2021 Minnesota bumble bee survey data
<p>Mounting evidence of bumble bee declines has stimulated an interest in monitoring and conservation. Understanding the influence of land use on occupancy patterns of imperiled species is crucial to successful recovery planning. Using detection data from community surveys, we assessed land use associations for seven bumble bee species in Minnesota, U.S.A., including an endangered species (<em>Bombus</em> <em>affinis</em> Cresson). We used multi-species occupancy models to assess the effect of three major land use types (developed, agricultural, and natural) within 0.5 and 1.5 km on occupancy of seven <em>Bombus</em> species, while accounting for detection uncertainty. <em>Bombus</em> <em>affinis</em> was positively associated with developed landscapes at both scales, suggesting that urban areas can provide conservation benefits for this species in the Midwest. Further, we show that <em>B. affinis</em> occupancy and detection are highest in developed landscapes and lowest in agricultural landscapes, representing an inverse relationship with the relative land use ratios of these landscapes in Minnesota. Occupancy of two bumble bee species had strong positive associations with natural landscapes within 1.5 km and two species had strong negative associations with agricultural landscapes within 1.5 km. Our results suggest that best practices for imperiled <em>Bombus</em> monitoring and recovery planning depends upon the surrounding major land use patterns. We provide recommendations for urban planning to support <em>B. affinis</em> based on conservation success in the metropolitan areas of Minneapolis-St. Paul. We also encourage substantial survey effort be employed in agricultural and natural regions of the state historically occupied by <em>B. affinis</em> to determine the current occupancy state.</p>

Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Lake Monitoring Program (MPCA) Citizen Lake Monitoring Program Secchi
“The CLMP is a cooperative program combining the technical resources of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and the volunteer efforts of citizens statewide who collect water-quality data on their lakes. The CLMP involves voluntary participation of citizens residing on or near lakes or those who are frequent lake users. CLMP participants are asked to take weekly transparency measurements on their lake during the summer using a Secchi disk. A minimum of eight to ten readings per season are required in order to adequately define each summer’s water quality. Data collected by CLMP volunteers are entered into the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s water quality database (called STORET) along with all other water quality data collected by the MPCA. These data are used to analyze water quality trends, characterize trophic status, and provide a basis for water quality goal setting."
Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Lake Monitoring Program, 1926-1998
The MPCA monitors approximately 100 lakes each year. Each lake is sampled monthly from May to September for a period of two years. The primary focus is on collection of total phosphorus (nutrient), chlorophyll-a (pigment in algae), and Secchi depth (distance light will travel in water). With this information, it is possible to determine the condition of the lake, commonly referred to as the “trophic status. After a lake has been monitored for a minimum of two years, the water chemistry data are used to assess its condition. The water quality data and the results of the condition assessment are incorporated in a variety of products, including lake assessment reports, status and trend/update reports and fact sheets. "This is an inclusive project created to migrate data to modernized STORET from the 21MINNL Agency Code in Legacy STORET where project information was not stored on the sample or result level. Specific purposes for Legacy STORET data collection may be available in the station descriptions."
Minnesota Fond du Lac Chemistry from 1998-2011
This database includes 24 lakes located in the Fond du Lac Reservation in east central Minnesota: 7 wild rice lakes, 8 lakes listed as ‘recreational/fisheries’ lakes, and 9 other lakes. The lakes have been monitored for this program from 1998 to present and they are part of an ongoing program. This information is the basis for assessing water quality, identifying impacts and stressors, restoration opportunities, and recommendation for additional protection as “Outstanding Reservation Resource Water”. The lakes have been sampled for chemistry (alkalinity, apparent color, chloride, chlorophyll a, color, dissolved organic carbon, pH, total suspended solids, specific conductance, sulfate, true color); nitrogen (ammonia, ammonia, nitrate+nitrite, total Kjeldahl); phosphorus (ortho, total); and Secchi depth. The lakes were sampled monthly during the open-water season (approximately, May-October) in the surface layer. See GIS shapefile for geographic information on the lakes

Phenotypic and marker data for statistical genetic analysis of Minnesota maize lines
<p>Publicly available maize lines are a resource for studying quantitative genetic variation in plants. This dataset includes cluster or subpopulation information, phenotypic data, and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data for 272 maize lines developed by the University of Minnesota, other universities, and seed companies. The lines were evaluated at multiple locations in Minnesota in 2011 and 2012 for different phenological, morphological, and kernel composition traits. The lines were genotyped for 56,110 SNP loci on the Maize SNP50 Beadchip (Illumina). Filtering for SNP data quality led to data for 28,626 SNP loci for the 272 maize lines. Population structure analysis showed that the maize lines clustered into five subpopulations (A321 or Minnesota 13, B73, Mo17, Oh43, and PH207 or Iodent) that represented most of the U.S. Corn Belt diversity (Schaefer and Bernardo 2013a, Crop Science 53:1529-1536). Genomewide association mapping revealed marker-trait associations for male flowering date, female flowering date, plant height, ear height, and kernel concentration for oil, protein, and starch (Schaefer and Bernardo 2013b, Crop Science 53:2518-2529). The covariance between relatives is a tenet in quantitative genetics, but such classical theory has ignored any resemblance between individuals unrelated by pedigree. Analysis of this maize dataset showed that a covariance between nonrelatives in maize is not ubiquitous but it is sometimes rpesent for specific traits and for certain groups of unrelated individuals (Bernardo 2022, Heredity).</p>
