Measurements of ethylene production (using the acetylene reduction assay) as a proxy for nitrogen fixation of epiphytes on seagrass in West Falmouth Harbor during July from 2005 through 2019.
West Falmouth Harbor (West Falmouth, MA, USA) has been experiencing a dramatic increase in nitrogen loading from an upgradient municipal wastewater treatment facility since the early 2000’s. As part of a long-term study into the effects of this nitrogen enrichment, we have measured nitrogen fixation rates of seagrass-associated epiphytes using the acetylene reduction technique. Samples were taken annually in July at two sites, one in the well-flushed outer basin (OH) and one in the inner basin closer to the dominant groundwater N source (Snug Harbor, SH). Additional data are presented in 2019 at 18 sites spatially distributed through the seagrass bed to assess spatial heterogeneity. Individual replicate data are presented. These data are in support of a manuscript submitted to the journal Biogeochemistry by Marino et al, submitted for publication (12/2022).

To determine temporal and spatial patterns in arctic stream biogeochemistry we conducted three synoptic surveys of streams throughout a 48km2 watershed near Toolik Lake, AK in spring (early-June), summer (mid-July), and fall (mid-September) 2011. During each synoptic survey, we sampled 52 sites within a period of four days to minimize the effect of temporal hydrologic variability. At each site we measured stream temperature, pH, and conductivity and sampled water for solute analysis.

Inventory and description of thermokarst features observed along the Umiat Corridor in July 2009.
Using a combination of aerial imagery and ~1m resolution airborne lidar (collected July, 2009), we use manual visual inspection of the two datasets to identify point locations of over 7000 thermal erosion features (thermokarst) of varying maturity. For each feature we report its x,y position, the facing direction of the feature, the local topographic setting, the geologic unit it occurs on, the relative age of the feature and the specific type of thermal erosion feature.

Soil samples were collected from control, and N+P plots from within a set of treatments in Arctic LTER Moist Acidic Tundra plots established in 1989 and in 2006 . At the time of sampling the soil was separated into organic horizon, organic/mineral interface, and the upper 5cm of the mineral soil. In the lab the potential activities of seven hydrolytic enzymes was determined using fluorometric techniques (Saiya-Cork et al. 2002) modified following Steinweg et al(.2012).

Precipitation, collected from a wet/dry precipitation collector located near University of Alaska Fairbanks Toolik Field Station, North Slope of Alaska (68 degrees 37' 42"N, 149 degrees 35' 46"W) was sent out for standardized EPA rain water analysis. Nutrient chemistry was also run on a sub sample at the field station.
Photo-oxidation and photomineralization apparent quantum yield dataset for dissolved organic carbon leached from permafrost soils collected from the North Slope of Alaska, July 2018.
Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was leached from permafrost soils near the Toolik Field Station in the Alaskan Arctic and then characterized for its photochemical properties. Oxygen (O2) consumed from photo-oxidation of permafrost DOC was measured as a function of sunlight wavelength, defined as the apparent quantum yield spectrum of photo-oxidation (O2 consumed per mol photon absorbed by DOC). Carbon dioxide (CO2) produced from photomineralization of permafrost DOC was measured as a function of sunlight wavelength, defined as the apparent quantum yield spectrum of photomineralization (CO2 produced per mol photon absorbed by DOC).

The root respiration experiment was used to partition root respiration from ecosystem respiration at the control plot.

