Multidimensional XUV Photoemission Spectroscopy of 1T-TiTe2 for different crystal orientations

We performed extreme ultraviolet (21.7 eV) multidimensional angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy for two different crystal orientations linked to each other by mirror symmetry, we isolate and identify the role of orbital texture in photoemission from the transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TiTe$_2$. By comparing these experimental results with theoretical calculations based on both a quantitative one-step model of photoemission and an intuitive tight-binding model, we unambiguously demonstrate the link between the momentum-dependent orbital orientation and the emergence of strong intrinsic linear dichroism in the photoelectron angular distributions.

Data for: New insights into multi-component atmospheric wet deposition across China: A multidimensional analysis

Atmospheric wet deposition has attracted much attention because of its removal function of aerosol particles and impact on ecosystem. It is a complex multi-component process due to various pollutants emission sources and reaction processes. However, traditional studies have focused on single components, ignoring the internal relationships and the comprehensive wet deposition level; this has hindered the comprehensive understanding and the assessment of ecological effects of deposition. Here, based on the monitoring of wet deposition across 52 stations during 2013–2018 in China, we used two novel multidimensional methods to investigate multi-component atmospheric wet deposition: network analysis and comprehensive index. Network analysis is a new method that can help us better explore the overall relationship between multiple components. The tighter deposition networks, the stronger relationship between different components, meaning that their source are more similar. We find that with the improvement of human development level and the diversification of energy structure, the deposition relationship networks will become looser. Comprehensive index is a method to realize the fusion of multiple parameters, which can help us explore the comprehensive effect of multi-component atmospheric deposition on ecosystem. We calculated the deposition comprehensive index for different ecological regions and found that it was strongly influenced by human activities (energy consumption, fertilization, and vehicle ownership) and precipitation. The findings presented here provide a new perspective for understanding multi-component atmospheric deposition and potential suggestions for evaluating its comprehensive ecological effects.

Fig. 3.—Nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination for the 4 in Effects of fire on small mammal communities in frequent-fire forests in California

Fig. 3.—Nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination for the 4 habitat variables (overstory cover, oak tree cover, shrub cover, and fire severity index) and elevation and the 11 most commonly captured mammal species in 10 burned and 10 unburned sites from April to July 2004 and 2005 in Yosemite National Park, California. Only variables with a r ≥ 0.7 or the environmental variable with the highest r for that axis (i.e., fire severity r = −0.41 and oak tree cover r = 0.51) are listed on each axis. The R2 was 0.09 and 0.77 for axis 1 and 2, respectively, for a cumulative total of 0.86. The mammal species codes represent the following: CALA, Callospermophilus lateralis; GLSA, Glaucomys sabrinus (r = 0.73 on axis 1); MIXX, Microtus sp.; NEQU, Neotamias quadrimaculatus (r = −0.71 on axis 2); NESP, N. speciosus (r = −0.67 on axis 1); OTBE, Otospermophilus beecheyi; PEBO, Peromyscus boylii; PEMA; P. maniculatus (r = −0.88 on axis 2); SCGR, Sciurus griseus (r = 0.68 on axis 1); SOXX, Sorex sp.; TADO, Tamiasciurus douglasii.

Multidimensional specialization and generalization are pervasive in soil prokaryotes with generalists dominating communities and specialists more central in networks

Project folder to run analyses in the manuscript "Multidimensional specialization and generalization are pervasive in soil prokaryotes with generalists dominating communities and specialists more central in networks" with necessary raw and processed data.

Manuscript abstract:

Habitat specialization underpins biological processes from species distributions to speciation. However, organisms are often described as specialists or generalists based on a single niche axis, despite facing complex, multidimensional environments. Here, we analyzed 236 prokaryotic communities across the United States demonstrating for the first time that 90% of >1,200 prokaryotes followed one of two trajectories: specialization on all niche axes (multidimensional specialization) or generalization on all axes (multidimensional generalization). We then documented that this pervasive multidimensional specialization/generalization had a wide range of ecological and evolutionary consequences. First, multidimensional specialization and generalization are highly conserved with very few transitions between these two trajectories. Second, multidimensional generalists dominated communities because they were 73 times more abundant than specialists. Lastly, multidimensional specialists played important roles in community structure with ~220% more connections in microbiome networks. These results indicate that multidimensional generalization and specialization are evolutionarily stable with multidimensional generalists supporting larger populations and multidimensional specialists playing important roles within communities likely stemming from their overrepresentation among pollutant detoxifiers and nutrient cyclers. Taken together, we demonstrate that the vast majority of soil prokaryotes are restricted to one of two multidimensional niche trajectories, multidimensional specialization or multidimensional generalization, which then has far-reaching consequences for evolutionary transitions, microbial dominance, and community roles.

Data from: Specialization: a multidimensional and integrative perspective

Netwotk_information: Information of every interacting network for which the different specialization metrics were estimated from the repository https://www.web-of-life.es/ (except data of lichens). Contains the number of species of both classes of organisms, the total number of species of each networks, the country and the coordinates.

Lichen_networks: Information of every interacting network for mycobiont species and Nostoc phylogroups of 9 forests across a latitudinal gradient in Chile. Each sheet of the Excel document shows the incidence matrix of each of the forest.

Abstract: Specialization remains as a controversial and ambiguous term in ecology. Although it has been usually measured using a dichotomic and simplified classification of specialists and generalists, its nature is by far more complex. In the case of biotic interactions, the assignation of these two labels, is usually based on the number of interacting partners (one or few versus many). Here we provide a more precise, quantitative, and objective interpretation of the specialization phenomenon combining three different dimensions and metrics (partner richness, Simpson’s evenness, and d’-index) that offer complementary information to quantify specialization. Hence, partner richness is a metric associated with the specificity, Simpson’s evenness is related with the preference and d’ index with the selectivity of the biotic interactions. Consequently, we propose a 3D specialization space combining these three metrics which allows to identify the degree of biotic specialization fleeing from its simplified historical interpretation. The proposed space was subsequently evaluated in five natural interacting systems (host-parasite, plant-ant, plant-pollinator, plant-disperser, and mycobiont-cyanobacteria) using available data comprising 116 networks with quantitative observations. The results indicate the prevalence of a lax specialization, where most organisms tended to show low values in at least one of the metrics. Predominantly, observations showed high values of specificity and low values of preference and selectivity. This relaxed specialization may provide advantages of being specialized, without sentencing specialization to its limitations when being too tight. The implementation of this framework provides a useful tool that allows to identify specialization in a more objective, integrative, and universal way for future specialization studies.
