Data from: Identifying patterns of non-communicable diseases in developed eastern coastal China: a longitudinal study of electronic health records from 12 public hospitals

Objective: Few studies have examined the spectrum and trends of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in inpatients in eastern coastal China, which is transforming from an industrial economy to a service-oriented economy and is the most economically developed region in the country. This study aimed to dynamically elucidate the spectrum and characteristics of severe NCDs in eastern coastal China by analysing patients' longitudinal electronic health records (EHRs). Setting: To monitor the spectrum of NCDs dynamically, we extracted the EHR data from 12 general tertiary hospitals in eastern coastal China from 2003 to 2014. The rankings of and trends in the proportions of different NCDs presented by inpatients in different gender and age groups were calculated and analysed. Participants: We obtained a total sample of 1,907,484 inpatients with NCDs from 2003 to 2014, 50.05% of whom were male and 81.53% were aged 50 years or older. Results: There was an increase in the number of total NCD inpatients in eastern coastal China from 2003 to 2014. However, the proportion of chronic respiratory diseases and cancer inpatients decreased over the 12-year period. Compared with men, women displayed a significant increase in the proportion of mental and behavioural disorders (P<0.001) over time. Additionally, digestive diseases and sensory organ diseases significantly decreased among men, but not women. The older group accounted for a larger and growing proportion of the NCD inpatients, and the most common conditions in this group were cerebral infarctions, coronary heart disease and hypertension. In addition, the proportion of 21- to 50-year-old inpatients with diabetes, blood diseases or endocrine diseases skyrocketed from 2003 to 2014 (P<0.001). Conclusions: The burden of inpatients' NCDs increased rapidly, particularly among women and younger people. The NCD spectrum observed in eastern coastal China is a good source of evidence for developing prevention guides for regions experiencing transition.

Dataset: Stunting and Its Association with Education and Cognitive Outcomes in Adulthood: A Longitudinal Study in Indonesia

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Stunting is associated with adverse outcomes in adulthood. This article specifically aims to analyse the relationship between childhood stunting and education as well as cognitive outcomes for adults in Indonesia.&nbsp;Pooled data from two waves of the Indonesia Family Life Survey in 1993 and 1997, identified 4851 children aged 0-5 by their stunting status as well as their relative height to be compared for their differences in educational outcomes and cognitive abilities in 2014. Height-for-age z-score was used to proxy relative height and determine stunting status based on 2006 WHO child&rsquo;s growth standards. The outcomes for education and cognitive abilities include educational levels, years of schooling, age of school entry, failing a grade, and scores for cognitive tests. The study employs estimation models of pooled regressions and instrumental variables.&nbsp;Stunting and relatively small stature had a significant association with cognitive development, and they worked as an intermediary to cognitive developmental barriers manifested in reduced educational outcomes. A lack of one SD in height-for-age was associated with a 0.125-point reduction in education level, 0.4 years shortened length of the school, 6% higher chances of failing grades and dropouts from secondary school, and 0.19-0.24 SD lowered cognitive and numerical scores. Similarly, stunting tends to decrease cognitive test scores by 0.56-0.8 SD compared to non-stunting and reduce educational achievement by 0.38 points, 1.4 years shorter schooling, 17.7% and 23% more likely to fail grades. In addition, HAZ and stunting are also associated with the school entry age of 0.35 and 0.11 years, respectively.</p>

Longitudinal Assessment of TCR Repertoires in Recipients of Inactivated SARS-CoV-2 Vaccines: An Artificial Intelligence-Guided Study

<p>T cells play a crucial role in mitigating disease severity during SARS-CoV-2 infection and in shaping long-term immune memory. However, the precise molecular immune response involving T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire changes following full vaccination, and evaluating vaccine efficacy through TCR analysis, remains incompletely understood. In this study, we conducted a 10-month longitudinal investigation of individuals who received SARS-CoV-2 inactivated vaccines and developed a vaccine efficacy evaluation model. Through the advanced large language artificial intelligence method, we identified vaccine-specific TCR clones, 3 V genes, 20 V-J combinations, and 3 epitopes, and traced their longitudinal development. The vaccine-specific TCR clones expanded to peak levels after the second vaccine dose and remained detectable in most subjects at 10 months. Utilizing vaccine-specific TCRs as novel markers, we constructed a vaccine efficacy evaluation model that predicts antibody levels with a mean AUC of 0.96, highlighting the relationship between vaccine-specific TCRs and antibodies. Our findings reveal the longitudinal patterns of vaccine-specific TCR clones and the potential of the efficacy evaluation model built upon them.</p>
