIS) linked to socio-demographic databases is the most obvious extension of the &quot;mpf&quot; project to centralize, analyze and combine the many and rich cartographic archives linked to Charleville.<br> A first conclusive attempt to digitize this cadastre was carried out in 2015. It was carried out for the Saint-S&eacute;pulcre district based on a matrix and a cadastral map from 1834. Based on this positive experience feedback, it was decided to begin the full digitization and georeferencing of this cadastral plan in order to have a quality spatial repository that can be associated with socio-demographic data.<br> The use of the metric system and non-projected local coordinates suggested that absolute and relative Euclidean accuracies would be optimal. First, a geometric registration (planimetric coordinates) of the high definition digitized plane (raster format, 600 dots per inch) was started. This operation was built on the identification of common points between the contemporary urban fabric and the geometries present in the archive (street angles, intersection of buildings, etc.). The results obtained, from the geometrical method used called &ldquo;Helmert transformation&rdquo;, appeared satisfactory with a root mean square error (MSE) of 0.8 m from 116 common calibration points.<br> Once this georeferencing was carried out, the exhaustive digitization of the 1834 cadastre and its carto-interpretation made it possible to obtain a set of data composed of two sets of geographic information in open format (geojson) combining socio-demographic data and geometries.<br> Data set composed of three main files:<br> 1. &quot;cadastre-1834-sheet-c1.geojson&quot;, geojson format. Georeferenced and Optimized Digital Asset Files of the Milner Hall in UNESCO World Heritage Sterkfontein Caves

<p>These are the asset files attached to the article:&nbsp;Georeferenced and Optimized Digital Asset of the Milner Hall. The&nbsp;article presents a fully visualized and georeferenced digital asset of a chamber in the Sterkfontein Caves, namely, the Milner Hall, in South Africa&rsquo;s Cradle of Humankind (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The creation of which is valuable in virtually connecting the global community to this important paleontological and archeological site. A considerable number of hominin fossils and earlier Stone Age archeological artefacts have been excavated from ancient cave infills at Sterkfontein, including the important Australopithecus specimens, &ldquo;Little Foot&rdquo; and &ldquo;Mrs Ples&rdquo;. This is also the only publicly accessible, paleoanthropological fossil-bearing cave in the Cradle of Humankind. However, the creation of accurate, visually detailed documentation and emplacement within the larger geomorphological context is challenging here. Real-world constraints, such as availability of equipment, resources and skills are often problematic at heritage sites like this. Furthermore, optimizing data for many uses that is so complex in its topology, scale and textures increases the difficulty in creating a digital asset of this nature. Our asset enables a wide range of use cases, especially within heritage, and scientific planning and outreach. It is a single digital model that contains a spectrum of believable visual effects and surveying accurate layers, and ultimately addresses the aforementioned challenges.</p> <p>This video shows the methods used in the production of this asset:&nbsp;https://youtu.be/e3bmxOzzKSY</p>
