Adjacent crop type impacts potential pollinator communities and their pollination services in remnants of natural vegetation.
<p><em><span>Aim:</span></em><span> Pollination plays a crucial role in the conservation of many plant species persisting in fragmented, human-dominated landscapes. Pollinators are known to be instrumental in maintaining genetic diversity and metapopulation dynamics for many plant species and are important for providing ecological services that are essential in agricultural landscapes where populations of native plants are highly isolated. Numerous studies have explored the value of remnant native vegetation for supporting pollination services to crop species; yet the effect of mass-flowering crops on the pollinator communities and the pollination services they provide to native plant communities persisting in fragmented landscapes are less well-understood. Here, we</span><span> assess the influence of the presence and phenology of a mass-flowering crop to pollinator community structure, abundance and pollen load composition in remnant vegetation in complex agricultural landscapes. </span></p> <p><em><span>Location:</span></em><span> South-west Western Australia, Australia.</span></p> <p><em><span>Methods:</span></em><span> </span>We recorded the composition and abundance of insect flower visitors and their pollen loads in isolated remnants of York gum-Jam woodlands adjacent to canola (insect-attracting) or wheat (non-insect-attracting) fields over two years. </p> <p><em>Results:</em> All bees were much more sensitive to adjacent crop type (neighbouring canola or wheat) than non-bee pollinators. Honeybees were the most abundant pollinators in canola fields during peak flowering. Honeybee abundance increased in canola-adjacent reserves post-canola bloom, potentially indicating a movement into reserves as crop flowering waned. Native bees were the most diverse in remnant vegetation. Pollen loads of native bees were more mixed (increased pollen richness and evenness) when sampled next to canola fields compared to wheat fields. </p> <p><em>Main conclusion:</em> The availability of potential insect pollinators to remnant wildflower communities in agricultural landscapes is context dependent. Whether sampled communities were adjacent to wheat or canola in a landscape significantly impacted the abundance of potential pollinators in certain landscape elements, but not others, and the composition of pollen loads carried by these insects. Results offer novel insights about the influence of landscape context on <span>pollinator communities and the potential pollination services available for the conservation of native plant species in highly fragmented agricultural landscapes.</span></p>
Impact of stress regime change on the permeability of a naturally fractured carbonate buildup (Latemar, the Dolomites, northern Italy)_DATASET
<p>The datasets (original field photographs, drone images and finite-element modelling algorithms and results) presented here are drawn from the extensive fieldwork, and finite-element modelling of the impact of stress regime change on the permeability of a naturally fractured carbonate buildup (Latemar, the Dolomites, northern Italy) by the author(s). These datasets show different rock units in the Latemar platform riddled with diverse structural elements, including fractures (veins, joints, faults) and stylolites, and the results of the impact of the modelled far-field stresses at (i) subsidence deformation from the NW–SE and (ii) Alpine deformation from N–S. All of which increased the overall fracture aperture and permeability of the studied carbonate platform. </p> <p>In addition, the datasets are part of the paper titled "<strong>Impact of stress regime change on the permeability of a naturally fractured carbonate buildup (Latemar, the Dolomites, northern Italy)</strong>"<strong>, </strong>published<strong> </strong>in the Solid Earth Journal. </p> <p>The drone images are taken with DJI Phantom 4® and processed using Agisoft PhotoScan® - a photogrammetry tool. The workflow in processing the drone images is publicly available in the published work of Bisdom et al. (2017).</p>
Neural, functional, and aesthetic impacts of spatially heterogeneous flicker: a potential role of natural flicker
<p>Spatially heterogeneous flicker, characterized by probabilistic and locally independent luminance modulations, abounds in nature. It is generated by flames, water surfaces, rustling leaves, and so on, and it is pleasant to the senses. It affords spatiotemporal multistability that allows sensory activation conforming to the biases of the visual system, thereby generating the perception of spontaneous motion and likely facilitating the calibration of motion detectors. One may thus hypothesize that spatially heterogeneous flicker might potentially provide restoring stimuli to the visual system that engage fluent (requiring minimal top-down control) and self-calibrating processes. Here, we present some converging behavioral and electrophysiological evidence consistent with this idea. Spatially heterogeneous (multistable) flicker (relative to controls matched in temporal statistics) reduced posterior EEG (electroencephalography) beta power implicated in long-range neural interactions that impose top-down influences on sensory processing. Further, the degree of spatiotemporal multistability, the amount of posterior beta-power reduction, and the aesthetic responses to flicker were closely associated. These results are consistent with the idea that the pleasantness of natural flicker may derive from its spatiotemporal multistability that affords fluent and self-calibrating visual processing.</p> <p> </p>
Natural disturbance impacts on trade-offs and co-benefits of forest biodiversity and carbon
<p>With accelerating environmental change, understanding the influence of forest disturbances and trade-offs between biodiversity and carbon dynamics is of high socio-economic importance. Most studies, however, have assessed immediate or short-term effects of disturbance, while long-term impacts remain poorly understood. Here, using a tree-ring-based approach, we modelled the effect of 250 years of disturbances on present-day biodiversity indicators and carbon dynamics in well-preserved European temperate primary forests. Our results indicated that disturbance legacies spanning centuries shaped contemporary forest co-benefits and trade-offs, with contrasting, local-scale effects. In the short-term, disturbances enhanced carbon sequestration, reaching maximum rates within a comparatively narrow post-disturbance window (up to 50 years). Concurrently, disturbance diminished aboveground carbon storage, which gradually returned to peak levels over centuries. Temporal patterns in biodiversity potential were bimodal; the first maximum coincided with the short-term post-disturbance carbon sequestration peak, and the second occurred during periods of maximum carbon storage in complex old growth. However, despite fluctuating local-scale trade-offs, forest biodiversity and carbon storage remained stable across the broader study region. These findings underscore the dynamic interdependencies of forest processes, and highlight the necessity of large-scale conservation programs to effectively promote both biodiversity and long-term carbon storage, particularly given the accelerating global biodiversity and climate crises.</p>