Groundwater and surface water phosphorus concentrations, Everglades National Park (FCE), South Florida for June, July, August and November 2003
Seawater intrusion into a coastal aquifer mixes with the discharging fresh water to form a zone of mixed composition. This mixing zone is considered to be geochemical important in a carbonate aquifer as an area of enhanced carbonate mineral dissolution and,or precipitation. Ion exchange reactions are also common within the mixing zone as the dominant cation in seawater, sodium, replaces other ions adsorbed to the aquifer matrix. Phosphorus has a strong affinity for adsorption to calcium carbonate minerals. Both the dissolution of calcium carbonate minerals as well as ion exchange reactions have the potential to release phosphorus from the aquifer matrix to the groundwater. Discharge of this phosphorus-laden groundwater, as induced by the fresh/saline water interface, may then be an additional source of phosphorus to the overlying coastal environments. Both surface water and groundwater were collected across the seawater intrusion zone of the coastal Everglades in south Florida during the summer of 2003. Hydrogen sulfide was released from the groundwater wells during sampling, indicating the groundwater was most likely anoxic. In order to reduce the potential exposure of the groundwater to oxygen during sampling, groundwater samples were collected in the following manner. Groundwater wells were first purged of at least three well volumes prior to sampling. Water samples were then collected using a submersible pump with a 16-gauge needle fitted at the end of the discharge hose. The needle was pushed through a rubber stopper covering an acid-washed vacutainer that was first flushed with nitrogen gas to remove and oxygen, then evacuated with a vacuum pump to establish a negative pressure within the vacutainer. Water samples were stored on ice and transported to the laboratory. Water Temperature measured at Shark River, Everglades National Park (FCE) from July 2007 to June 2011
Between 2007 and 2011 we placed HOBO continuous water temperature loggers at 17 locations in the Shark River Estuary for various lengths of times. These stations expanded FCE's spatial coverage in terms of temperature monitoring in the estuary.
Institutional Dimensions of Restoring Everglades Water Quality - Social Capital Analysis (FCE), Florida Everglades Agricultural Area from September 2014 to July 2015
These data were compiled through the Institutional Dimensions of Restoring Everglades Water Quality research project. One of the manuscripts generated by this project focused on the social capital dynamics in the Everglades Agricultural Area. These data represent different social capital aspects reflected by the responses of interview subjects. The purpose of analyzing social capital was to explore why and how farmers cooperated given that the state law, the Everglades Forever Act, which required the adoption of best management practices, relied on shared compliance for farmers to improve water quality. The study sought to undrestand how different aspects of social capital (broadly pro-social norms of reciprocity and trust) either encouraged or discouraged farmers to adopt BMPs effectively.
Movement Metrics for Common Snook and Atlantic Tarpon in the Coastal Everglades, Florida, USA, July 2016 to April 2021
This dataset contains acoustic telemetry derived residency and movement metrics for Common Snook (Centropomus undecimalis) and Atlantic Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) tracked in two neighboring estuarine systems in the coastal Florida Everglades by the Coastal Everglades Lakes Acoustic Array. Data were summarized at the quarter-season level (early dry, late dry, early wet, late wet) across multiple years (2016–2021), resulting in 326 records and 15 variables. Each record includes metadata on species identity, year, system, and season, as well as individual-level residency time statistics (minimum, maximum, mean, variance), number of lakes visited, and proportional system use. The dataset provides a standardized summary of spatial and temporal variation in Snook and Tarpon habitat use, suitable for investigating seasonal residency and patterns of movement behavior. Data collection for this package is complete.
Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: growth and enzyme activity traits of soil fungi isolated from CCASE in July 2017, grown under a common garden experiment in the laboratory that mimicked CCASE soil temperature treatments
Projections for the northeastern U.S. indicate that mean air temperatures will rise and snowfall will become less frequent, causing more frequent soil freezing. To test fungal responses to these combined chronic and extreme soil temperature changes, we conducted a laboratory-based common garden experiment with soil fungi that had been subjected to different combinations of growing season soil warming, winter soil freeze/thaw cycles, and ambient conditions for four years in the field. We found that fungi originating from field plots experiencing a combination of growing season warming and winter freeze/thaw cycles had inherently lower activity of acid phosphatase, but higher cellulase activity, that could not be reversed in the lab. In addition, fungi quickly adjusted their physiology to freeze/thaw cycles in the laboratory, reducing growth rate and potentially reducing their carbon use efficiency. Our findings suggest that less than four years of new soil temperature conditions in the field can lead to physiological shifts by some soil fungi, as well as irreversible loss or acquisition of extracellular enzyme activity traits by other fungi. These findings could explain field observations of shifting soil carbon and nutrient cycling under simulated climate change. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
