STAQS NASA G-III High Altitude Lidar Observatory (HALO) Data

STAQS_AircraftRemoteSensing_NASA-G3_HALO_Data is the remotely sensed trace gas data for the NASA Gulfstream III aircraft taken by the High Altitude Lidar Observatory (HALO) instrument as part of the Synergistic TEMPO Air Quality Science (STAQS) mission. Data collection for this product is complete.Launched in April 2023, NASA’s Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) satellite monitors major air pollutants across North America every daylight hour at high spatial resolution at a geostationary orbit (GEO). With these measurements, NASA’s STAQS mission seeks to integrate TEMPO satellite observations with traditional air quality monitoring to improve understanding of air quality science. STAQS is being conducted during summer 2023, targeting urban areas, including Los Angeles, New York City, and Chicago. As part of the mission two aircraft will be outfitted with various remote sensing payloads. The Johnson Space Center (JSC) Gulfstream-V (G-V) aircraft will feature the GeoCAPE Airborne Simulator (GCAS) and combined High Spectral Resolution Lidar-2 (HSRL-2) and Ozone Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL). This payload provides repeated high-resolution mapping of NO2, HCHO, ozone, and aerosols up to 3x per day over targeted cities. NASA Langley Research Center’s (LaRC’s) Gulfstream-III will measure city-scale emissions 2x per day over the targeted cities with the High-Altitude Lidar Observatory (HALO) and Airborne Visible InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer – Next Generation (AVIRS-NG). STAQS will also incorporate ground-based tropospheric ozone profiles from the NASA Tropospheric Ozone Lidar Network (TOLNet), NO2, HCHO, and ozone measurements from Pandora spectrometers, and will leverage existing networks operated by the EPA and state air quality agencies. The primary goal of STAQS is to improve our current understanding of air quality science under the TEMPO field of regard. Further goals include evaluating TEMPO level 2 data products, interpreting the temporal and spatial evolution of air quality events tracked by TEMPO, improving temporal estimates of anthropogenic, biogenic, and greenhouse gas emissions, and assessing the benefit of assimilating TEMPO data into chemical transport models.

ACT-America: HALO Lidar Measurements of AOP and ML Heights, 2019

This dataset provides measurements from the High Altitude Lidar Observatory (HALO) instrument, an airborne multi-function Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) and High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL), operating at 532 nm and 1064 nm wavelengths onboard a C-130 aircraft during the June and July 2019 ACT-America campaign. The flights took place over eastern and central North America based from Shreveport, Louisiana; Lincoln, Nebraska; and NASA Wallops Flight Facility located on the eastern shore of Virginia. HALO data were sampled at 0.5 s temporal and 1.25 m vertical resolutions. The data include profiles of aerosol optical properties (AOP), distributions of mixed layer heights (MLH), columns of tropospheric methane, and navigation parameters. The data are provided in HDF5 format along with PNG images and a companion files in Portable Document (*.pdf) format.

Simulated stellar halo in the presence of the LMC

<p>This file contains a simulated Milky Way stellar halo from Erkal et al. 2020 (<a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2020arXiv200111030E/abstract">https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2020arXiv200111030E/abstract</a>)&nbsp;which has been evolved in the presence of a 1.5e11 Msun LMC. This stellar halo has a nearly constant anisotropy of 0.5. As described in the header, the first 6&nbsp;columns give the Galactocentric position and velocity of each particle in cartesian coordinates and the next 6 columns give the observables from the Sun&#39;s location (l,b,dist,mu_l*,mu_b,v_gsr). The Sun is taken to be at a distance of 8.122 kpc in the -x direction. Note that the proper motions are reflex corrected.</p> <p>Please cite&nbsp;<a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2020arXiv200111030E/abstract">Erkal et al. 2020</a>&nbsp;if you make use of this simulation.</p>

Validation of the Bond et. al. (2010) SDSS-derived kinematic models for the Milky Way's disk and halo stars with Gaia Data Release 3 proper motion and radial velocity data

<p>We validate the Bond et. al. (2010) kinematic models for the Milky Way's disk and halo stars with Gaia Data Release 3 data. Bond et al. constructed models for stellar velocity distributions using stellar radial velocities measured by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and stellar proper motions derived from SDSS and the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey astrometric measurements. These models describe velocity distributions as functions of position in the Galaxy, with separate models for disk and halo stars that were labeled using SDSS photometric and spectroscopic metallicity measurements. We find that the Bond et al. model predictions are in good agreement with recent measurements of stellar radial velocities and proper motions by the Gaia survey. In particular, the model accurately predicts the skewed non-Gaussian distribution of rotational velocity for disk stars and its vertical gradient, as well as the dispersions for all three velocity components. Additionally, the spatial invariance of velocity ellipsoid for halo stars when expressed in spherical coordinates is also confirmed by Gaia data at galacto-centric radial distances of up to 15 kpc.</p>
