Bekheet, Franziska Thimm, Benjamin Bischoff, Michael Geske, Martin Konrad, Sebastian Praetz, Christopher Schlesiger, S&ouml;ren Selve, Aleksander Gurlo, Frank Rosowski, Reinhard Schom&auml;cker</p> <p>Abstract: We report on the one-pot synthesis of inexpensive and abundant CeO<sub>2</sub> and 1.5, 4.5, and 9 mol% Fe-doped ceria (Ce<sub>1-x</sub>Fe<sub>x</sub>O<sub>2-&delta;</sub>) systems and their catalytic activity for tandem&nbsp;CO<sub>2</sub> hydrogenation. XAFS and XRD demonstrate that oxygen vacancies are generated via two mechanisms: firstly, by the substitution of Ce<sup>4+</sup> by Fe<sup>3+ </sup>in the lattice and the subsequent loss of oxygen anions. Secondly, by the partial reduction of Ce<sup>+4</sup> to Ce<sup>+3</sup>, which is enhanced by the presence of Fe. All the samples tested show high activity for CO<sub>2</sub> hydrogenation and the production of CO, CH<sub>4</sub>, and light (C<sub>2</sub>-C<sub>4</sub>) alkanes and alkenes, with the 9 mol% Fe-doped CeO<sub>2</sub> showing the best performance in terms of CO<sub>2</sub> reaction rate and product selectivity. During reaction, Fe exsolves/seggregates from the ceria, resulting in particles decorating the surface of the catalyst and increasing the reaction rates of CO<sub>2</sub>. This system is composed of two functionalities, the oxygen vacancy and the Fe, whose close vicinity results in a high selectivity toward CO and CH<sub>4</sub> detrimental to the more valuable hydrocarbons. A rather complex interplay between the two functionalities, their interface, and the particle size of the catalysts exists for this tandem reaction network on this catalytic system and deserves further studies.</p>

Unknown Pot - Snake Pattern

Ionad Oidhreachta Leitir Mealláin (Heritage Centre) A lot of interest was shown in cultural and heritage exhibitions held in recent years of the private collection of the local historian John Bhaba Jeaic Ó Confhaola. As a result the committee decided to find a permanent centre to exhibit the rich heritage of the area. This small pot is highly decrotive and has a snake motiff running just below the handle. Not a melting pot: plant species aggregate in their non-native range

<p><b>Aim</b>: Plant species continue to be moved outside of their native range by human activities. Here, we aim at determining whether, once introduced, plants assimilate into native communities, or whether they aggregate, thus forming mosaics of native- and alien-rich communities. Alien species may aggregate in their non-native range due to shared habitat preferences, such as their tendency to establish in high-biomass, species-poor areas.</p> <p><b>Location</b>: 22 herbaceous grasslands in 14 countries, mainly in the temperate zone.</p> <p><b>Time period</b>: 2012 - 2016.</p> <p><b>Major taxa studied</b>: Plants.</p> <p><b>Methods</b>: We used a globally coordinated survey. Within this survey, we found 46 plant species, predominantly from Eurasia, for which we had co-occurrence data in their native and non-native range. We test for differences in co-occurrence patterns of 46 species, between their native (home) and non-native (away) range. We also tested whether species had similar habitat preferences, by testing for differences in total biomass and species richness of the patches species occupy in their native and non-native range.</p> <p><b>Results</b>: We found the same species to show different patterns of association, depending on whether they were in their native or non-native range. Alien species were negatively associated with native species, and aggregated instead with other alien species in species-poor, high-biomass communities in their non-native, compared to their native range.</p> <p><b>Main conclusions</b>: The strong differences between the native (home) and non-native (away) range in species co-occurrence patterns are evidence that how species associate with resident communities in their non-native range is not species-dependent, but rather a property of being away from their native range. These results thus highlight that species may undergo important ecological changes when introduced away from their native range. Overall, we show origin-dependent associations that result in novel communities in which alien-rich patches exist within a mosaic of native-dominated communities.</p>
