Due to sedimentation within the datalogger housing, there are periods when the datalogger lost hydrological connection with the stream (i.e., during low flow). As such, data has been flagged to remove these erroneous readings.The datalogger was retrieved in August, 2017 and returned to Dr. Green.

PIE LTER 15-minute surface water dissolved oxygen, temperature, and salinity of six high marsh ponds, Rowley, MA, during the summer of 2016.

We estimated the oxygen metabolism of six ponds in three regions of the PIE-LTER marshes during summer 2016. The goal was to assess whether pond metaoblism rates varied predictably with pond dimensions (e.g., surface area, volume) or geographic attributes (e.g., elevation, distance from upland, marsh region). Sensors recording dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, and salinity were deployed at mid-depth and rotated between the six ponds through the June - August study period. Metaoblism rates were calcluated based on a free-water diel oxygen approach.

Data from: Long-term, high frequency in situ measurements of intertidal mussel bed temperatures using biomimetic sensors

At a proximal level, the physiological impacts of global climate change on ectothermic organisms are manifest as changes in body temperatures. Especially for plants and animals exposed to direct solar radiation, body temperatures can be substantially different from air temperatures. We deployed biomimetic sensors that approximate the thermal characteristics of intertidal mussels at 71 sites worldwide, from 1998-present. Loggers recorded temperatures at 10–30 min intervals nearly continuously at multiple intertidal elevations. Comparisons against direct measurements of mussel tissue temperature indicated errors of ~2.0–2.5 °C, during daily fluctuations that often exceeded 15°–20 °C. Geographic patterns in thermal stress based on biomimetic logger measurements were generally far more complex than anticipated based only on 'habitat-level' measurements of air or sea surface temperature. This unique data set provides an opportunity to link physiological measurements with spatially- and temporally-explicit field observations of body temperature.

Data from: High temperatures and low soil moisture synergistically reduce switchgrass yields from marginal field sites and inhibit fermentation

<p>'Marginal lands' are low productivity sites abandoned from agriculture for reasons such as low or high soil water content, challenging topography, or nutrient deficiency. To avoid competition with crop production, cellulosic bioenergy crops have been proposed for cultivation on marginal lands, however on these sites they may be more strongly affected by environmental stresses such as low soil water content. In this study we used rainout shelters to induce low soil moisture on marginal lands and determine the effect of soil water stress on switchgrass growth and the subsequent production of bioethanol. Five marginal land sites that span a latitudinal gradient in Michigan and Wisconsin were planted to switchgrass in 2013 and during the 2018-2021 growing seasons were exposed to reduced precipitation under rainout shelters in comparison to ambient precipitation. The effect of reduced precipitation was related to the environmental conditions at each site and biofuel production metrics (switchgrass biomass yields and composition and ethanol production). During the first year (2018), the rainout shelters were designed with 60% rain exclusion, which did not affect biomass yields compared to ambient conditions at any of the field sites, but decreased switchgrass fermentability at the Wisconsin Central - Hancock site. In subsequent years, the shelters were redesigned to fully exclude rainfall, which led to reduced biomass yields and inhibited fermentation for three sites. When switchgrass was grown in soils with large reductions in moisture and increases in temperature, the potential for biofuel production was significantly reduced, exposing some of the challenges associated with producing biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass grown under drought conditions.</p>

Synergistic negative effects between a fungicide and high temperatures on homing behaviours in honey bees

<p>Interactions between environmental stressors may contribute to ongoing pollinator declines, but have not been extensively studied. Here, we examined the interaction between the agricultural fungicide Pristine<sup>®</sup> (active ingredients: 25.2% boscalid, 12.8% pyraclostrobin) and high temperatures on critical honey bee behaviours. We have previously shown that consumption of field-realistic levels of this fungicide shortens worker lifespan in the field and impairs associative learning performance in a laboratory-based assay. We hypothesized that Pristine<sup>®</sup> would also impair homing and foraging behaviours in the field, and that an interaction with hot weather would exacerbate this effect. Both field-relevant Pristine<sup>®</sup> exposure and higher air temperatures reduced the probability of successful return on their own. Together, the two factors synergistically reduced the probability of return and increased the time required for bees to return to the hive. Pristine<sup>®</sup> did not affect the masses of pollen or volumes of nectar or water brought back to the hive by foragers, and it did not affect the ratio of forager types in a colony. However, Pristine<sup>®</sup>-fed bees brought more concentrated nectar back to the hive. As both agrochemical usage and heat waves increase, additive and synergistic negative effects may pose major threats to pollinators and sustainable agriculture. </p>

Effect of Nd on high temperatures deformation and corrosion behavior of AZE Mg alloy

<p>An extruded AZE Mg alloy (Mg-3Al-1Zn-0.6Nd) has been developed and prepared to examine the effect of the precipitated phase on corrosion and hot deformation behavior. High-temperature compression experiments show that dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurs at various experimental parameters (473 to 673 K and 1×10<sup>-4</sup> s<sup>-1</sup> to 1×10<sup>-3</sup> s<sup>-1</sup>). The deformation mechanism is dominated by dislocation slip and/or twinning. Al<sub>11</sub>Nd<sub>3</sub> precipitates with two different sizes could impede nucleation and the growth of DRXed grains. Serrated flow occurred owing to the interactions between dislocations and precipitates. The corrosion current density decreases with the addition of Nd elements. Moreover, the continuous precipitation of the Al<sub>11</sub>Nd<sub>3</sub> phase at grain boundaries reduces the corrosion rate in NaCl solution, thereby enhancing the corrosion resistance of AZE alloys.</p>

