INNOVATIVE MACHINE LEARNING APPROACHES TO FOSTER FINANCIAL INCLUSION IN MICROFINANCE

This study examines the application of machine learning algorithms to enhance financial inclusion in microfinance, focusing on credit scoring, risk and fraud detection, and customer segmentation. We performed feature engineering and employed models such as Logistic Regression, Decision Trees, Random Forests, Gradient Boosting Machines (XGBoost and LightGBM), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Autoencoders, Isolation Forests, and K-means Clustering. LightGBM achieved the highest accuracy (89.6%) and AUC (0.92) in credit scoring, while Random Forests demonstrated strong performance in both loan approval (86.7% accuracy) and fraud detection (87.6% accuracy, AUC of 0.88). SVM also performed competitively, and unsupervised methods like Autoencoders and Isolation Forests showed potential for anomaly detection but required further refinement.K-means Clustering excelled in customer segmentation with a silhouette score of 0.72, enabling tailored services based on client demographics. Our findings highlight the significant impact of machine learning on improving credit scoring accuracy, reducing fraud risks, and enhancing customer service delivery in microfinance, thereby promoting financial inclusion for underserved populations. Ethical considerations and model interpretability are crucial, particularly for smaller institutions. This study advocates for the broader adoption of machine learning in the microfinance sector.

From Values to Innovation

From Values to Innovation is a figure from the Article:

"Semantic Innovation as Design Strategy for Sustainability and Ergonomics – A Case Study"

ABSTRACT

This study deploys the framework of architectural innovation (Henderson and Clark 1990), demonstrating that a design-driven strategy leverages incremental and radical innovation through a system of core design concepts. The presented case study of an Italian high-end kitchen producer, Valcucine, is particularly interesting due to its track of innovation in sustainable and ergonomic systems with high aesthetic quality. Findings reveal how meanings are encapsulated in the core design concepts and explored in the strategy of technological innovation – from architectural to modular, radical to incremental. The findings also support previous studies arguing that semantics in design-driven industries are nested into technological innovation.

Dataset on involved actors and their roles in the governance of innovative contracts for agri-environmental and climate schemes

In the presented dataset we have analyzed 19 innovative contracts for agri-environmental and climate schemes from six European countries. The selected contracts represent examples of four different contract types: result-based, collective, land tenure, and value chain contracts.

For the analysis we used a three step approach:

Step 1: We employed a method mix combining literature review, web search, and expert consultation to identify potential case examples for the innovative contracts, resulting in a final sample of four to five contracts per contract types including contracts from Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Step 2: We designed a survey structured in accordance with Elinor Ostrom’s institutional analysis and development (IAD) framework to collect detailed information on overall 34 variables for each contract, yielding a data matrix with 646 data points.

Step 3: We conducted an in-depth analysis for each contract on the involved actors and their roles in contract governance roles, generating a detailed inventory of 179 identified actors where each actor was assigned one or several out of 16 possible governance roles, creating a data matrix of 2,864 data points.

The dataset generated through these three steps contains 84 data files, including tables, figures, maps, and one text file.

The dataset can be re-used by all interested in the institutional and governance analysis of innovative contracts for agri-environmental and climate schemes.

The dataset is linked to Work package 2 (WP2), Task 2.2 (T2.2), and Deliverable 2.2 (D2.2) of the research and innovation action ‘Contracts2.0’ (https://www.project-contracts20.eu/) funded under grant agreement no. 818190 through the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program.

This dataset contains the information required to reproduce the results presented in the following research paper: Sattler, C., Barghusen, R., Bredemeier, B., Dutilly, C., Prager, K. (2023). Institutional analysis of actors involved in the governance of innovative contracts for agri-environmental and climate schemes. GEOLAB Project CTP-ISSR: monotonic and cyclic Centrifuge Tests on Piles in sand proving Innovative Solutions to enhance Structural Resilience

The existing structures are facing continuous changes in the loading conditions during their life span. These changes can be caused by weather and geo-hazards events and affect the structural response which is often already weakened by aging.

A clear understanding of the interaction between the superstructure, the foundation and the surrounding soil is one of the crucial aspects to deal with to adapt the design and maintenance to enhance the resilience of new and existing Critical Infrastructures (CI) often used way beyond their life expectancy. Besides the loading components already considered in engineering practice, CI endure loads having cyclic nature acting continuously during service life (e.g., wind) which are often disregarded in foundation design and may trigger collapse mechanisms. Indeed, they are usually modelled as equivalent-static actions thus neglecting the accumulation of generalized permanent displacements of piled foundations in terms of settlement, sliding and rotation. This lack in design approach can be attributed to very limited research contributions dealing with cyclic loads.

The CTP-ISSR (monotonic and cyclic Centrifuge Tests on Piles in sand proving Innovative Solutions to enhance Structural Resilience) project aims at investigating via centrifuge tests the behaviour of piled foundations under different loading types. Two series of centrifuge experiments on annular shaped pile groups and isolated piles embedded in Hostun sand were carried out at an increased gravity of 50 g in the Turner Beam Centrifuge at Schofield Centre, University of Cambridge.

To simulate prototype reinforced concrete piles, model piles, made up of cement and metal wires, were manufactured in laboratory by means of an ad-hoc mould and manual mortar pouring. Such modelling is necessary to replicate the strong dependency of pile cross-sectional moment capacity on the axial force. Piles were installed in an 850 mm steel tub filled with manually poured Hostun sand prepared with a low-to-medium relative density.

The first test included 2 single piles ad 2 groups of 8 piles connected by a circular rigid cap clear from the soil. The model foundations were subjected to monotonic vertical loads or vertical eccentric cyclic loads of different amplitudes and frequencies. In a similar fashion, the second test included 3 single piles ad 2 pile groups. In this case, the model foundations were subjected to monotonic vertical or horizontal loads or to cyclic horizontal loads of different amplitudes and frequencies. The response of the foundation system, in terms of loads and displacements, was monitored through loads cells, Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs) and Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS). A miniaturized Cone Penetration Test (mini-CPT) was used to characterize the soil before the test execution. The experimental campaign was accomplished in 10 working days (including, among the others, model preparation, execution, data acquisition and dismantle).

The results of the experiments will serve as benchmarks for the development of a non-linear macroelement for piled foundation. Adopting this innovative approach allows the strengthening of CI resilience by adapting the traditional design and maintenance to properly consider changing loading conditions in a simple yet reliable manner.

Researchers and practitioners will be the beneficiaries of the outcome of this research, expecting the following advantages:
- Innovation in design, with the possibility to properly consider cyclic loading;
- Improvement in identifying possible failure mechanisms and the required maintenance to enhance reliability and resilience of existing CI.