Dataset for Temperature Development in Ultra-High-Performance Concrete-Filled Double-Skin Tubes Exposed to Fire

<p>This dataset presents extensive experimental data available in the literature for concrete-filled tubes (CFT) and ductile concrete-filled double-skin tubes (CFDST) exposed to fire. Different concrete grades, including normal strength (NS), high strength (HS), and ultra-high-strength (UHS) concrete, were tested, and the temperature developments within various cross-sections are provided in the supplementary data. The density, specific heat, and conductivity that are temperature-dependent, are documented by different researchers and current specifications. The preferred models are provided for carbon-steel, stainless-steel, and different grades of concrete. Numerical studies such as those conducted by the authors in a companion paper would find value in this data for validation and verification purposes</p>

High Temperature Compression Studies of a 6082.50 Aluminium Alloy using Deformation Dilatometer

<p>Data recorded in uniaxial&nbsp;compression for a 6082.50 aluminium&nbsp;alloy deformed at temperatures of 490C, 520C and 560C, at strain rates of 10, 1,&nbsp;and 0.1 s-1, to 50% height reduction, using TA Instruments DIL 805 A/D/T Quenching and Deformation&nbsp;Dilatometer.&nbsp;The cylindrical samples measured 5 mm diameter and 10 mm height. The 6082.50 aluminium specimens were machined from an as-cast billet. Two homogenisation have been performed on this material, one at 590C for 8h and one at 520C for 2h. These are identified as homogenisation 1 and homogenisation 2 in the data.&nbsp;Al2O3 platens were used for all tests, with Mo discs superglued at both ends of the sample to maximise thermal contact.&nbsp;Tests were conducted&nbsp;in an inert He gas atmosphere under a vacuum of 1e-5 mbar. The temperature was controlled using an K-Type thermocouple spot-welded to the centre of the samples with another K-Type thermocouple welded halfway between the centre and end to measure the thermal gradient. Not all of these second thermocouples provided data due to breakages.&nbsp;</p> <p>Data recorded at high acquisition frequency&nbsp;during deformation is&nbsp;stored&nbsp;in the &#39;data_deformation&#39; folder and saved with the format: &#39; test&nbsp;number (002&nbsp;to 038)_Compression_Daniel_Al_(homogenisation treatment - see above)_SHT_540C_Deform_(Deformation temperature)_(deformation strain rate)_QuenchHeGas__1. Here SHT_540C refers to the solutionising treatment and QuenchHeGas__1 refers to the&nbsp;method of cooling after deformation. This dataset does not include readings from the off-centre thermocouple.&nbsp;Data in the &#39;data_basic&#39; folder is recorded at a&nbsp;lower acquisition&nbsp;frequency but&nbsp;includes a recording of the entire thermomechanical cycle, including&nbsp;both heating and cooling stages, as well as deformation.&nbsp;The &#39;method&#39; folder includes&nbsp;contains the temperature and deformation profiles used. &#39;pictures&#39; includes images taken of the samples and set up during the experiment.&nbsp;</p>

High temperatures reduce growth, infection, and transmission of a naturally occurring fungal plant pathogen

<p>Climate change is rapidly altering the distribution of suitable habitats for many species as well as their pathogenic microbes. For many pathogens, including vector-borne diseases of humans and agricultural pathogens, climate change is expected to increase transmission and lead to pathogen range expansions. However, if pathogens have a lower heat tolerance than their host, increased warming could generate 'thermal refugia' for hosts. Predicting the outcomes of warming on disease transmission requires detailed knowledge of the thermal tolerances of both the host and the pathogen. Such thermal tolerance studies are generally lacking for fungal pathogens of wild plant populations, despite the fact that plants form the base of all terrestrial communities. Here, we quantified three aspects of the thermal tolerance (growth, infection, and propagule production) of the naturally occurring fungal pathogen <em>Microbotryum lychnidis-dioicae</em>, which causes a sterilizing anther-smut disease on the herbaceous plant <em>Silene latifolia</em>. We also quantified two aspects of host thermal tolerance: seedling survival and flowering rate. We found that temperatures &gt;30 degreeC reduced the ability of anther-smut spores to germinate, grow, and conjugate in vitro. In addition, we found that high temperatures (30 degreeC) during, or shortly after the time of inoculation strongly reduced the likelihood of infection in seedlings. Finally, we found that high summer temperatures in the field temporarily cured infected plants, likely reducing transmission. Notably, high temperatures did not reduce survival or flowering of the host plants. Taken together, our results show that the fungus is considerably more sensitive to high temperatures than its host plant. A warming climate could therefore result in reduced disease spread or even local pathogen extirpation, leading to thermal refugia for the host.</p>
